2002 Cadets timpanist here. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to watch this show from the stands, but I _did_ watch it about 30 times from the side, waiting on deck in the end-zone. While I should have been getting mentally prepared to perform myself, instead I allowed my entire being to completely escape into this hauntingly stunning marvel.
@Micah the Nerd Saxophonist Hi Micah. Yeah, schlepping those kits was quite the thing. The tenors played the kits, and since there were six of them, that equaled *six* kits! Each kit was fastened in place on its own super heavy, wheeled, shin-busting platform. From the back of the drum trailer, they were always the first unloaded and last loaded, lining up longways down the center pathway. Always with the focused and stressed facial expressions of someone who's FML gingerly heaving a refrigerator up a stairwell, I remember the tenor players ferrying those raucous calamities up and down that thunderous ramp.
I have a question if you don’t mind- I’m a rising high school sophomore and last year as a freshmen I was the lead trumpet for marching band. I’m a lifetime DCI fan with a dad who was a Phantom drum major. I think I’m gonna start dci the summer before senior year but I’m not sure if I wanna go for a big corp like the bluecoats, or if I wanna start with a smaller corp just to get settled into the DCI life. Any thoughts?
I marched BK 2002. I’ll never forget the first time I saw this show that summer. People could not believe how perfectly the visuals/drill/music fit together. This was a whole new level. There was even rumors going around that the music was actually written TO the drill.
I wouldn't call that a rumor. They were very open about the fact that the 96 count front to box ( or however many counts) was rewritten musically in order to finish the visual phrase. In fact, I think there was a vignette on the broadcast that year that verifies the design decisions.
@@supersop I don't mean like a back and forth between the music and visual, during that summer people actually thought ALL the drill had been written before any music.
I am sure that music was adjusted to match the drill with several corps which is a marked difference from when I marched. Nothing wrong with it. I think it is wonderful how all the writers communicated.
To the degree that people gossiped about, it was just gossip. They didn't write the drill for a show and then throw some music to it. But obviously this is a very visually oriented theme, and so there will be major visual moments designed into the show. That's pretty par for the course these days.
Your comment at the end of the show of how “that went so fast” should really resonate with those of us that have performed out there whether it’s DCI or BOA, one moment you’re setting up and in the blink of an eye you’re snapping your horn down and the crowd is going wild. I suppose the entire season is summed up in that moment; everything happened so quick and you barely realize it, but you were there.
The designers of this show played with the audience's expectations. This performance keeps you on your toes in anticipation and flies by because of it. This was back in the days when you couldn't hide behind props/electronics, writing had to be spectacular and this show was. I spent 3 summers marching and still reflexively screamed WOW at that last drill move. The marching precision in this show is insane.
The shapes and patterns that each member creates are called drill design and the Cavaliers are known for their really intricate and mesmerizing field formations.
The Cavaliers have been known for thair marching since time began. In the 50's the eastern corps were dominating until in 1957 they ran up against the Cavaliers, to be known as "The Green Machine." They won the VFW Nationals.
Unfortunately nowadays they have seccumed to the general trend of being more theater than actual drill with so much aimless running around and props that r unnecessary; which is sooooooo fucking frustrating and annoying for a long time fan like me. I wish sooooooo bad that I could see another show like this from Cavaliers. Where is Jeff Fiedler and Michael Gains when u need him!
@@maxcherkasskikh5960 y'know this is a late response to this thread, but I feel as if DCI is feeling out how far to go with props, how to use them effectively, etc. For me, SCV 2018 was the quintessential version of what modern drum corps should aspire to. There seems to be a lack of focus on the music which, for me personally, really ruins the immersion. I think with a couple years time we will see a more refined version of drum corps where they can have props but not take away from the show.

