Great choice Greybeard, especially ensuring it was the album track that Nick and Alexia heard. Manfred Mann was born in South Africa and studied music and played jazz in Johannesburg, but left for London in 1961 as he was sick of the apartheid policy of the government. He formed a blues band which, after a few chart hits became more pop oriented and one of the most successful Top 20 bands in the UK. He was particularly skilled in re-arranging other writer's songs into pop hits such as Bob Dylan's 'The Mighty Quinn'. The band split late in the 60's and after an unsuccessful couple of jazzier albums as Chapter Three he formed Manfred Mann's Earth Band which had a more progressive style, and all their albums are underrated and well worth a listen. His knack for interpreting other people's songs remained however, and the band had huge success with Springsteen songs such as this one (which I'm sure went to #1 in the US) plus 'For You' and 'Spirit In The Night'. You probably heard this on the radio guys, it was a big hit everywhere.

Before Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Manfred Mann had several hit singles in the mid sixties. You may have heard the song Do Wah Diddy Diddy that starts with the lyrics "There she was just a walkin' down the street singin' Do Wah Diddy Diddy Dum Diddy Do! I always thought of it as one of the early iconic rock and roll songs! Anything off their Solar Fire album is great!
This whole album is a classic, but this song was huge. I remember being in high school and it was on the radio all the time. And, for me, it never got annoying as some hits do. This is not the only Springsteen song they covered either. The album Chance had another Springsteen cover.
From the early 1960s until 1969 the Manfred Mann group were a pop group who had many top twenty hit singles, before morphing into the Manfred Mann Earth Band. Cream’s bass player Jack Bruce was even in the band for a short while when they had the hit single ‘Pretty Flamingo’. They had a hit with Bob Dylan’s ‘Mighty Quinn’. They were a well known band with many hits.

Yes, however, this band purposely changed deuce to douche as a tongue in cheek joke; this is why he pronounces it "douche". That is the lyric--no longer the 32 Ford Coupe. No, it is not Supertramp, it's Manfred Mann (over 80 years old and still playing live) on keys and Chris Thompson (for me one of the best singers) on vocals. What an amazing song!
This was the second of three Springsteen songs they covered. The first was Spirits in the Night, and the lthird was For You. All three songs were on Springsteen's debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park.
Manfred Mann was one of the first users both of the mellotron in the late 60's and the Mini Moog in the very early70's. I saw the Earth Band on a couple of ocassions in the later 70's having got all the albums. Also remember well from my childhood his self titled (pop) band back in the 60's with Paul Jones or latterly Mike d'Abo on vocals: songs such as "Do Waa Diddy Diddy", "Pretty Flamingo", "Semi-Detached, Suburban Mr. James", "Ha! Ha! Said The Clown", "Mighty Quinn", "My Name Is Jack" and others. From this early list alone, and of course the song you were listening to, they are a lot of covers but not in the traditional way as they are completely different sound. Love Manfred Mann's music from the very early days all the way through Earth Band and beyond.
Just love the covers that Manfred Mann made of songs written by Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen. Considering this is early seventies, the engineering and production make the sound of the instruments very clear and bright.
Such a cool song, takes you on a journey and always loved the ending. Thanks Greybeard for this request and thanks Nick and Lex for your reaction (always great to see you Lex!)🧡

They had a very special sound. My favourites are «Father of Day, Father of Night» and «Mighty Quinn» and «Davy’s on the Road Again».
El grupo nativo americano es REDBONE que en los años 70 tuvo bastante éxito en Europa con canciones como" The Witch Queen Of New Orleans" o "We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee" que se refería a la masacre que ocurrió en 1890 en la reserva india de Lakota Pine Ridge por el séptimo de caballería
That magnificent guitar solo belongs to Dave Flett, he performs another tremendous one in a song called "California" in their next album called "Watch" from 1978.
