Is reasonable to file the sides sharper when it is flat (2:24), when you save some energy afterwards (6:06), or would they deform badly? And if you have to temper it, where you would start heating it in forge?
Thanks, great video, this one looks pretty similar to the mästermyr spoon augers I want to reforge, I think that video will help me out a lot, since the vikings didn't have dremels :D
Yes it is heat treated to a full blue like the other wood drill bits I made. That makes them tough enough to hold an edge for a while but easy to sharpen with a file.
Hi, I have some smaller spoon bits that are like you describe the worn out ones, just like a narrow gouge. There isnt much info I can find on sharpening them. What was the article you referred to?
@@df-intheshop330 Понял, спасибо. Не подумал об этом сразу. Но ведь можно закалить после черновой заточки? Или сверло такого типа нормально работает и в сыром виде?
That is right. These tools were once only used on freshly cut wood so there was no need for a hard cutting edge. When you harden a tool you must make a decision between how hard the cutting edge will be and what tools you will need to sharpen that tool.
Thank you, another great tool
Love that you don't just make up stuff. You Sir do know a lots of stuff.Glad to learn from you.
Thanks
I only just found this video! I love the things you make, Dennis. Thank you.
Very cool!
I just heard of spoon bits for the first time reading The Art of Blacksmithing, and had to figure out what they were and how to make them!
As a new subscriber, I must say that you put out some really great instructional videos!
Another great idea. Thank you Denis

That looks like something I could make from one of those auto spring bits I find all over town. Did you heat treat it at all?
Yes it is heat treated to a full blue like the other wood drill bits I made. That makes them tough enough to hold an edge for a while but easy to sharpen with a file.
That makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

The article is in the Fine Woodworking book on Hand Tools (1986?). I have all the information at the beginning of the video.
Thanks, my bad - I skipped a bit to get to the sharpening part! I have a couple of books from that series, and I think that one is on my list to get.
Can you show how forge a wood gouge? Thanks. Luiz (Brazil).
Спасибо! отличный инструмент. Но почему вы его не закаливали?
I did not harden this drill because I use a hand scraping tool sharpen it.
