I have another problem, when the handle is up and water is flowing, water is spraying out of the drain hole! It drains properly when you shut it off! Help
Because the packing nut is brass and, as such, can easily be rounded off especially if the hydrant has endured many seasons use and has more corrosion. The best would be a six sided socket, followed by a 12 sided socket, box end wrench, or flare nut wrench. I have a Prier hydrant and it looks very similar, thanks.
Perfect! Where can I buy it?
Couldn't you just leave the ears and nuts on then turn the bushing with a wrench? Thats what I've been doing.

Why not just use a open end wrench? That's what I did.

Where can I get one of these thin walled deep socket wrenches?
Why don’t you show how to get the brass fitting out of a used hydrant? It’s almost impossible!!!
Disassemble each time an attempt is made to tighten the packing nut? That’s horrible if it can’t be done with a wrench.
I think I might be at the point where I have to disassemble to tighten (or replace). The wrench won't tighten any further to stop another leak 😢