That short version must of been for AM radio & a 45 rpm vinyl. Because I've been hearing this song on the radio since it came out & I have never ever heard the shorter version. Blinded By The Light is a Bruce Springsteen cover. They also had a hit with another Bruce cover, Spirits In The Night with I actually like even more. They also did his song For You. They also had a hit with Bob Dylan's Mighty Quinn & the Police's Demolition Man.
WHat a fun song. Summer of 76 and I'm at the local skating rink with my cousin playing pinball and that song playing in the backgound coming out of these huge speakers suspended form the rafters and we both were feeling no pain, and that bass! Remember it like it was yesterday!
Classic FM radio song back when I was in high school cruising in my wannabe 67 Chevelle Deuce coop. The other band you’re contemplating is Redbone. You should do that reaction. Perfect reaction and request on a late summer Saturday afternoon. ❤️🎼🏎️
Never was a fan of Springsteen but I was a fan of Manfred Mann since his hit "Doo Wa Diddy" much earlier so my introduction to this was from MM EARTH BAND and Mann! They made it their own here! Try Solar Fire for even more Proggy vibe.
Holy hell man, it's 'deuce', the car. This is Springsteen. He loved writing using the image of cars in his early-mid career. No one revs up a cigarette.
You are correct. It's well known (DJs talked about the change all the time back then) that they changed Bruce's word "deuce" to "douche" as a tongue in cheek joke. Bruce was fine with the change, thought it was kind of funny as they took his song all the way up the charts to #1, an achievement he couldn't do with his version. Well done Manfred Mann!
Try to listen some later albums from Manfred Mann's earth band, from this," Roaring silence" to "Watch" , and particularly "Angel Station" and also "Chance" from 1976 to 1980 they are in full all great. You'll have one of the best keyboard play and minimoog solos if you like, but even then the band was playing very well in these years, and Chris Thompson have also a convincing voice. Harmonious and melodic with some Prog moods.
i recommend the live version of ''Come and get your love'' - Redbone on The Midnight Special they do an authentic Native American dance intro ... and a great passionate version of the song ...IMO
Deuce coupe was a car that was often hot rodded, as in revved up like a deuce. Blinded by the light was written by Bruce Springsteen, I've seen a video of him playing this, not sure where or when. It's a case of the cover being more successful or recognised that the original.
Hi guys, did you catch chop sticks after the break? Perfect segue into the next lick. Manfred is 83 and still pushing it. Hallelujah!! I want to dance....where's my walker
What always amazed me about this track and Spirit in the night and the whole album Solar Fire were recorded by the same man who brought us,Do Wah Diddy Diddy back in 1964, what a progression.
My take on the 'deuce' thing was that, when someone asked Bruce about it, he said that some shady characters would wad up $200 bucks, a big sum back then, for nefarious deals. So, 'wrapped up like a deuce' was a like a bundle of cash, well hidden and tucked away. I could be completely wrong, though. Just something I thought I heard long ago.
MMEB did so many great songs throughout the 70s; 'California' is a favourite of mine. PS The "pitta patta" song is 'Storm in a Teacup' by The Fortunes!
