"‘A real letdown": Disabled BC man reacts to federal budget's disability benefit

  • B.C. man James Schultz lives with bipolar disorder. He has been anxiously awaiting Canada’s federal budget, hoping it will help lift him out of poverty, as he is reliant on government support.
The Canada Disability Benefits Act became law last summer. The purpose was to reduce poverty and provide financial security for disabled community members. But when the amount was revealed last week in Ottawa, hope turned to disappointment for many.
    Global's Angela Jung reports.

What i want to see from a disability support program is an actual program, not just a cheque every month. A lot of us on disability have some capacity to work but Canada and my province's Disability support program has nothing in the way of employment support. The program should offer training and work placement as well as being connected to jobs that are willing to hire disabled workers and accommodate their needs. I cant work full time and im fighting for a job against hundreds of young able bodied and minded people. I was hoping that Canada would include more in their program to help those of us who can work a little to find jobs.

Schools offer training with their curriculum to learn something new, and if someone can teach themself then that is more possible employable training.
I think depending on what someone chooses to study at school then maybe a job would eventually be offered to a student.
Employment support is possible to get in Canada, but the results might not be as expected, or desired due to lack of education, and, or training.
Regarding myself I attended a Canadian government employment support program, and I don't think this has anything to do with a disability support program. My cousin is currently participating in an employment support program in Canada, and he is is receiving small jobs.
I was able to get work from the program I attended, but the work I received was not good enough to support myself. I did learn from my experience, and I was grateful, for the opportunity I received.
Anyway now I am taking a different approach!

How big is the government committee that came up with this tease of a benefit? How much are they paid to decide what is livable?
Get a committee with applicable experience and only oay them the max of all disability credits and support. Then have them decide.
They dont see people, they see a budgeted number and what they can do to appear helpful(while keeping their high paying gov jobs). On paper it sounds nice. In reality, its a mockery of the struggles disabled people go through.
The model for poverty threshold was the bare minimum they could find. The mbm poverty line ranges from 10k in NB to 33k in NWT. Meanwhile, cities across canada list the poverty line at no less than 40k.
Its a slap in the face

Adequate disability support is a cause that benefits everyone, not just those currently struggling. As a working individual just making ends meet, you're simply one bad accident or health issue away from being in poverty. There is no safety net for you and the government is not interested in providing one.

My problem with the disability benefit is what happens to people like me who live off of a private and public disability benefit? Im on long term (permanent) disability through my insurance that is topped/reduced by what is offered by the gov. If the $200 benefit goes through am I just going to get a reduction of my private insurance because the gov is giving me more? 5 years ago I lived ok off of my total benefit but these days Im struggling to make ends meet. 200 extra a month will be nice but I have a feeling its going to end up in just a reduction in my private insurance benifit.

A let down is putting it lightly. This is soul crushing. The government treats people with disabilities like expendable garbage while mps make on average 100K / year. Thats approx. 6.25 times more than I get from provincial programs every year.
As a mentally ill engineering student, I work very hard and it is even harder to afford everything that I need in a month and often have to make hard choices on basic needs. I live in a private room with 3 roomates for 600/ month because I cant afford my own apartment. By the end of the month I am always struggling to eat. Ive sold many of my possessions just to get by.
On top of this the government has the audacity to lie about lifting me out of poverty. I dont think the government realizes how hard it is to live in Canada when you dont make 100K/yr
I struggle with thoughts of suicide every day because things never seem to get better. But when we were promised to be lifted out of poverty I briefly saw a glimmer of hope that I never asked for. But since the announcement of 200 a month and DTC required and July 2025. Those negative thoughts and feelings all came rushing back.
I am very sure that I am not the only one feeling this way.
But it is not likely that anything will ever change for the better.
