I haven’t experimented with it yet, but an Idea I had was have a tube coming out of there nest that leaders to nowhere. Both ends are blocked with cotton one side with slightly less. Inside the tube, I would have some sugar and protein. Once they chew through the small bit of cotton they would get access to the food. Again I haven’t yet tried this so it might not work but In theory you could set it up so that they would just get autofed for like up-to a month. Let me know if anyone tries this. Maybe someone could invent a door for tubing that automatically opens after a certain amount of time. This would be very helpful.

What ants do you have since some species like Campo, pheidole, carebara and myrmecocystus use their workers or majors to store up food and then use it when food can't be found and if you have harvesters or pheidole or carebara they store up seeds to eat them from what I know

i tend to go away for a month each year, and have sort of gotten it down. The absolute most necessary thing is water. Water needs to be there all the time so I will give each colony a test tube of water. For protein I just do big feeds and for sugars I use a tower filled with some ant snaps as I have found that it doesn't mold, instead just turns into a syrup so while harder to eat it is still good for the ants.