Hi Guys, a wonderful album and track thats longer than the single edit. When I was younger I was suprised by such a difference having spent my early teenage years buying mostly singles. I couldn't afford albums and had to rely on birthdays & Christmas to get them. There are too many album tracks to mention when the guitar or keyboard solos are always cut out on the single edits > "Abracadabra" by Steve Miller ... "Gypsy" by Uriah Heep, " Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult....I remember buying the single "Freebird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd and surprised it was the full album version .... about 10 years later I saw the same single re-released and had a look ... It was only about 4 minutes long. I went to the counter and complained and was told ..."Oh you want the 12inch version" ...at 3 times the price !!! 12inch records didn't exist before, so now the cheeky record companies were cashing in. The worst was "Inside" by Stiltskin. Everyone bought it because of the advert "Creek, Levi's 501 jeans" Inside by Stiltskin. It has a corker of an intro and was brilliant on the ad which is on u.t still. .... Can you believe they cut out that intro ? !!! Knowing thats what everyone wanted.....I took my single back but they refused to take it as it had been played....."If you want the intro, you need to get the 12 inch version " ! I caved in ..I really wanted it ! Watch the ad and you will understand why. When Bohemian Rhapsody came out Freddy Mercury refused to have it cut....All or nothing !!! You didn't mess with Freddy ! Manfred Man were around in the 60's with numerous hits, then very cleverly re-invented themselves forming Earthband and their albums are out of this world. This was great thankyou ! Jim X
Hi Jim, how are you ? have you survived the crazy weather changes ? Record companies and releases is an endless subject ... but I think nowadays with all the possible sources of informations this shouldn't happen no more. Another strange release policy was, when there was some kind of Best of, but actually the biggest hit of the band was missing. Another kind of release policy that I hate, is, what Tool did with their latest album : 1 CD plus all kinds of stuff, that I'm not interested in, and then they ask 83 Euros - ridiculous 😡 and still up to today there is no "normal" version 40 euros for 1 CD ? KEEP YOUR SHIT ..... sorry ... I always get angry about that. Other than that did you see my "Finnish mixtape" 4 weeks ago ? and in the meantime some Kraan .... and I'm still working on my Blind Ego mixtape. What's your newest discovery/purchase ? Have you seen the latest Opeth/Jinjer/Arch Enemy/Leprous/Lovebites ... pretty good month for new releases. Have a nice weekend ... I'm looking forward to hear from you ... rocking greetings Rudi 🤘 PS: Jim just made his own mixtape of youth memories of The Friday Rock Show

Well, all of those bands you mention were huge in 1976! I'm so surprised you haven't reacted this yet.......I just assumed it was years ago! I think I heard their cover of Springsteen's 'Spirits in the Night' first......and it's also EPIC. These lyrics though......show an ambition and sensitivity that Bruce would go on to master with Born to Run......this era was a bit of a Dylan influenced overreach......that I enjoy, but his first album is DENSE on every level.
The entire The Roaring Silence album is excellent. The track Starbird is my favourite - the middle of which is a spectacular call and response solo battle between synth and guitar... in 5/4 time.
I had heard the reason it was sung Douche in the song but forgot, so I looked it up. SEE BELOW for the answer.............. *The Truth Behind ‘Blinded By The Light’s” Famously Misheard Lyric* It turns out the famously misunderstood lyric in the Manfred Mann’s Earth Band cover of “Blinded by the Light” isn’t misunderstood at all. The track, which was written by Bruce Springsteen for his 1973 debut, featured a reference to Springsteen’s love for big, fast cars - specifically the 1932 V8-powered Ford that’s known as the “deuce coupe.” He sings, “Cut loose like a deuce.” When Manfred Mann’s Earth Band recorded their cover of the song three years later, they thought rhyming “loose” with “deuce” was too corny; so they changed it to “revved up like a deuce,” Mann explains. What was the Boss saying? However, when singer Chris Thompson recorded his vocal tracks, he ended up changing the line even more, singing, “wrapped up like a douche.” He now admits, “It wasn’t written like that, and I screwed it up completely. It sounded like ‘douche’ instead of ‘deuce,’ and because of the technical process, it meant we couldn’t remix it.” The song ended up hitting number one in February 1977 - a feat Mann now attributes to the confusing lyric.
I bought the album because I liked this cover, even though I first heard Bruce's version. (I have that album also.) This is different enough that it almost becomes a different song, but it still belongs to The Boss. There is a track on this album titled 'Waiter, There's a Yawn in My Ear'. Cover related? 🤷♂ ☮🤎🎶
This is the incredible MMEB version of a Bruce Springsteen song. Masterpiece. From the same album, treat yourself and listen to the instrumental composition "Waiter, There is A Yawn In My Ear". A jewel for the ear... and for those who want to do an audio test of their stereo! Thank you. [NB: Back when I was in a prog rock cover band, we used this composition to test the sound system.]
