    I just noticed the foreshadowing they did with the painting, as Erasmus Fry was telling Richard about his visit to Mount Helicon and his discovery a trove of ancient texts.

    Oneiros is literally ancient Greek for 'Dream' or 'Dreams'. Oneiros is to Morpheus as Heracles is to Hercules or Zeus is to Jupiter.

    The important difference between Calliope and Nada is that he's forgiven Calliope but he's still salty about Nada. That's why he freed one and not the other.
    Also, his relationship with Calliope was longer than Nada's but not necessarily stronger.

    dream’s name is dream but he collects names; morpheus, kai’ckul, sandman, etc. calliope calls him oneiros because she’s greek and that’s what he’s called there.
    their son orpheus’s story will be told in the future if the show continues so you don’t really have to worry about understanding the details of what you read.

      I was dying to know more about orpheus in the show, and I'm glad they're doing a second season which most likely will reveal more about orpheus. If the next season is anything like the first, calliope might not even be one of the main characters. So eager to see what they do.

    One thing that is mention in this episode, which is said quickly but I think it's very important, it's that line from the Fates about how even Gods fade away and die, only the Endless are permanent... Which tells you a lot about the lore in this universe and the difference between the Endless and the rest of the Gods or the very powerful beings...
    Even the most powerful Gods or angels, even Lucifer as one of the most powerful beings in the universe, beings more powerful than the individual Endless themselves; are still susceptive to being wiped out or to fade away... Because even tho they hold great power, they are still "beings", of one shape or another; in turn The Endless are entities born out of ideas of universal constructs, they are anthropomorphic personifications of the basic aspects of existence, aspects that even the gods themselves, even Lucifer, are bound to an extent... That means that if you are powerful enough you can kill some of this other very powerful beings and they would seas to exist, but If you kill Dream or Desire, no matter how you do it, they will simply pop back into existence; they would probably loose their experiences, memories and their previous personality in that "reincarnation", but the entity of Dream or Death are always going to manifest themselves as long as those aspects of existence continue to be universal law.

      All gods are actually all born in Dream's realm, as stories. When enough people start to actually believe in them, they gain their own power and transcend that realm. Then over time when that belief fades, they return back to the Dreaming, as myths.

      My thought is kind of like El Bruce’s: I think Death said something like “we exist only because they believe that we do”. Now, death is an Endless, whom the Fates just said are the only everlasting, unlike Gods. So the two statements are contradictory. Nevertheless, applying the principle that Death stated to Gods, if Gods only exist because humans believe in them, then as humans have become godless over time, as various religions once popular die out, the gods of those religions would die out. Virtually no one believes in most of the major gods of Greek and Roman history, Zeus/Jupiter and such. However, the Muses, said to be children of Zeus, are still present across many world cultures, as the personification of inspiration for artists. Prayers are even said to the Muses as a means of invoking inspiration. Works of Art in the various artistic disciplines are often named and created in their honor.

      @@mynameisnoonesbusiness4488 Death came into being when the first living thing did. Destiny is even older than her. The Endless do exist to serve the living, but they aren't tied to anyone believing in them.

    Orpheus wife Eurydice died on their wedding day from a snake bite. Orpheus went into Hades to petition for her release Hades allowed her to leave by following Orpheus out of Hades. But Orpheus was told not to look back until he was out of Hades. He does and she is lost to Hades. Then Orpheus is asked to join the Maenads which he refused and he was ripped apart for being an infidel. In Greek myth he actually dies.

  • @chaosspear0195
    @chaosspear0195 2 года назад +6

    The Orpheus thing will definitely be a plot point/device if they follow the comics. The dream of a 1000 cats shows you just how powerful Dream can be where a strong enough dream can manifest and literally reshape and restructure reality from beginning to end by way of the unconscious collective.

  • @sluggardly
    @sluggardly 2 года назад +9

    The two stories in this episode combined tell us a lot about how the setting operates, how a daughter of Zeus whose son traveled to Hades in myth can coexist in a world where Lucifer is the ruler of Hell: dreams create the world anew every night. The Endless exist because sentient life exists,. Mortals follow their destinies, die, bring change and destruction, pursue their desires and come to know despair, and so the Endless *are* and will always be. But gods exist because mortals imagine them to explain their world to themselves, and if enough dream the same dream, those gods become real.
    That's what makes Morpheus a threat worthy of being an enemy of a being like Lucifer, and why the Lords of Hell might desire conquest of the Dreaming. Lucifer is one of the most powerful beings in existence, more powerful than Morpheus...for as long as people believe in Hell and fear its king. But only the Endless never fade.

    a dream of a thousand cats is a one off story and is pretty much there to show the way dream can inspire. the female probably would’ve given into despair had he not given her a new purpose; no matter if she fulfills it or not. it’s easy to see dream as irrelevant at times but if you think about it, dreams are what keeps a lot of us going.