I know Blue Devils broke the scoring record of this show in 2014 but this show is an ABSOLUTE. PERFECT. MASTERPIECE. You cannot do it ANY better than this.
So fun fact: this held the record for the highest score (99.15) until 2014, when the Blue Devils broke it with their show, Felliniesque (99.65). The Cavaliers won every caption and sub-caption except percussion, which The Cadets won. This was a completely original program; music, drill, everything. A true masterpiece through and through, and it singlehandedly changed DCI forever. It'll always have a special place in my heart!
They were absolutely ROBBED of the percussion caption. That Cadets show is great, but Frameworks has some of the best drum breaks literally ever put to field and they absolutely NAILED THEM in the final here.
I think it's generally agreed that the Cavies' early 2000s shows feature the most insane drill the activity has ever seen. A few years ago I watched a video interview on Facebook that featured, among others, the drum major from '02. He shared a few fun facts on that year: - The corps tied for first in 2000. In 2001, they spent basically the entire season sucking until the very last week because the show was SO HARD - it literally took them the entire season to get it clean. So going into '02, they really had a chip on their shoulder, feeling like they had something to prove. - This was the year they made the key change from G bugles to Bb, which took a lot of adjustment for everybody involved. - The average age of the corps was much older than usual (around 20), and most of the members were vets, so the ensemble was unusually experienced.
Was excited for this one. Been asking for it. Was the show that got me into DCI in 2002. Was in Highschool band at the time, during my marching season. The thing about memorizing drill is it comes naturally after the amount of hours you put into the show. These people, and us, run the show so many times that it just becomes muscle memory really. It's really slow going at the start when they are giving you commands and telling individuals where to go and when to be there. We had to start learning our shows before school even started, every year. We'd show up to school months before for the day, in the summer, standing outside learning drill in the hot sun. It was a lot of work, but the payoff to execute it in front of an audience was worth the time you invested. To hear them cheer for you and watch. When I saw this show, it was my first exposure to people doing it at a much higher level than I was at and it inspired me to work harder.
I marched with the Colts in 2002 and one of my favorite things about the Cavies was when we'd sometimes see them after the show (Cause we still did retreat in 2002) around the buses and all, and they were cool enough to talk about things like little pointers in the marching.
I was lucky enough to have a high school band director that marched Cavs 2001-2005 as lead mello and was horn sergent. The dude was the coolest person ever and our drill writer marched with him as well.
I marched with the Boston Crusaders this year. It was the best summer of my life. The emotional high I experienced this night is something I’ve spent the rest of my life chasing. I remember watching these guys on the 50 yard in at the old RCA Dome in Indianapolis. I don’t any corps has ever looked or sounded better, all the while performing the most insanely difficult drill and music imaginable. It’s the single most impressive 5ing I think I’ve ever seen. Bravo until the end of time, Cavies. 💚💚💚
The drill is incredible in this show but what makes the show IMO is the dynamic control and melodic nature of the brass ensemble. To play such a smooth and restrained brass book while moving so quickly is incredibly hard but they take up the task very well.
Courtney... Love ur reaction to this show. It has been by far and wide my absolute most favorite show of all time from any corp. It's what introduced me to the Cavaliers and made me their long time absolute fan. There is no way to describe the amount of thought and complexity put into this show in just a few sentences or paragraphs. If I had to put it into a short sentence I would say "This is by far the utterly most well put together show from top to bottom". There is not a single element in this show where one doesn't go "Wow!!! That was sick as fuck"! It's one of those once in a generation type shows where all the stars line up and u get an eclipse of harmony from every faucet of the corp. If I were reacting to this video having already seen it like a bazhillion times in the last nearly two decades I would have to pause just about every five seconds to appreciate and comment on every little detail that I see and hear having been a musician myself my entire life and having marched in my high school marching band in the early 2000's. And I also love how u said "Love those drums" referring to the tenor drums. That's what I actually played in my high school marching band and it was incredibly challenging and fun at the same time! :) My recommendation??? Check out "Blue Coats Tilt Full Show". Another amazing show by a corp that I never though I would like. The ending is especially riveting!
"They look like their floating"....Now i NEED you to see their 2013 Secret Society Show. They began in cloaks that if you though they looked like they were floating here....it's like they're just gliding around in that show, plus other fun surprises :) I love the Cavies. I've come to associate them with doing the most unexpected crazy things visually that you watch it and are like.....did that really just happen? Best Example would be XtraordinarY
At the time this show set a new scoring record with a 99.15. This was tied by the Cadets 2005 show ‘The Zone’ and then finally surpassed by the Blue Devils with their 2014 show ‘Felliniesque’.
Alma Mater! On Wisconsin! Go Badgers Go! Easily my favorite group but I’m a little biased because I was born and raised in Wisconsin. They are always innovative and cutting edge with each performance. And their sound is crisp, clean and powerful when it needs to be! Fantastic horn section which I know you have a love for! Bravo Cavaliers! 18 year old routine that most drum corp would not even attempt today! A testament to how ahead of the curve they have always been!
The Cavaliers have literally nothing to do with Wisconsin... They're from Rosemont, Illinois. The DCI Final being held there for a long time has nothing to do with any specific corp.
In your anticipation of loud impacts and instead them using reserved playing and silence, you should check out Star of Indiana 1993. Probably one of the first corps to heavily utilize silence in the show in that way, then comes at you full force by the end. That show was so far ahead of its time, it might still be.
This specific event was the one and only time I ever went to DCI finals. I was in a Div. 3 corps so I got to watch the Div. 1 finals from the stands. I finally got to see it from the audience side. Blew me away. I still had my heart set on Blue Devils winning that year but by the end of this performance I knew the Cavs had it in the bag.
The Cavies 2001-2002 tenors sounded and looked amazing. I marched tenors in high school and I can tell u those guys sounded way better, looked a lot sleeker and probably felt a smidge lighter than what most tenors feel like on ur body. Those things r fucking heavy even for a 6' 4" guy like me. Ur back starts to kill ya after a while. The Cavie tenors that year had a smaller and sleeker body. We had them heavy ass ones that were a lot deeper in height. Which was fucking annoying. Also... I must have broken a good three to four sets of ambassador heads my sophomore year marching season. Hahahahahaha...