"You can't put a solo like that on the radio." Actually you can and they did. The ancient and arcane days of AOR: Album Oriented Rock in the 1970s and '80s. The glory that was, and in some places still is, FM radio. Old Far..., ehr, Dude [keep it family friendly] remembers and rejoices to have been alive and listening in those halcyon days. Continue on your journey of rediscovery, NicknLex. -- ✌👤
"Revved up like a Deuce, another runner in the night." A Deuce is a 1932 Model A Ford, a popular base for hot rods with souped up/demon tweaked engines. Think "Little Deuce Coupe" by the Beach Boys. Just some poor diction. Or was it? Heh-heh-heh [I laugh my evil laugh.].
There are only 2 songs on my "Favorite Songs of All Time" list that are NOT done by one of my favorite bands. "Freebird" by Lynard Skynard, and this version of this song.
Greybeard! Manfred Mann liked Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen songs! I had this album in 1976 as an 18 yr old but have loved this keyboard band since 1964
This song in particular reminds me a lot of another band that we haven't reacted to yet...Steve Miller Band! I actually think it would be a mix of Billy Joel and Steve Miller!!!
@JKonstage one of my favourites since the early 70s, Steve and Bozs finest work, possibly, maybe? But definitely one of the finest late 60s lps, in my personal opinion!!...
Only top 10 Billboard hit with "Chopsticks" in "the middle eight". It's possible, even likely, that you heard this from several sources. It was an FM radio staple back in the day. As has been mentioned, this was a Springsteen penned tune. Manfred Mann's Earth Band also covered another Springsteen song called "Spirits In the Night". I think the covers are better than the original versions but that's just a personal opinion.
No this song is played in its entirety to this day. No one cutting this song off. Nice reaction.
And just as a reminder, AM radio played the shorter versions but FM radio stations almost always played the album cuts so we did get to hear the whole thing if you were into FM stereo.
He’s a talented South African, one of our best. Mutt lange and Trevor rabin also South Africans..
“Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another roamer in the night…”
Just love the covers that Manfred Mann made of songs written by Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen. Considering this is early seventies, the engineering and production make the sound of the instruments very clear and bright.
Amazing cover this song, brilliantly performed both on record and live, I purchased the 7 inch single for this track as a youth back in the 1970s..
I remember buying the single Eric ! Love it so much Eric thank you! Nick and Lex thanks as always our friends ❤
El grupo nativo americano es REDBONE que en los años 70 tuvo bastante éxito en Europa con canciones como" The Witch Queen Of New Orleans" o "We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee" que se refería a la masacre que ocurrió en 1890 en la reserva india de Lakota Pine Ridge por el séptimo de caballería
Thanks for coving this band, the road to Babylon is another great track from the album as with Questions and waiter there is a yawn in my ear.
Wow, that's one of the very same memories I have.
@@firstnamelastname8060 From south Ga per chance?
Another great song by them is "Don't kill it Carol"....they have a live performance on u tuub...and it's AMAZING....
The albums watch and angel station
Manfred Mann, "Do Wah Diddy Diddy". They also covered Springsteen's "For You", also covered by Greg Kihn Band.
Different bands, same guy. Manfred Mann broke up in 1969.
Classic FM radio song back when I was in high school cruising in my wannabe 67 Chevelle Deuce coop. The other band you’re contemplating is Redbone. You should do that reaction. Perfect reaction and request on a late summer Saturday afternoon. ❤️🎼🏎️
Yes Scott!
Saw them live, early seventies. They opened for Uriah Heap great show.
Another classic track thanks guys
Never was a fan of Springsteen but I was a fan of Manfred Mann since his hit "Doo Wa Diddy" much earlier so my introduction to this was from MM EARTH BAND and Mann! They made it their own here! Try Solar Fire for even more Proggy vibe.
been listening to this for years and never noticed the Supertramp thing before
Great reaction as always guys... Trying to figure out the lyrics to songs back in the day was fun but this was next level....😊
"All by myself" by Eric Carmen had beautiful piano section in the middle that they cut out to make the radio. You should react to that.
