  • In this Reimagining Karatur episode, I'm covering Wa, the other half of D&D's Japan. This time, I will be drawing inspiration from pre-classical Japan and Japanese folklore.

I am trying out the premiere function. Can I know if you'd like me to launch videos with the premiere function so that we can do live chat when the video is playing? Is a day's notice enough time for you all?

Fine by me, any video made by you is as good as a golden award to my heart and my game sessions...

Live chats aren't my thing but I'll definitely watch and maybe comment once it's up and over :)
Those who take part live should enjoy it 👍👍

I do enjoy the idea of not picking my own backstory, but instead discovering it.

This is all way too convinient, I'm actually playing a character from Kara-Tur in a Princes of the Apocalypse game. He's a Oath of vengence paladin with various feats that give him Unarmed strikes.
The problem is that I didn't have enough information on Kara-Tur to fully develop his backstory within the setting due to the lack of updated information, so now I finally have somthing to work with. Thank You.

The story of Urashima Taro is very similar to the Irish story of Oisín and Tír na nÓg. In the Irish legend he went away and spent three years in the fairy kingdom, but when he returned 300 years had passed. He was given a horse to ride by the fairies, but was told he could not set foot on the land. When he did touch the ground he was instantly transformed into a withered old man.

Very cool idea! Would make an excellent 1 shot or Campaign starter for a group that has played together for a long time. As you said... it requires a measure of trust between players and referee.

Interesting, but I feel there's just not much there about the setting itself, or how it might possibly be part of the rest of Kara-Tur, which might be the point. It seems to be a fairly self-contained setting and need a lot of work by a DM, but it could be a new experience.

I heard about Chinese martial artists called Wuxia with power to hover and pressure points techniques that would help kara_tur great again.

I would like to see a deep dive into dragons. The Chinese dragon myth seems so strong yet so different from the Western idea of dragons. I'd like to hear your take of how we could incorporate more of that myth and history into modern D&D - both in this reimagined setting or more popular settings. It'd be great to involve more of Chinese and Japanese myth into games without it feeling like appropriation.

DnD is already an aproppiation of Alglosaxon , Balkan and Middle East myths............if you dont have a problem with that , you are ok to go
Most myths dont belong to any one culture (dragons ? giants ? sirens/tritons? , etc... ) and most are copied/taken from others cultures already
Most east asia have the same basic mythologies with only local variants , all thanks to china and mongol empires (much like rome , gauls in europe and Aztecs , Mayans , toltecs in america)
Not offence really but as long as you dont fall into overly racist tropes somehow (mongols do were savage conquerors more often than not) it is ok to integrate anything into your dnd campaing (lots of homebrew stat blocks for oriental creatures in dnd tumblrs) , "culturally apropiation" of myths for personal use and recreation are benign at worst

Nice weaboo video, I love the idea of the background as someting that the player not know, I was tinking, well you give to him only the proficiente points of your not of any background, next when they make an ability check the dungeon master said "well, you don´t know why, but you are very good with the animals, you know everyting about take care of sheeps, thats why you remember your proficiency with animals"

I personally really don't like the Oni. Not because of it itself, but because of the name. Oni are some of my favorite Japanese Yokai, but here it's just a Magic Ogre. I personally just call it the ogre mage and make the Oni a separate creature to use in this sort of setting. I actually talked with someone and decided to essentially make it what the Tanarruk was for Orcs but for Trolls. I know that most of the time, Oni are referred to as Japanese Ogres, but they fit a Demon blooded Troll more in terms of abilities and social structure. One legend has an Oni surviving being decapitated and continuing to fight. Just like a Troll's Variant Loathesome Limbs Variant Trait.
Most Oni, even when not doing that, are usually portrayed as being incredibly hard to kill and having fire abilities. Because of this, I usually alter the Oni's regeneration to make it weaker but to not have the damage type weaknesses. It'd probably just cease working for a couple rounds if they take a critical hit or it stops wholesale if they are under a 1/4th of their hit points. That's at least for Monstrous Oni, I also portray some Tieflings like more human sized Oni in more Japanese settings. Oni might be a catch all term for demon blooded creatures in this case. I just really like Oni and want to include them as much as I can.

I play Onis as High Lvl Demon types (chaotic rather than lawful) but i always equate tieflings with Onis since i saw them due to skin colors tho
I usually play them as elemental based warriors (fire , cold , lightning , etc....) with high CON , STR and CHA (tenacity) but low WIS (prone to rage) and DEX (due to size) with immunity to their element and life leach abilities.........some particulary powerfull ones transform into masks after they die , which are cursed (duh) and are semi sentient (like the one ring from LOTR) and sealing them becomes a quest on itself

@@ramondelgado4927 that is definitely an interesting way to do it though I'd rather the Masks be a way to seal up a restless Ghost of a Slain Oni. Like normal means of dealing with them aren't viable so sealing t gem in masks is the alternative

The adventurous archaeology campaign is a good way to connect Wa's past to the PCs' personal stories, but I'd also like to see your take on Wa's present, and how you'd reimagine it. :)

I would probably play Wu like the remnants of a ancient civilization shrouded in mystery and ruins populated by monsters and sparse villages so the players can be treasure hunters or as you suggest survivors of the ancient civilization trying to find their place in a new world.