I was lucky enough to attend this show! I had several friends marching with them. You should absolutely check out in this order: Blue Devils 2000, Cadets 2000, then Cavaliers 2000. Those 3 finals performances are some of my favorites. Santa Clara Vanguard 1989 (Phantom Of the Opera) is also a must see! Phantom Regiment is another amazing drum corps that will give you chill bumps! As a musician, performance major, and drum corps alum, if you ever have a chance to attend a show...DO NOT pass it up! It’s incredible the amount of sound, quality ,and power 90 musicians can produce! It will make you smile, laugh, cry, and blow your mind!!!
Pretty much everyone's reaction during the ballad, it messes with you when it speeds up and gets louder aaaand then it slows down to a soft brass ensemble sound that crescendos to the left of the field and pans to the right. Beautiful!
Yes. I saw this show in person and they deliberately pointed the horns in various directions in the stadium. It gives a a spine chilling three dimensional effect. The subtleties of the auditory, visual and emotional aspects of this show make it one of my favorites.
Michael Gaines is one of the Best Drill writers in Drum Corps History. What makes his drill so iconic is that he can write so tight with little room for error. Michael Gaines Drill is considered deadly because one slight error and the the whole show is ruined.
I was on the staff of Minnesota Brass (senior) that year, and being in the Midwest saw that show several times from the end zone or in front of the stands. I was sitting roughly row 12 inside the 40's at this Finals show. Truly one of the most amazing shows I ever saw, and every time you saw it you noticed something new. I swear that someone got kicked [accidentally] in the Fight Club portion, but didn't notice it in this video. It might only be visible in the color guard only cameras. I'm going to have to pull out my DVDs and look for it. :)
I absolutely enjoy your reactions! I can never decide which one I like most, Cavaliers "Frameworks" which I saw live in Texas or Cavaliers "Anthems Advent Collection." Those two shows are my all time favorites. A distant third would be Phantom Regiment's 1991 performance which includes Nessun Dorma and Bachanal
This is one of the best reactions. I think Courtney nailed it and SHOULD have been breathless. I completely agree with her that at a slow and soft part of the ballad or whatever we may call it, there should have been a loud part if only for half a measure. Jangle our nerves, Cavies. :) It would have been easy although I perfectly understand how it might not have been in sync with the general feel of the piece they were playing. It was a beautiful show. The drill was mesmerizing (yes, I copied a word from another fan). With my new bride, I was there enjoying my first contest in 35 years. The Green Machine lived up to its nickname. The corps and the drum major made a big "C" with their right arm if anyone could figure that out. The drum major did it in the introduction and the whole corps did in the helter skelter part as they circled (squared?) the guard.
Finally Caves 2002! 💚 They were the first ever Corp to break 99 points and the only Corp to win three championships in a row. This is one of the best ever DCI show in history. The 2000s was the Cavaliers decade. Amazing Drill/ music and all of the previous Cavalier shows you have seen ( quite a bunch) were all during this decade. This shows you how popular and unforgotten these shows are still today. Talking about Drill: 2006 “Machine” is arguably the best Show Drill wise. Make sure to check it out. You’re going to love it! 💚
Cadets was the first to three peat from 83-85 and theirs was outright. Cavies did earn their three peat, but they tied in 2000 with Cadets. So that gives the Cadets a very slight edge in the three peat category. But Cavies was dynamite no doubt about it.
Tbh, either 2001 or 2003 is without a doubt the best drill for Cavs. Like the drill for Four Corners was so insane that members were wearing braces do to the drill's demand. Honestly, 2000-2003 was just the gold standard for how drill should be
This show changed DCI. Imo...To this point DCI was very theatric, but this show added an athletic precision to the theatrics that left you breathless. The Drills from here on out just became more and more intense.
Tbh, you can really say the say for Niagara Falls and Four Corners. Like Four Corners is absolutely insane when it comes to drill. My band director when I was in high school marched Cavies 2001-2005 and he still says Frameworks was the easiest drill
It's nice to get the closer views and close ups, but Cavaliers are definitely one you want that high view for the entire show. Who knows how many different formations you miss seeing in those few seconds of the close ups.

