    I liked what the one girl said " in college it's the brains that get you through, but in medical school it's the determination that gets you through."

      +Peyton Urich It's exactly the same way in graduate school in mathematics.

    • @BlueUKLouis
      @BlueUKLouis 8 лет назад +97

      +Peyton Urich That's not necessarily true because I am not smart at all, I don't get things instantly like half of the class and I have to work really hard to learn the material in undergrad. I still get the grades "needed", but I just want to point out the hard work beats talent with no hard work. Always. no matter where you are in life.

      +Rah L. so very true. I have friends who struggled to get through high school and many went on to college and excelled with hard work.

      +Peyton Urich And from a medical stand point, we can say that determination comes from your brain. It's alllllllll about the brains.

    I remember watching this video years ago as a "pre-med"/undergraduate student. Now i'm in my last year of medical school applying to residency. To this day I still can't believe I got into medical school and I'm about to graduate and get my MD. To all of those people wanting to get into medical school, do not ever give up no matter how hard it gets. Keep the determination and passion up. You will go through hard times and failures but use those as learning opportunities. Keep grinding, keep studying hard, but most importantly take care of your mental and physical health. All the best to those students who were like me in university! :)
    Edit: I matched into emergency medicine! WAHOO!!!!!!

      @@idontknow7669 Haha the nice thing about anesthesiology is that you only need to concentrate on the beginning which is putting the patient to sleep, once that is complete it's pretty much easy going from there. Other then charting, putting more meds and etc the duration of the surgery is pretty chill. I see anesthesiologists reading, working on cross-word puzzle, even doing online shopping haha. But the thing is, if anything goes wrong during the surgery, shit really hits the fan and you gotta be on your toes to save the patient's life. Things can go from 0 to 100 real quick in anesthesiology. My advice will differ depending if you are still an undergraduate student or in medical school. Everybody studies/concentrates differently. You just have to find the right method that works for you (eliminate distractions, work for 40 min then take 10 min break then repeat, etc etc). But at the foundation you have to be motivated and passionate about what you're doing.

      @@des-bk9ws I am not sure if they will respond, but because I am a 2nd year medical student I can let you in on a few things: it's good to have a dream of what you want to do as a doctor, always keep that dream in the back of your mind because it can help propel you forward. However, don't be dead set on anything before you get in. For example, I thought I also wanted to be a surgeon too but once I was accepted and went through the first year my interests fluctuated. Now I am interested in psychiatry, neurology, and internal medicine. Even then, once I reach 3rd year these could all change so I am still trying to stay open to whatever comes my way. The most important thing for you to do as a pre-med is to focus on doing well in your pre-requisites and the MCAT. Get the shadowing, extracurriculars and experiences you need to make sure this is the right thing for you. It is a long haul, and you need to know in your heart of hearts that you want to be a doctor above all else. Once you are in, you will have a whole slew of different variables to take into account to determine what specialty is right for you and which one is realistic for you to apply and eventually match into.

    a lot of decent young americans on this documentary. it's much too hard to become a doctor nowadays compare to a few decades back. much more information to learn, tough competition with students coming to study in western countries from all over the world aand more money being spent on tuition fees etc.
    the money doctors get paid are not always as good as perhaps they should be, either! all in all only those with true passion and commitment will be able to succeed in making it in this tough industry!
    this documentary was really well done!

      I don't think it's fair to say doctors don't care about the money at all. Let's be honest, you're getting raped by MCAT and steps 1-3, you're graduating with 6 figures of debt usually and have to sacrifice a good portions of your young adulthood to get through school and residency. Family life/relationships take a blow, and let's not forget about liability or those who struggle to match residency. It shouldn't have to be the equivalent of going into the seminary/convent- we aren't saints. There's a reason many doctors try to go down "the road"- match into the best paying specialties (opthamology, radiology, anesthesiology, cosmetic surgery, and derm). As for the national shortage of doctors, medicine does not ignore the economic laws of supply and demand. How do you get more doctors into the field? Start by paying them better and providing more economical benefits. "Doctors should do this just because they want to help people." Guess what? Garbage men also help people. Nurses help people. Lawyers help people. Politicians help people. Teachers help people. Engineers help people. Lame excuse right there.

    This was such an inspiration to watch as I am going through my pre med courses. Sometimes I feel like giving up but then I get drawn to these videos. And now I am up at 1:02 am, refocusing, and educating myself more. The only thing thats harder for me is finding a balance and that I am young and have a family as well. But coming from a huge family where discouragement and negativity was always lurking about, my wife and son makes me get up in the middle of the night and fight to become a doctor. They are the reason I want to succeed.

      One is currently working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo helping to stem the tide of the evil that is Ebola. Another is living in the city of Port Charles, working as an orthopedic surgeon at General Hospital. One is living at a transition house in Queens New York, currently enrolled in a city run Methadone program, after unfortunately losing their medical license after being ravaged by opiate and cocaine addiction due to the stresses of incurring so much student debt. One lives in Napa California as a general practitioner and operates their own family medical clinic with their Father, who is also a medical doctor. Lastly, one gave up medicine after only 3 years to work as a heavy equipment operator in Auburn California.

    Loans... this is part of the reason Medical School is so expensive, especially if you have a family to support. Nobody we followed had parents paying the bills.
    Mark, the guy with kids had 2 of them born during medical school, maybe even the oldest too, I can't remember. He is the oldest in this video as he started medical school a few years later than most the others.

Because you believe in life & a purpose & a reason for your being. I love that. Sometimes I think mentally ill break , but if I look for something beyond myself idk it just calms me or something . thanks for the upload - future Dr. (;

      I'm in a premed club where doctors come in and present. They all have multiple backgrounds of their education. Majority of the doctors say, "You don't have to be smart, I sure as hell wasn't..." In a funny, yet serious way. I'm sure you are smart. You just have to have the desire, the passion, the commitment, to choose this specialty, especially.

    Everybody is sharing their story in the comments so I would like to start my own:
    9/2022 I have my first med school interview tomorrow. I’m really nervous
    10/2022 I got waitlisted from one of my top three programs. It’s the first post interview decision I’ve gotten so it’s hard to stay positive when the first one isn’t a success.
    11/2022 I got my first medical school acceptance! I’m so excited!
    9/2023 wow med school is a lot. I get what they mean when they say the information never stops. It’s hard, but I passed my first round of exams with above class average scores. I’m excited to get further in

      @@calamity1189 hey! Thanks for asking! I ended up getting 3 total acceptances and some waitlists that I withdrew from. One being the school I was waitlisted at during October. It is the same school that I went to in undergrad, a T25 school, and very near my home so I committed there. I’ve been doing all kinds of things to prepare to start school, traveling, and just relaxing. My school year begins in less than a month and I’m excited to see what the future holds! (6/2023)

    This would really make such a great idea for a running series all about the experience of different students in medical school...... both as a documentary and as a drama series..... I know I would just LOVE watching this as a regular series....and have "stories" from DIFFERENT medical schools and teaching hospitals in America......and even overseas, like ISRAEL, LONDON, PARIS, et al... It could certainly inspire kids in high school to consider going to medical school in the future....

      I agree with you Vivian, God through & through got me from the tragedy of a failing class (by a measly 0.04), to be told you can't into these elite hospitals with that GPA. But you know what God restores! To getting multiple job offers from prestigious hospitals, some of the nation's top 10, and that was even after being let go by my first hospital because they thought I wasn't picking up skills fast enough. To 5 years later working as a healthcare professional. Amen to all that God has done in my life. Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of Hosts (Zechariah 4:6)
