He actually cut himself while filming this scene... It was an accident but he kept the cameras rolling. Kerry was a real champ for allowing Leo to run his blood on her face
They cut out of and back into frame. When it cuts back it's fake blood. It's a major hazard to smear your blood all over someone. He did cut his hand though.
Nico Reveco That blood is fake, he really did injure himself and continue acting but his hand was taken care of and the blood replaced with fake one before that scene.
Knowing that this is actually real blood makes the concerned faces of everyone and Broomhilda's reaction as he grabs her face much more intense to watch
actually it was just that one take. I think they cleared that up in an interview? But Tarantino loved it so much that they reshot the following scenes with fake blood.
He wasn't in the running, he was a supporting actor in this role, and the award went very deservedly to Christoph Waltz for his role in the same movie.
alejandro estrada- duran They talked about it in an interview. It’s somewhere on RUclips. He did accidentally cut his hand on one of those little glasses and kept acting. They must’ve kept it for later takes and added fake blood after his hand was mended.
It's the fact he tied it into the part, dipstick. He played it off, at first wipes it with a handkerchief that was on set, and he then later smears his very real blood across the face of his co actress to sell the scene. Masterful improv, and he turned what could have been a delayed scene into a perfect work of art.
While he certainly took the lead, every actor in that room maintained character and stuck to the script even though there was a legitimate reason to stop doing so. Like he was hurt really bad there. But they all went with it. Team effort there.
+Lt Col Speirs actually in the Wolf of Wall Street, in the scene that he's trying to get in his Lamborghini totally wasted, he moved his spine and he still continued the scene! Still, no Oscar...
yea and there is gold at the end of a rainbow also get off his dick you , and everyone else in this retarted comment section of Leo's dick lickers. Blood Diamond is the only Oscar worthy film he has ever been in where he should have won 100%.
DiCaprio is great in this scene, but I really love Jackson's mannerisms as well; the way he moves and his facial expressions to seem like a bumbling, subservient fool. Stephen was really committed to his act, and Jackson portrays that beautifully.
Fun fact: Leonardo was having a hard time saying that many n-bombs so off set Samuel l Jackson had encouraged him and told him “this is our every day life”
People keep saying that's real blood. It's true that there was a take where he cut his hand and bled. They decided to incorporate that idea into the movie, but used fake blood in subsequent takes. Believe me, there is no way they'd be allowed to smear real human blood on someone's face for a movie.
They used the take where he cut his hand for real, but this scene wasn’t single take. The blood is real after he slams his hand on the table, but by the time he’s smearing it on Kerry Washington’s face, it’s a new take and that’s fake blood. So it’s real blood for a while, and fake blood for a while
Hate to say it, but yeah, she was the weakest link in the movie. Its jot her fualt though, she was alongside utter GIANTS like Samuel L Jackson, Leo, Jamie Foxx and (im blanking on his name, he was Col Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds).
The fact that he actually split his hand open on glass when smashing his hand down onto the table, and without stopping continued on with the scene using his blood as a prop and improvised it into this exact scene shows why Leonardo is such a professional to work with and why his one of the most talented actors to grace our screens One of the best improvised scenes in movie history in my opinion
That is not true- he did injured his hand and bled, because of that they added into the next scene using PROPS. It's called a movie. The dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were not real either
What makes this movie so great is how the actors managed to play so damn well despite the stigma. They were basically putting themselves on display as not just "fantasy murderers/rapists", but historically relevant evil personalities with which people hold very, very strong opinions. The fact they managed to play it through this flawlessly just speaks of great filmography.
This is one of the most legendary scenes in movie history and film history as well. Leo accidentally cut his hand smashing the glass then played it off like it was nothing then wiped his blood on Kerry Washington. Leo is one of the greatest actors of all time
he cuts his hand on the table- and improvs it perefectly- and ends up integrating it into the scnee- wiping his blood onto her face- THAT is acting- so many actors just read lines and look good. this guy is the most promininet actor of his age for a good reason- he s the de niro of his generation because he can act his arse off.
You're an idiot. The blood was intentional. That wasn't accidental. You think any screen director or actress would allow someone's real blood to be wiped all over their face?
+jhunt123456 They speak about the scene in the extras on the Blu Ray version which says it was in one take and they also showed it from a different angle where the camera is always on Leo. Leo also broke his finger in the scene.
Daniel Red I don't know. I know that some people would be against that, thinking it's too disgusting, others would claim it's badass or something... Maybe the just didn't dare to stop him, mesmerized by this performance...
What makes Leo Dicaprio different from all the rest is that despite his well known movie prescence and worldwide popularity he still manages to do an evil role so well, it makes you enraged at his character, like you want to reach into the screen and kill him with your bare hands. And THAT is why Leo deserves an Oscar. Because if you can play a role like this despite being known worldwide in several different movies, and STILL make people angry and absolutely HATE you on screen, you DESERVE that damn Oscar. Such a shame he keeps getting robbed. But Leo is too good for the Oscars anyway.
+RobotYoshimis agreed. and while daniel day lewis plays a lot of "bad" guys - its so the same, he is a completely different person in every movie, a man you could bet was a different actor from the way he talks, walks, acts and presents himself on the screen