The concept of remembering music and spots for 12 minutes seems hard but it comes to mostly everyone, even high school freshmen, because of the sheer amount of repetition you have at practices cements it
It seems that, while you love the whole drum corps ensemble, you do give a lot of love to the color guard. Perhaps one day, when this whole pandemic subsides enough that you can come to the USA to see these drum corps shows in-person, you should shoot a video of you getting a tutorial on flag/rifle/sabre spinning and tossing from a drum corps vet. Believe it or not, there's another organization that is similar to DCI but is exclusively for color guards and only runs from late January/early February to about late -March/early April. It's called Winter Guard International (WGI); and in this activity of winter indoor guard, a color guard performs on an indoor floor (typically a basketball court) and the usual hybrid of marching/choreography whilst spinning flags/rifles/sabres. However, instead of doing all this to live music by a band/corps, they do all this to recorded music. In the past, these ensembles mostly would just do this on an open hardwood floor with not a lot of scenery; however, nowadays they will drape a large sheet of canvas over the floor and perform on that while having some kind of sets placed all around and on it. WGI has a wide range of ensemble's that participate; From high school level, to college level, to open class level. My son was the opening Euphonium soloist. This is, by far, the most complex and amazing show ever performed in DCI!

I marched with the Boston Crusaders this year. It was the best summer of my life. The emotional high I experienced this night is something I’ve spent the rest of my life chasing. I remember watching these guys on the 50 yard in at the old RCA Dome in Indianapolis. I don’t any corps has ever looked or sounded better, all the while performing the most insanely difficult drill and music imaginable. It’s the single most impressive 5ing I think I’ve ever seen. Bravo until the end of time, Cavies. 💚💚💚

Sometimes I wish I could go back to the time I first saw a drum corps performance and just be complely amazed.
The drill is incredible in this show but what makes the show IMO is the dynamic control and melodic nature of the brass ensemble. To play such a smooth and restrained brass book while moving so quickly is incredibly hard but they take up the task very well.
Courtney... Love ur reaction to this show. It has been by far and wide my absolute most favorite show of all time from any corp. It's what introduced me to the Cavaliers and made me their long time absolute fan.
There is no way to describe the amount of thought and complexity put into this show in just a few sentences or paragraphs.
If I had to put it into a short sentence I would say "This is by far the utterly most well put together show from top to bottom". There is not a single element in this show where one doesn't go "Wow!!! That was sick as fuck"! It's one of those once in a generation type shows where all the stars line up and u get an eclipse of harmony from every faucet of the corp.
If I were reacting to this video having already seen it like a bazhillion times in the last nearly two decades I would have to pause just about every five seconds to appreciate and comment on every little detail that I see and hear having been a musician myself my entire life and having marched in my high school marching band in the early 2000's.
And I also love how u said "Love those drums" referring to the tenor drums. That's what I actually played in my high school marching band and it was incredibly challenging and fun at the same time! :)
My recommendation??? Check out "Blue Coats Tilt Full Show". Another amazing show by a corp that I never though I would like. The ending is especially riveting!

