20:40 My parents were at that game, high up on the top row of a Scotsman's Grandstand made of scaffolding in someone's back yard - good luck with being allowed to put up something like that today - and Peter Jones scored right in front of them. My mother said the crowd went crazy and everything that could be thrown in the air was thrown in the air: hats, programmes, newspapers, cushions, coats. She wondered how many people ever saw their stuff again.
A couple of months later, they met two guys who had also been at the game, not far from where my parents were, and had taken a photo of the famous try. They gave my parents a 10-by-8 copy of the photo and it eventually came to me. A few months back, I found it during a clean-up and gave it to the Rugby Museum in Palmerston North.

I still have an original newspaper clipping from 1949 of my late dad sitting with his mates (in their school uniforms - he was 18 so final year of high school.) - They had slept outside the gates at Newlands (South Africa) to watch the Springboks v. All Blacks. My late dad was an excellent athlete; captained the rugby team and took part in other sports as well - tennis, cricket, athletics, javelin and shotput. I wish he was still alive to see these videos; I just know he'd have been glued to a radio somewhere to listen to them at the time!

It was brutal stuff back then. The foul play back then would be instant red card ordering off in the modern game. The IRB/ International rugby laws back then didn't seem to care much for players'health and safety Replacements weren't allowed for injured players and some stayed on the field or teams played with one or more players down. It wasn't until the late 1960's when the IRB allowed replacements.

15:29 "...the white section of the crowd were favouring the black race against their fellow whites; the Springboks. This caused enormous bitterness..."
The "enormous bitterness" did not, however, prevent the NZRFU repeatedly caving in to South African demands that the All Blacks teams touring South Africa must be whites only. It took a very long time for the NZRFU to finally muster the courage - and the honour - to tell South Africa that there would be non-whites in the All Blacks, or no tour.

Wow! Slightly biased voice over, or what? [9:50] White comes out of a ruck. Punches one South African and then tries to throttle another AFTER that player has passed the ball. So he gets flipped over the Bok's head and then gets stamped on for his pains. Of course, that's the only bit the commentator sees!!!
This test series was before my time, but I quote from a BBC book charting the history of rugby.
"New Zealand's desire to beat the Springboks..burned like acid into the gut of the whole country. The result was a series of such brutality that....had [it] been photographed with modern television techniques...would have provoked a national outrage. New Zealand won...but at what a price.
"The first test was a brawl from start to finish and the All Blacks won it 10-6. Then, to their dismay, they saw the Springbok front row begin to assert itself as South Africa won the second test 8-3 in one of Wellington's typical strong southerly winds.
"New Zealand had suffered in the scrums for long enough to know that South African supremacy in the front row had to be challenged, and so it was, but not by the use of strength and weight and technical expertise. Instead, the All Blacks brought back Kevin Skinner, who had boxed for New Zealand.....In the third test, Skinner switched from one side of the scrum to the other so that he could play opposite Chris Koch and Jaap Bekker in turn. Afterwards, Bekker looked as if he had been in a road accident."

Ruled the world from 1896( or 1910) to 1956, when you lost the series. Then yes, you were the ones to beat, like All Blacks are now, but it wasn't a complete dominance, like All Blacks don't have complete dominance now
      Before it was Wales/Scotland/England