He's actually saying " Duce". Which, was slang at the time, for a left-handed cigarette.
Holy hell man, it's 'deuce', the car. This is Springsteen. He loved writing using the image of cars in his early-mid career. No one revs up a cigarette.
@@kevinlakeman5043 👍😂🤣🚬
You are correct. It's well known (DJs talked about the change all the time back then) that they changed Bruce's word "deuce" to "douche" as a tongue in cheek joke. Bruce was fine with the change, thought it was kind of funny as they took his song all the way up the charts to #1, an achievement he couldn't do with his version. Well done Manfred Mann!
They also covered Dylan's the Mighty Quinn.
i love watching you two
Check out their live version on the Midnight Special-very entertaining.
Hugely popular, in Ontario, Canada, I'm sure they played the long version. A big part of my teen years this song. Such great music.
I actually remember hearing the uncut version of this on the radio when I was a kid. Dunno if the long version played every time though.
In the Seattle area, the long (album) version played on the FM stations, and the short (45) version on the AM stations.
i recommend the live version of ''Come and get your love'' - Redbone on The Midnight Special they do an authentic Native American dance intro ... and a great passionate version of the song ...IMO
Great song but you need to do some stuff off the "The Good Earth" album by MMEB.....prog/moog heaven.
I'm looking forward to hear from you ... rocking greetings Rudi 🤘
PS: Jim just made his own mixtape of youth memories of The Friday Rock Show

Greybeard has great taste.
All his recommendations are 5star for me too.
Now,I dare you,I have asked ALL the other reactors but no one will touch it for some reason.
Star Star by the mighty Rolling Stones, all about a high class hooker/groupie.
My favourite Stones banger among many favourites.
If you want to hear something wildly different, check out Springsteen’s version on the live in Dublin sessions,
Well, all of those bands you mention were huge in 1976!
There's a great live version of Come and Get Your Love on The Midnight Special! Great comments about this song are already in here.
One of my favourite bands there is so much more, enjoy!
Good one, Graybeard! Come a long way since “Do Wah Diddy Diddy Dum Diddy Dee!”
Hello Nick Lex, listen to the songs "Angel at My Gate" & "You Are - I Am". They are on the band's LP Angel Station.😉
“Blinded by the light, revved up like a douche, another roller in the night.” 🤣
One of the top songs for misheard lyrics.
If you saw the film "Blow" (2001), it was used to great effect during a photograph montage.
I had this album in 1976 as an 18 yr old but have loved this keyboard band since 1964
Manfred mann, one of our South African stars!
you need to listen to the entire album...There are some GREAT tracks on this recording.
This song in particular reminds me a lot of another band that we haven't reacted to yet...Steve Miller Band! I actually think it would be a mix of Billy Joel and Steve Miller!!!
Steve’s Living in the USA can be found on the recent July 4 Marathon. Check it out!
@JKonstage one of my favourites since the early 70s, Steve and Bozs finest work, possibly, maybe?
But definitely one of the finest late 60s lps, in my personal opinion!!...
(To all Swedish Nick and Lex fans) Manfred Mann currently resides in Sweden with his wife. 😊
And he’s a South African
Only top 10 Billboard hit with "Chopsticks" in "the middle eight".
It's possible, even likely, that you heard this from several sources. It was an FM radio staple back in the day.
As has been mentioned, this was a Springsteen penned tune. Manfred Mann's Earth Band also covered another Springsteen song called "Spirits In the Night". I think the covers are better than the original versions but that's just a personal opinion.
Everyone is better than Springsteen
You should react to their song Angels At My Gate. Lexi would love that one.
It's Deuce - a '40s era two door car favoured by hot-rodders.