    • @hyloguy6847
      @hyloguy6847 6 месяцев назад

      The story has another purpose too, one more relevant to the larger story... but we won't find that out in the show unless Netflix follows through and adapts the *entire* Sandman saga. Given Netflix' track record, that seems unlikely... but one can dream. ;)

    I only had an inkling when she was younger in Jed’s room getting ready to leave for NJ, but I couldn’t pin where I knew her from. Once those dreads got some color, I was like AHA FaceTime friend. 😂

    Show trivia for a change. Neil Gaiman, the author of the comics does the voice of the skeleton bird in this episode.
    If you enjoyed this show there are other adaptions of his work that you can react to.
    Good Omens (on Amazon Prime) based on the novel of the same name which he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett
    Stardust - movie based on the Novel based on the Graphic Novel "Stardust"
    Neverwhere - BBC tv series base on the novel Neverwhere (this might be harder to find)
    Coraline - movie
    The Starz TV series "American Gods" is also based on a Gaiman novel but he wasn't as involved as much as the other projects and I think the show drift away from the source. I never finished that one. I think it got cancelled.
    Orpheus btw is a character from Greek Mythology. When the Fates talking about him are referencing the ancient Greek myth. One of the tales of Orpheus his wife died and is taken to Tartarus. He goes to the underworld to bring her back. He is told he can lead her back to the surface but can't look back at her until he is all the way back to the surface world. He began walking back to the surface but can't hear her following and starts to wonder if he was tricked. When he is only a few paces from completing his journey his doubts get the best of him and he looks back, only to see his wife who was right behind him sucked back into Tartarus.

    Mount Olympus and Mount Helicon are both real world mountains in Greece. While the greater gods lived on Mount Olympus (at least under the classical period) the 9 Muses (goddesses of the arts and sciences of comedy, tragedy, epic poetry, astronomy, lyric/love poetry, dance, religious hymns, history, and music/flutes) had their own home on Mouny Helicon.

    First, i wanna say that its been an amazing ride watching you two reacting to this blindely, imma stay in case you guys watch something else that i like.
    This two stories are from "Dream Country" the third volume of the saga and the whole book its four stories like this wich are kinda out of the main arc. To me, "A dream of Thousand Cats" its maybe the most important one-storie of Sandman and it could be seen in two ways: First, as a metaphor (This one its particulary my favourite). Your dreams can become a reality, and change the world, if you believe in, and go after them. Second, as a demonstration of Dream's true power. It shows that dreams (and Dream) have considerable power over the reality, something that echoes with a hypothesis from the book that each Endless also defines their opposite.
    They don't just embody their names, but their opposites as well, and neither can exist without the other.
    Destiny = Free Will / Death = Life / Dream = Reality / (I dont name this one because it appears on the 7th volume, but since you two already been spoiled about that) Destruction = Creation / Desire = Hate / Despair = Joy / Delirium = Rationality
    About Calliope: On a scene Maddoc is watching the show "I may destroy you"" wich is about a young writer in the public eye who seeks to rebuild her life after being r*ped. A really interesting detail that totally feeds on the hypocresy of the character. I really really suggest yall to check out the graphic novels. They are even better than the series

      hate isn’t always necessarily the opposite of desire; a better fit would be repulsion or aversion. same with despair; it’s opposite would be hope.

    In the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, his wife Eurydice dies on their wedding day and Orpheus goes to the Underworld to bring her back, Hades refuses at first so Orpheus sings a song about Hades love for his wife. Hades’s wife Persephone is so moved by the song she asks her husband to set the lovers free. Hades agrees but at a price, Orpheus must lead his wife out of the underworld with her behind him where he can neither see or hear her. He can’t look back to see if she’s following, and all goes well at first but Orpheus begins to doubt and eventually can’t resist looking back and Eurydice is condemned to remain in the Underworld. Orpheus in his grief roams the earth until he ends up in Thrace and his torn apart by the followers of Dionysus. In the Sandman this is followed very closely, and Morpheus and Calliope (and even all the other Endless siblings) attend Orpheus’s wedding. You can read about what happens in the comic The Song of Orpheus. A cool musical about this myth is Hadestown.😊 (If we get a season two Dream will go on a journey to rescue Nada.)

    Since I've read the comics I know what comes next so let's keep our fingers crossed we get a season 2 (and 3 and 4) so you can find out too. I will say the only story they skipped over was how Nada got to where she was so I guess that was being saved for season 2.
    There are also audio books on Audible they put out recently. Book 1 covers the first 20 issues. The show covers 17 of the first 20 issues. I would think the 2nd audio book covers what the second season of the show would cover but I haven't heard it..
