The Glorious Weirdness of THE RIDDICK TRILOGY

- "Pitch Black", "The Chronicles Of Riddick" and "Riddick" make for an extremely strange trilogy. On the one hand, it's refreshingly ambitious and wholly unique. On the other - it's a lumbering, convoluted chutney of tonal inconsistencies and delusions of grandeur. Still...there's nothing quite like it.

Thank you so much for watching!
This edit was a torturous labour of love (my computer died as I was rendering it, corrupting my drives and meaning I had to remake 85% of it from scratch). Still - I had a blast with these movies and hope you like this episode.

Well done for making an entire video without once mentioning his career defining role-"Orderly" in Awakenings
Second only to his performance as "The Last Witch Hunter" in "The Last Witch Hunter"
@@inframeout a not so guilty pleasure of mine. I still want a TLWH sequel but I recognize I'd be the only one in the theatre lol
@@theobnoxiouslycharming1747 I'm right there with you I loved that movie
I would much rather more of these movies than more Fast n furious. Chronicles is absolutely out of its mind, and I kinda love it
Good synopsis, but I think you missed the Jacks arc. Jack was just some trans masculine kid who got outed. Jack was girl traveling alone who says in the film she dressed like a boy so people would leave her alone. Just a scared kid traveling alone who doesn't want to attract attention. But then she grew up, and learned how to take care of herself, so she doesn't have to hide how she looks anymore. Even in prison, she's not the one afraid anymore.
riddick is the best live action adaptation of warhammer we are going to get (for better or for worse)
Event horizon?
@@GarmrsBarking that's more so a prequel than anything else, this one gets more into the waarhammer feel (specially chronicles)
@@lpj2216 true... But statship troopers is also pretty close... It's basically imperial guard vs tyranids...

Haha great stuff from Vin there
Riddick was (at the time) a murderer, and a legit villain. I never really saw him as outing Jack for going as a male. I thought she did it more out of some kinda safety reason that isn't really explained. The whole outing seemed more because her continuing to do so put everyone in danger. Meaning Riddick didn't care until it became a potential threat to everyone's life. Not say you're wrong about how it was handled. Also not really sure what the point of it was supposed to be. It doesn't add anything except for that scene. If that thread was cut the whole thing would play out the same way pretty much.
Was that Officer Aeryn Sun? I had completely forgotten that she was in "Pitch Black".
I didn't know that today was going to be extraordinary. Neat.
Pitch Black is a great flick.
I'd argue you can pull off an 'invincible' lead character by giving them problems and then coming up with genuinely clever character-based solutions to their problems. I loved how, in Chronicles of Riddick, he's *always* working an angle and *always* getting under his enemies' skin. Showing the process makes it interesting. Then, sadly, "Riddick" itself just makes him a boring superhero.
you forgot to mention Claudia Black... she played a big part in Farscape and later seasons of Stargate SG-1...
and i let it slide whit you saying legos...
I really enjoyed Pitch Black back when it came out. It felt like a glossy version of 80's B grade schlock. Riddick was a reprehensible serial killer, but only a walking murder machine could survive in that place. He was Hannibal Lector by way of a Gym Bro. It all just kinda worked. Chronicles coming out confused me because it didn't seem like Riddick was a character that was really compelling enough to follow. It ended up as a goofy cool looking romp that took itself too seriously. But the character never stopped being reprehensible, so following him as the hero figure really felt wrong. So they had to make the bad guys want to murder "all the things," and look dour as hell while doing so, to make it possible to root for him. I never did see the 3rd one. It looks like that's okay.
Yeah - it's pretty apparent that "Pitch Black" was never meant to kick-start a franchise and everything that came after was crudely bolted onto a character who - in essence - is irredeemably awful

