Randomly clicked on your video and really enjoyed it. I wish there were more channels that discuss and appreciate the greatness of 70s-90s Hong Kong Cinema. My earliest memory of HK films is Bridgitte Lin in The Swordsman and Bride with the White Hair and has been my favorite Chinese actress since.
The Chinese in Asia loved Zu much better than Hidden Dragon. Zu is one of the Chinese fairytales. Traditionally the Chinese believe gods and fairies live in heaven and high mountains. (magical realism tales.) Therefore there were many black and white Cantonese movies made in the 50s and 60s in this genre. Those were our superhero movies and very popular, although low-budget and not worthy to be translated into English for the international audience. One of the most noticeable ones is "Buddha's Palm" and Shaw Bros made a color version of it in 1982. Of course, when Zu came out the next year, everyone was so wowed by it. Zu is a true live-action film of what a traditional fairytale should be like in every Chinese's mind. Compared to Hidden Dragon (most of us were scratching our heads as to why it was so revered in the West), Zu's story has much more depth, and Tsui Hark's mind is much more creative and ... (how should I describe it? Odysseous-like? Macho?), and therefore Zu is much more EPIC. In terms of art direction and visually pleasing, Hidden Dragon is great because the filmmaking technology has been much more advanced than that in the 80s. However, Ang Lee is best at directing something softer and should leave wuxia alone😅.
LOL, I agree! Thanks so much for all this information. I hope everyone can read these comments you have written. They add so much to the video. I can't thank you enough.
I agree with you. I don't plan to watch the newer versions of Zu, especially those made for the mainland Chinese audience. They have all the budget they want, but the fact that they make everything so clean, and their make-up and acting are so modern, it looks fake.
Hi! nice analysis. Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain is indeed a great film. I think Tsui Hark's works are visually stunning and in most cases great films overall. However, sometimes they can end up being pretty disorganized. One small correction: The genre is pronounced wuxia like woo-she-ah not like wushu. Thank you!
What a lovely hommage. Good choice of music too.!!
Thank you! Appreciate the watch!
One of the greatest fantasy films ever made

Thank you so much! I too was in love with Bridget Lin. I got to see Bride twice on the big screen and it was an unbelievable experience.

Yes, the craftsmanship of the original is what makes it so special.
I'd believe sterile is the word.
