Your explanation of the sound production made me curious and look for a definition and clarification of a "reverb". Lol Because whenever I've heard this song I've always had that strange feeling as something is off or just different with it but couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was.
It was really educational and smart of you to notice the production work on the song and explaining it. Now it makes sense to me.
Freddie Mercury adored Aretha and always dreamed of working with her but, unfortunately, it never happened. I remember listening Freddie's radio interview when he was asked about this song.
Freddie did respect and like George Michael but he couldn't help himself not to show little envy. So he concluded his praises for Aretha and George with mischievous half-joke: "I would have done it better, dear!"

A good duet but my favourite George duet is This is not real love, which George dueted on with Mutya Buena of the Sugababes.
This is how it's done. Aretha already had a resurgence and a comeback I the eighties and visually on MTV.