I love the Cavies. I've come to associate them with doing the most unexpected crazy things visually that you watch it and are like.....did that really just happen? Best Example would be XtraordinarY
10:32 my sophomore year in high school marching band we did these moves during our show and the crowds always went nuts!
At the time this show set a new scoring record with a 99.15. This was tied by the Cadets 2005 show ‘The Zone’ and then finally surpassed by the Blue Devils with their 2014 show ‘Felliniesque’.

Alma Mater! On Wisconsin! Go Badgers Go! Easily my favorite group but I’m a little biased because I was born and raised in Wisconsin. They are always innovative and cutting edge with each performance. And their sound is crisp, clean and powerful when it needs to be! Fantastic horn section which I know you have a love for! Bravo Cavaliers! 18 year old routine that most drum corp would not even attempt today! A testament to how ahead of the curve they have always been!

The Cavaliers have literally nothing to do with Wisconsin... They're from Rosemont, Illinois. The DCI Final being held there for a long time has nothing to do with any specific corp.

In your anticipation of loud impacts and instead them using reserved playing and silence, you should check out Star of Indiana 1993. Probably one of the first corps to heavily utilize silence in the show in that way, then comes at you full force by the end. That show was so far ahead of its time, it might still be.

In the top 3 of Most Well Written Shows of ALL TIME. Writing is one thing .. but the execution has to be there. This is a GREAT drum corps.

My favorite show, was so cool seeing this live early season.
This specific event was the one and only time I ever went to DCI finals. I was in a Div. 3 corps so I got to watch the Div. 1 finals from the stands. I finally got to see it from the audience side. Blew me away. I still had my heart set on Blue Devils winning that year but by the end of this performance I knew the Cavs had it in the bag.
I wish she would have said "I like the tenor tuning better back then."

The Cavies 2001-2002 tenors sounded and looked amazing. I marched tenors in high school and I can tell u those guys sounded way better, looked a lot sleeker and probably felt a smidge lighter than what most tenors feel like on ur body. Those things r fucking heavy even for a 6' 4" guy like me. Ur back starts to kill ya after a while. The Cavie tenors that year had a smaller and sleeker body. We had them heavy ass ones that were a lot deeper in height. Which was fucking annoying. Also... I must have broken a good three to four sets of ambassador heads my sophomore year marching season. Hahahahahaha...

I was lucky enough to attend this show! I had several friends marching with them. You should absolutely check out in this order: Blue Devils 2000, Cadets 2000, then Cavaliers 2000. Those 3 finals performances are some of my favorites. Santa Clara Vanguard 1989 (Phantom Of the Opera) is also a must see! Phantom Regiment is another amazing drum corps that will give you chill bumps! As a musician, performance major, and drum corps alum, if you ever have a chance to attend a show...DO NOT pass it up! It’s incredible the amount of sound, quality ,and power 90 musicians can produce! It will make you smile, laugh, cry, and blow your mind!!!
Pretty much everyone's reaction during the ballad, it messes with you when it speeds up and gets louder aaaand then it slows down to a soft brass ensemble sound that crescendos to the left of the field and pans to the right. Beautiful!
Yes. I saw this show in person and they deliberately pointed the horns in various directions in the stadium. It gives a a spine chilling three dimensional effect. The subtleties of the auditory, visual and emotional aspects of this show make it one of my favorites.
Michael Gaines is one of the Best Drill writers in Drum Corps History. What makes his drill so iconic is that he can write so tight with little room for error. Michael Gaines Drill is considered deadly because one slight error and the the whole show is ruined.
Yes, early in the season in 2004, the 007 show became the QO7 show.

