  • At this point, calling Artifact a dead game would be disrespectful to dead games.
Defense of the Ancients, Counter-Strike 1.6 and StarCraft: Brood War are "dead" games, and there are still thousands of people around the world who play them every day.
    Artifact is beyond dead.
    But what happened?

A game made to be skill based but without proper ranking system is kinda stupid and it certainly isn't casual. If were basing this question off how Valve monetization systems worked in previous titles (buying keys to unlock crates/chest) I'd say probably not. Though instead of crates, if it were multiple cosmetics that you can earn in a progressively upgrading Battle Pass, that would be different. Fortnite/Dota 2 showed the success of battle passes and how they can be easy moneymaker through just selling cosmetics. The main problem is that they marketed it as a more serious competitive game as opposed to very casual games (Hearthstone).
Problem is, the game is objectively too much of an RNG fest. Understandably card draw, that is fine, but the fact that creeps spawn randomly (made worse by the fact that some cards rely heavily on creeps) and some heroes have coin flip mechanics (bounty hunter has 50% chance of being either useless or strong and tidehunter... well, I've seen tidehunter stun more than 17 units) made the RNG fest too bad.
On top of that the game is E X P E N S I V E as fuck. You need to buy the game, need to buy cards and if it had lived longer you had to keep pouring in money to stay with the meta. But because the player pool was doomed to be small the competitive scene was doomed as well.
I honestly tried to play this game seriously and was very good, for as far as that is possible with the RNG, but this game was simply doomed by greed...

A few other things: the big 1 million tournament was for me and i'm sure many others, a proper look at the game. I was excited to finally see some mechanics and how the game works, yet they NEVER tried to explain it even once. They just talked about complicated plays that the whole twitch chat would just spam 'how does this game work' or 'i am a doggie'. Making it closed beta so that no players can get any real hype, then not telling them anything about the game, hiding the economy until the last minute, it's hard to see how they weren't expecting a massive failure.

In the age of streaming, Valve released the least-watchable digital card game of all time, and I include the extremely-dated MTGO in that. Spreading the action over 3 screens is honestly one of the most baffling design decisions I've ever seen. Compared to the streamlined, clear and stylish Hearthstone, Artifact is inscrutable and clunky.
In the age of free to play, Valve released a game that not only charged you to buy it in the first place but also for every single card and pack you'd ever open. All these Hearthstone players who need to be enticed to leave their collections behind, and Valve decided to charge them to even try it out. All these Hearthstone players who're hooked on daily quests and rewards, and Valve decided to have absolutely no progression or rewards system.
In the age of constant updates, and meltdowns from the community if balance changes aren't made, Valve released a digital card game pretending to be a paper card game - no balance changes ever. And to make matters worse, they then reneged on that promise not to mess with people's cards when it became clear that no-balance-updates wasn't a viable strategy. Valve somehow managed to get the worst of both worlds.

Biggest reason it failed was the $20 admission fee when There were plenty of other free digital card games already in the market. Second, the microtransaction heavy nature of the game didn't do it any favors. People don't want to feel they have to put down even more money just to stay competitive. It was highly noticeable Valve was much too greedy with this product.
