Hey Clay, love your videos as always. Thanks for the info, I don't know much about broadhead sharpening, but at 7:50 you mentioned the car window trick, well you can also use the bottom edge of ceramic coffee mugs for a quick touch up too :)
When Clay Hayes was born, he cut his own umbilical cord, then slapped the doctor because the doctor was not crying. The doc turned to the mother and said congratulations mam, you have given birth to a perfectly healthy man.
Thanks for the tip. We cant bow hunt here in Austria, but I started with archery because of you. At least we can practice on some foam animals like you have at home. :)
Clay, great video as usual. One question I have is how do you address the "chisel tip" for lack of a better word, where the very tip of the broadhead does not follow the same curvature as the rest of the blade, and it isn't necessarily getting sharpened when you have the broadhead laying flat on your stone / file?
@@clayhayeshunter thanks ! Ive been binge watching your channel . great content. switched from compound to recurve . I've got a lot to learn in a short time . season starts October 1, lol
Nice tip about using a Sharpie to mark the broadhead before sharpening! Are you going to do a review for Alone Frozen? It would be great to get your perspective. Cheers from Alaska
Very informative Clay, thanks for sharing. Question: Why are the Zwickey broadheads so darn tricky to sharpen? Is it the steel they use or what? I like them because they are relatively cheap & rugged, but incredibly difficult to get razor sharp. Cheers!
@@clayhayeshunter: please explain. I don't know what a tanto tip is. It just didn't look sharp to me. Is a tattoo tip intentional. Don't mean to sound stupid. I just don't understand. Thanks.
@@dougruebsamen3970 a tanto tip is where the angle of the blade changes right at the transition from the belly to the tip in an abrupt manor( think samurai sword vs chef knife). The steeper angle of the tip adds a lot of strength to the point and the fact that the single bevel extends all the way to the point on each side helps initiate the twist of the broad head once it hits the animal. The point is sharp because the cutting edge extends all the way to the point which helps the broadhead start cutting immediately.
Do you think they might do a ‘best of the best’ survival show with just the winners of each season? They might change up the rules, location, limit items, etc.
Either works! Ive had success with both. But i personally like to file away from the edge with files cause i find it easier for me. But truly wither way will work.
@@michiganmoto7687 love stropping. It's definitely a game changer and takes the edge to a whole new level. I made myself one with an old belt and bought some green stropping compound on Amazon. Good stuff.
What did you use in your workbench vise to help keep that all important bevel? You ever hear of using rubber bands to check sharpness, instead of arm hair ?

@@claybowman1242 that's probably why they're not getting sharp because you're being too aggressive. It doesn't take much to sharpen properly. If you're being too agressive, you're most likely just rolling over your edge. To get a razor edge, it doesn't require much pressure at all.
@@cosmicbilly I'm mostly joking but that is good advice, I'm new to sharpening in general so it can be rather difficult. It'll take a bit more time and practice to get it just right.

The sharpie & window edge tip are slick! Thanks for sharing. Good luck on your upcoming hunt!

window tip was awesome, thanks!
Sharpie trick a great idea.
Glad you liked it!

Getting ready to go I see! Hope you and the family have a great trip.
Looking forward to the recap

Good timing. Thanks for the tips. That belt is a pretty sweet idea.
You bet
great explanation
I love this channel
What is that clamp you’re using in that vise?
What clamp are you using to hold the broadhead in the vise?
Clay, Where did you get the clamp that holds the broadhead in the vice? Thanks Paul
Keren sahabat ku,semoga sukses selalu..👍👍👍👍
I would think that Fallkniven dc3 or dc4 would be great for broad heads and a small strip of leather .
Thanks brother 👍
We can hunt forest here in Papua 🇮🇩

good point, I forgot to address that in this vid. I usually just match the bevel on the point and sharpen in the same way.
What kind of vise is holding you broadhead? It looks handy for this.
curious , doesnt filing the edges change the weight? how many times can you sharpen a head before it really effects arrow characteristics?
You’d have to do a lot of filling to change the weight enough to change flight.

Really like the belt for field sharpening. Can it be bought commercially?

Not this go round. I'll be busy hunting.
I just finished season 8 of alone you were my 2nd favorite person you and biko you caught all that food but b ill was surviving on his wieght
Oh Thank God There Is One Person With A Brain Left In The World !!! Thanks .
Truck window caught me by surprise!
The rig he is using looks like 1/3rd or a Lansky Knife Sharpening system. Good to know I have all I need even by accident lol.
How did you figure out the window trick?
My older brother showed me that many years back

I'm not sure. It's been decades since I've tried to sharpen one.
2 blade or 3 blade?
Broad head sharpening is how I got into your channel. I think it was 2018 season
Does that put a sharp tip on the broadhead. The tip on yours looked pretty dull or rounded.
It's called a tanto tip
@@clayhayeshunter: please explain. I don't know what a tanto tip is. It just didn't look sharp to me. Is a tattoo tip intentional. Don't mean to sound stupid. I just don't understand. Thanks.
Tanto not tatoo...spell check

I been a slaughterman for 16y in Australia,. Made a arrow knife, screw it in and stone it like a knife, strop or steel🤷, cut like a knife.
Toward edge with file, away from edge with stone...or...?
I don't think it matters much. Just personal preference.
Either works!

Just always go away from edge with strop. Otherwise you’ll cut into it and ruin it.

Another tip on removing the burr is to lightly drag the edge on some very soft wood.

Edge of a sheet of paper seems to work best imo since you can feel the drag of the blade on the paper.

Kind of like sharpening a chain saw.
I wonder how many people will brake their tempered window with their Brodhead.
That'd take some pretty aggressive strokes!