I was on the staff of Minnesota Brass (senior) that year, and being in the Midwest saw that show several times from the end zone or in front of the stands. I was sitting roughly row 12 inside the 40's at this Finals show. Truly one of the most amazing shows I ever saw, and every time you saw it you noticed something new. I swear that someone got kicked [accidentally] in the Fight Club portion, but didn't notice it in this video. It might only be visible in the color guard only cameras. I'm going to have to pull out my DVDs and look for it. :)

I absolutely enjoy your reactions! I can never decide which one I like most, Cavaliers "Frameworks" which I saw live in Texas or Cavaliers "Anthems Advent Collection." Those two shows are my all time favorites. A distant third would be Phantom Regiment's 1991 performance which includes Nessun Dorma and Bachanal

This is one of the best reactions. I think Courtney nailed it and SHOULD have been breathless. I completely agree with her that at a slow and soft part of the ballad or whatever we may call it, there should have been a loud part if only for half a measure. Jangle our nerves, Cavies. :) It would have been easy although I perfectly understand how it might not have been in sync with the general feel of the piece they were playing. It was a beautiful show. The drill was mesmerizing (yes, I copied a word from another fan). With my new bride, I was there enjoying my first contest in 35 years. The Green Machine lived up to its nickname. The corps and the drum major made a big "C" with their right arm if anyone could figure that out. The drum major did it in the introduction and the whole corps did in the helter skelter part as they circled (squared?) the guard.

Finally Caves 2002! 💚 They were the first ever Corp to break 99 points and the only Corp to win three championships in a row. This is one of the best ever DCI show in history. The 2000s was the Cavaliers decade. Amazing Drill/ music and all of the previous Cavalier shows you have seen ( quite a bunch) were all during this decade. This shows you how popular and unforgotten these shows are still today. Talking about Drill: 2006 “Machine” is arguably the best Show Drill wise. Make sure to check it out. You’re going to love it! 💚
Cadets was the first to three peat from 83-85 and theirs was outright. Cavies did earn their three peat, but they tied in 2000 with Cadets. So that gives the Cadets a very slight edge in the three peat category. But Cavies was dynamite no doubt about it.

Tbh, either 2001 or 2003 is without a doubt the best drill for Cavs. Like the drill for Four Corners was so insane that members were wearing braces do to the drill's demand. Honestly, 2000-2003 was just the gold standard for how drill should be

I saw this one live. To that date, it was the highest score for a DCI performance EVER at 99.05... and the audience knew it! ;)
99.15 actually :) BD had 99.05 in 2009 for their show 1930.
This show changed DCI. Imo...To this point DCI was very theatric, but this show added an athletic precision to the theatrics that left you breathless. The Drills from here on out just became more and more intense.
Tbh, you can really say the say for Niagara Falls and Four Corners. Like Four Corners is absolutely insane when it comes to drill. My band director when I was in high school marched Cavies 2001-2005 and he still says Frameworks was the easiest drill
This is only true up until the early 2010's where theatrics and a lack of drill precision came back in full force, mostly for the worse. 🤷
It's nice to get the closer views and close ups, but Cavaliers are definitely one you want that high view for the entire show. Who knows how many different formations you miss seeing in those few seconds of the close ups.
Yes! One part really needed to be a wide shot & another was just the crowd & I'm like "f*** the crowd!". The direction was not 100% for me.

The concept of remembering music and spots for 12 minutes seems hard but it comes to mostly everyone, even high school freshmen, because of the sheer amount of repetition you have at practices cements it
True....I still remember about half of my 84 BD drill sets. 9 months of daily repetition = 40 years of muscle memory!
i dont know of anyone who doesnt think this is the cleanest drill ever performed. the biggest mistakes are like less than an eighth of a step off
It seems that, while you love the whole drum corps ensemble, you do give a lot of love to the color guard. Perhaps one day, when this whole pandemic subsides enough that you can come to the USA to see these drum corps shows in-person, you should shoot a video of you getting a tutorial on flag/rifle/sabre spinning and tossing from a drum corps vet.
Believe it or not, there's another organization that is similar to DCI but is exclusively for color guards and only runs from late January/early February to about late -March/early April. It's called Winter Guard International (WGI); and in this activity of winter indoor guard, a color guard performs on an indoor floor (typically a basketball court) and the usual hybrid of marching/choreography whilst spinning flags/rifles/sabres. However, instead of doing all this to live music by a band/corps, they do all this to recorded music. In the past, these ensembles mostly would just do this on an open hardwood floor with not a lot of scenery; however, nowadays they will drape a large sheet of canvas over the floor and perform on that while having some kind of sets placed all around and on it.
WGI has a wide range of ensemble's that participate; From high school level, to college level, to open class level.