I used to think Leo was overrated but the man can put on quite a performance and proved me wrong. Love this movie from top to bottom and will always enjoy watching every second of it.
Yeah but it ISN'T true that he smeared his real blood on Broomhildas face, after he sliced his hand they used a cut (pun not intended) so they could stop recording and bandage Leo's hand, they then used fake blood instead.
I like how everyone slightly jumped when Candie/Leo smashed his hand on that glass! Improvisation is so awesome in films as in this scene, for instance, Candie slamming the table (and glass) kind of inflicts vulnerability on part of Schultz and Django, and therefore more dominance for Candie and his capable killing instincts as a villain.
Amazing, amazing scene. One of the best in cinema history. All the actors were great but DiCaprio was incredible. As other posts here have commented he really did cut his hand in the scene, that's his real blood. How did he manage to play both Jack in Titanic and this disgusting psychopath...

How is there so much criticism of Leo's role in this comment section? It was amazing, the intensity was brilliant, and he managed to continue after sustaining a wound that required stitches?
There was an interview were Leo said first 2 days of recording he messed up most of the lines, he said he was nervous and way uncomfortable saying some of the lines that they were the most frightening and scary and rude, he said Jamie confronted him, they sat down and had a heart to heart, they re-recorded and Leo never messed up again, his confidence was soaring.
Leo was absolutely scary in this scene. Every scene in this movie was exceptional. Although the actors were simply incredible in their parts, Leo simply made the film.

+boypula meh im at this point where i don't give an F anymore about oscars.... Leo clearly deserves a few but he never got even one... that sht is ridiculous...
+Tom Helms While that is true for a couple of nominations, I do believe he should have gotten an Oscar for The Wolf of Wall Street. For me, he gave the best performance out of that year's nominees. McConaughey was fantastic, but (among other reasons) he was often overshadowed by Leto's more memorable character. And I don't believe Tommy Lee Jones should have won in 1994. I think Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List) was the best, then Leo came second with What's Eating Gilbert Grape. So, yeah. The Academy definitely has had their screw ups in not choosing the best. At least in my opinion. :)
Christoph Waltz is an amazing actor and I don't doubt his abilities at all......but Leonardo DiCaprio should have won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role instead of Waltz. This scene just solidifies how great of actor he is.
Although Leo's hand was bleeding, he kept acting no matter what happens later, so we're in front of one of the best actors ever existed. Frankly he should have won an Oscar for this performance, don't you think?
That's most likely a false story. Actors know exactly what's going to happen unless it's talked about with the director. Real blood on another actor would be exposing them to biohazards that need to me cleaned up. It's workplace safety 101.
He did cut his hand and need stitches, Leo said so himself. Quite easy to cut yourself with glass. After the take with the injured hand they did another take with fake blood to rub on Kerry's face as Leo isn't stupid and knows what a biohazard is most likely.
You know that glass he broke in the beggining of the scene? It was a accident, he really cut his hand, but still remain in his character! Leo is one of the best actors EVER.
Okay, then let me say sky is blue! I said that because I still can't believe how good he is. I don't see any problem in doing that, if it annoys you then just don't waist your time commenting here LulzRoyce

During this scene he accidentally cut his hand when he brought it down on the glass cup and decided on with the show. Now *that's* dedication. You can see DiCaprio checking his hand at 0:26 while swiftly assessing the situation. After a pause of reflection he asks "Where were we?" which fits the context of the scene, but also seems like DiCaprio is literally asking the question, as if he just came back to the scene.
Young Metro when he said bring her out they cut to Jamie Foxx. They cut the scene.

Wollisen Yes, but she didn't break character.
Everyone in that room should be worth of praise for either not breaking character or for not calling the scene off
Nico Reveco That blood is fake, he really did injure himself and continue acting but his hand was taken care of and the blood replaced with fake one before that scene.
Knowing that this is actually real blood makes the concerned faces of everyone and Broomhilda's reaction as he grabs her face much more intense to watch
actually it was just that one take. I think they cleared that up in an interview? But Tarantino loved it so much that they reshot the following scenes with fake blood.
Lol idc how into the scene you are, there is no way someone would stay in character if someone started rubbing real blood in their face.

alejandro estrada- duran They talked about it in an interview. It’s somewhere on RUclips. He did accidentally cut his hand on one of those little glasses and kept acting. They must’ve kept it for later takes and added fake blood after his hand was mended.
The Divine Augustus Yeah Tarantino loved the effect it gave so much that he ran with it.
Imagine how much of a waste that would've been if he did break character and ruined the scene.
"Wow i cant believe he can act and cut his hand at the same time" Said Everyone, Everywhere.

DiCaprio is great in this scene, but I really love Jackson's mannerisms as well; the way he moves and his facial expressions to seem like a bumbling, subservient fool. Stephen was really committed to his act, and Jackson portrays that beautifully.

TRUE WORDS 😁
They used the take where he cut his hand for real, but this scene wasn’t single take.
I like how everyone slightly jumped when Candie/Leo smashed his hand on that glass!
