As former Cavalier member (1982-1985), this is absolutely my favorite Cavaliers show of all time. Even better than the ones I marched. A spectacularly stunning visual program. I wish you had not been told that the ending was going to be the start in reverse. And if you can find the Hi-Cam version of the show, watch that so you can appreciate the stunning drill.
This was my first year marching with The Cavaliers. Pretty cool to see that show end up on your channel. My knees still hurt because of this summer lol. I've seen this show a million times and it was really nice to see your reaction to seeing it for the first time. Cheers from Texas.
As a marching member that year, it was the hardest and most rewarding show I’ve marched! The design package was created with all sections from the ground up. Drill writer = genius!!! There were changes all summer to get to the final product
Gah.... I love *love* *LOVE* the geometric, fast, and clean drill of Michael Gaines when he was with the Cavaliers! Huge inspiration and influence on my own style. 🥰
Spin Cycle is one of my most favorite DCI shows of all time!!! They got 2nd place that year but I honestly think they deserved to win 1st place. Thank you for reacting to this show.
Hey Courtney, i think that you should totally check out Cavaliers 2001 Four Corners. It is one my fav shows. The music and movements is out of this world. Very face-paced and some powerful hornline. The ending is my fav part of the program
I dunno, Bonkers.... I was there, and BD was on fire with their Phenomenon of Cool show. So clean. Cavies just weren't as tight. I do agree the design of this show was just unreal, though!
@@tubaszubaI am a huge Cavie fan and I agree, while the visual program was amazing Bd's music and effect were better, especially at finals. Cavies and BD in the 2000's push the activity to new heights and will be always be a historic run of shows.
I almost don't even want bring this up because I *love* how you say "patterns" 😂 but if you'd like to learn some terminology, the shapes and movement around the field is called *Drill*. You can still say patterns though, I think it's a cool description! Each picture is called a *drill set* or just *set* (also called a page, since there's one set per page). They learn by going to their coordinate, or *dot* marked on *set* , then look up the next *set/page* and the instructions tell them how many *counts/steps* they have to get there. It's just connect the dots, but instead of drawing a line on paper, you're marching from dot to dot. Drill design is what I do for a living. 😊
The trick when learning how to form a circle is called focalizing. Basically when learning the drill, you set the form then turn around facing inward’s towards the circle. And then you space yourselves out. But it’s a little different with the Cavaliers. They learn their dot and not the form as much. At least that’s what they used to do from what I remember. Which is why the drill looks super clean all the time in that time period.
Fun story about this show. During a hat and gloves rehearsal in Texas during a final run through if front of a pretty large crowd, my old high school band director's legs gave out in the final circle in the closer. So right when the show ended, someone went in the mic and said "Uuuuuummmmmm well folks that's wasn't supposed to happen."
I watched this live. Also saw the drumline warm-up for semis and sprained my ankle so I was a little loopy from percocet and Miller Lite during this lol

Such a great show. I got to see it finals night in Orlando and was hoping for an upset. This show is probably better to watch only on the high camera angle because you miss so much of the visual design otherwise.
Mike Wallace Cavies 2003 is one my favorite shows from them. But BD was on another level in terms of performance. Yeah, I was going to upload the high cam version, but then I remembered how much Courtney enjoys seeing the faces of the kids and the shots of the crowd. I tried to make a mixture of high cam and standard cam and upload that, but my processor couldn't take it and the videos' audio and video were never in sync because of this. It was a frustrating experience, to say the least. I prefer the high cam version because I feel like they missed way too many great drill moments on the standard cam. Also, I STILL believe they should have won that year. I liked BD's show but I don't think BD was "on another level" from them at all. Cavies had the way more difficult show and executed it well enough to win, imo.