" I am the best at what I do, what I do isn't pretty or nice."
Pitch Black is every "we need to work with villian" plotline but done in isolation. And example Vin Diesel would be incredible in villian role.
This video made me totally want to rewatch Pitch Black. Then it made me think I wanted to rewatch Chronicles of Riddick to make sure I wasn't wrong for feeling like I wanted to defend its merit. Then it made me remember the disappointment of watching Riddick. Now I'm just wondering if the reason you didn't cover the animated movie like thing is that it was also worse than I remember.
There's a sort of "kid playing with action figures" quality to Chronicles of Riddick that I find endearing about it. I came away with the impression that the film was so overblown, convoluted, and bonkers because the filmmakers were so enamored with the bigger budget and resources they had, that they tried to cram as much as they could into the film without much thought to where they were even going with it. That being said, I enjoy the film as a schlocky guilty pleasure simply because it's so bonkers, bizarre, and obtuse that it's entertaining in ways I'm sure weren't intentional. Also just curious, what are your thoughts on the animated short Dark Fury? I personally loved it and think that Chronicles would've been better if it focused more on small scale incidents and encounters like the one featured in that film.
I actually love Dark Fury and the video games ❤️
@@inframeout Ayy good stuff. I haven't played the games myself but I'd absolutely love to at one point. Yeah Dark Fury is up there with Pitch Black as the best of this franchise imo
I always liked these films - Pitch Black especially - but yeah, it's weird what they do with the Dahl character in Riddick. Adolescent as shit
I haven’t seen any of these, but Escape From Butcher Bay was an incredible video game. Also, Christ, that final character arc in the last film is reprehensible 😐
That game needs a HD remake asap
I loved that game on the OG Xbox, such good graphics for it's time.
Your reaction to Riddick insensitively outing Jack during Pitch Black was not imo a hinge point. That plot twist was relevant to the situation and characters.
Chronicles of riddick was fun to watch first. Made me feel like there was a deep world which i could catch up on by watching the first film afterwards. Then after watching pitch black I appreciated it for cheesey ambition.
So much potential for a story like riddick. They ong could've made Riddick a survival film with action scenes. Like a mixture of pitch black and the chronicles of riddick. They couldve even put scares in riddick. Also, they couldve beaten the crap out of riddick in the movie to show hes not invincible because its a little weird how the only time we saw him that beat up it happens off screen
Your commentary has outshined every one of these films.
Shine on!
He's still trying to make at least two more of these insane films, and I'm all for it, just to see if anything crazier might happen; some kind of ghost space war or some shit. I've always held these movies in a special place, much like the Lucas era Star Wars films; they're products of artistic vision that, while very hit or miss, on or off, still allow me to directly engage with the passion of the artists involved; they aren't so by the numbers and over produced as to be sanitized of the very artists who made them, and it's damn near impossible to get movies with big dreams, and a crew who can almost make it work, and a budget that allows for it to happen, even if just barely. Now we nearly never see these aspirational mid budget blockbusters made by basically independent film makers with a wacky vision. Respect where it's due.
I like your videos because you seem to at least have real opinions on things and dont mind making hot takes when you need to. Keep going man
I appreciate that
Lovers of the Necromongers' aesthetics could try the comic book works of French legend Philippine Druillet, part of the similarly legendary crew of the Métal Hurlant magazine epic history!!!
I love the first two of these. Can't say I've seen the 3rd but the first one especially
Oh my god I clapped for joy at the reference to Rabbie Florence's "bummed in the gob" moment 😍
You are the first and only person to get that reference!!!!
I've always loved the Riddick series, whenever I go to a thrift store or a second hand store of any kind I play a game with myself where I try and find one of the movies on DVD, extra points if it's one of the special editions with the metallic raised text for the title
Pitch Black is legit a good quality indie style flick. Part 2 is just a cash grab on the property. 3 is schlock but is fun and entertaining action. Plus, Katee Sackhoff.
Chronicles is too weird, too out there to be merely labelled a cash grab. To me it seems like Diesel had enough juice to make what ever he wanted, for a short period of time, and he bet it all on this Riddick character, blowing it out in to this bizarre gothic space saga. I'm glad he did that!
7:42 Cause he's a G!
This was great - thank you!
"Riddick" indeed, but with the accent on the last syllable.

My old Willy is rendered flapable, but my heart is with Riddick.

It sure is...a thing that happens
Pitch Black was the best. I only watched & rewatched Pitch Black. 🍸
Thanks for this. Have always enjoyed the Riddick movies as the anti-Torreto films. No sentiment, no family, and no stupid stunts. Just Vin growling and killing whatever gets in his way. Especially surprised by "Chronicles" since it's such a batshit story combined with a lot of serious talent in service to a ridiculous story that somehow manages to inflate itself into servicable enjoyment. (Especially liked the comparison to "Jupiter Ascending," which I think was the W's attenpt at their own "Chronicles." In my fantasy movie, we get Eddie Redmane and Vin Diesel doing their characters in the same movie.)
Thanks for the heart. Should mention here (or in your piece) that Diesel and Twoey are in active development on a fourth "Riddick" which I guess will get made in the next couple of years after finishing up the Fast films. Here's hoping he gets around to taking on Karl Urbain and the Necros once and for all. (Speaking of which, I'd be interested in your doing your take on "Dredd." It's another seriously underrated film and supposedly they're still trying to get another one off the ground.
I've been eagerly awaiting anything new in the "Dredd" universe of pushing a decade. I adored that film - and the proposed Amazon show "Mega City One" has been in development hell for years now
Pitch Black was a cult hit in Russia, everyone liked that movie
I absolutely loved Chronicles
chronicles of ridick os genuinely good, the animation after that isn't bad eighter
I love the animated one
@@Catglittercrafts it's pretty good, I like it too
...
Does Vin Diesel like Warhammer 40K?
It certainly has that kind of vibe. I know he's a real big D&D guy.
I don’t care, I love these movies
Wow, I saw the first two but never saw Riddick and now I'm glad I didn't so it didn't retroactively tarnish my feelings for those first two. Because yikes.
I love them all.
The riddick trilogy is one of my favorite movie trilogies
There's nothing quite like it
Thandiwe is pronounced like 'Tandy', I've seen a lot of people trip up over how to say it since she went back to original spelling, but you don't gotta say the 'H' or the 'WE' in it 🤦🏿♀️
While I based my pronunciation on a number of recent interviews - I apologize unequivocally for any mistake on my part
I love Pitch Black one of my fave sci fi horrors but I couldn't get i to the other two too cheesy the second one was too convoluted
WHO HERE IS READY FOR RIDDICK VS. STEVEN SEAGAL?
Folding Ideas has a really good video about the second movie. He calls it great trash
Pitch black was good, but then it went downward.
So much potential wasted on that 3rd movie. They dropped that ball so hard. Why not take the necromongers to fight the monsters from the 1st movie? Or have them capture/tame them and then use them as weapons to get Jacks soul energy whatever back? Explore the Judy Denchementals! That could be a blast! Nope... some weird, quasi-homophobic-rapey bullshit? That's the call I guess.
Honestly - if they'd have kept the film exactly how the first fifteen minutes are (Riddick alone on a planet fighting against the elements, creatures and circumstances in which he's found himself) it'd be a pretty great film....but no...they really needed to remind everyone that he's a creepy sexual predator
i’m curious if they thought he redeemed himself too much in the 2nd flick, thus reinforcing the fact that deep down he is just a cutthroat and creeper. the last movie just reinforced it as we got stripped of power and hit rock bottom
Pitch Black was decent at the time but there's no need for it anymore, there are plenty of other mid tier sci-fi movies/shows now, many of them Much, Much better, i just don't think it deserves to be remembered as 'underrated' or a 'Cult Classic'. Chronicles and Riddick are just too inept to be remembered at all, horrible action, terrible dialogue, bad acting and hideous visuals denude them of any other merit imo. With Chronicles i would much rather watch other sci-fi bombs like the incredibly enjoyable (if too long) John Carter of Mars instead and Riddick is just a grottier, nastier Pitch Black.
That forced outing scene with the trans-masculine character is a huge OOF. Makes me wince.
Not only is it reprehensible...it's unnecessary. Serving absolutely no narrative, thematic or character purpose. It's just a leering, horrid moment of nastiness.
@@inframeout It really sucks that this kind of representation is basically all trans-masculine folks like me get.
Here's hoping major studios get their shit together sooner rather than later
@@inframeout Preach!
I always interpreted that the character was disguised as a male for survival and not identifying as one, but admittedly I haven't seen the movie in quite some time.
what the video fails to mention is that vin diesel is legitimately good in those films and in movies like Find Me Guilty and Multi-Facial. Its a bit shocking to see that the man can actually act somewhat well after seeing him be a hunk of stone in almost all his other movies. Riddick 4 was supposed to come out pre pandemic and it was supposed to be a return to the sci-fi epic tone of the second one, hope it comes out some day so i can fill my brain with more riddick nonsense.
... I repeatedly say how good I think Riddick is in these movies
@@inframeout True but you are talking about how the character helps Diesel where i think that another actor cant pull that character off. Imagine another mid 00s action movie star in that role it simply doesnt work.
I literally describe Vin Diesel as "Menacing", "Charismatic", "Engaging".
I love Pitch Black one of my fave sci fi horrors but I couldn't get i to the other two too cheesy the second one was too convoluted
