Hermann Prey could hold extremely slow tempi as a relatively young singer : I think of the "Quoniam tu Solus Sanctus" of the Richter version available on youtube.
God, I used to sing this at his tempo. My Voice teacher wouldn't have it any other way. A purest. This Impressed everyone as I wad a young baritone singer with a great extension to low C.... then in my late 20s to early 30s my body forced a fach shift into tenor. Now I have a Frankenstein's monster mash fach sounding like Corelli and Vickers.... no I didn't think it possible either... lol.
This is one of the most beautiful rendering of this aria I have ever heard. This is the only Wagner aria I have ever sung when I was in voice class and I was surprised how hard it was to sing. I was misled by the very reasonable tessitura and the slow rhythm. You must realize it takes two sets of lungs to sing this!!! Not easy, not easy at all. One needs perfect breath control just to go through it.

Sie ist zur Zeit tief im Westen zu sehen und geht gegen Mitternacht unter, was aber sich noch etwas verlängert. Keiner oder kaum Einer singt die schöne Abendsternarie so schön wie Hermann Prey.

Da der wunderbare Abendstern zur Zeit am Himmel steht, wenn leider auch nicht lange, passt die schöne Arie besonders. Die Venus betrachtete ich schon als Kind sehr gerne, wenn ich sie damals auch einige Zeit als echter Stern sah. Ich kenne mich nicht so gut mit Sternen aus, schaue mir aber manche Videos an, die interessant sind. Die 2.Strophe "Da scheinest du, o lieblichster der Sterne" gefällt mir besonders. Die Stimme geht höher und auch ins piano.
Er ist und bleibt der Beste! Alles empfunden und auf höchstem technischen Niveau! Er hängt die Konkurrenten um Welten ab...von der Schönheit des Timbres ganz zu schweigen...ein posthumes Bravissimo, Maestro!!

Bei mir war es, als ich mit 13 Jahren Hermann Prey bewusst das erste Mal hörte .Das war die "Winterreise", wo ich ihn auch etwa 8 Jahre später öffentlich hörte. Diese Arie hörte ich mit ihm etwa mit 15 Jahren. Der Abendstern ist noch zu nahe an der Sonne. Im Dezember geht die Venus über 4 Stunden nach der Sonne unter und könnte dann auch am Tage zu sehen sein, am Abend aber auch schon 1-2 Monate früher.
4.35 "zu werden" ist genial. Was die einen "unsteady" finden bedeutet hier gesungen mit Intellekt und tiefem Verständnis. Viele Sänger scheitern an Wagner, weil sie nicht wirklich deutsch verstehend sprechen können sondern es deutsch dahinsingen.
Andre Hangout Ich bin nicht so sehr für Wagner. Doch diese Arie gefällt mir besonders. Mit Hermann Prey hörte ich die Abendsternarie schon früh und mit 16 Jahren konnte ich die Arie in-und auswendig singen. Auch, wenn ich damals noch nicht wußte, wer der Abendstern war. Sie ist wieder am Himmel, aber noch sehr kurz, was sich aber verlängert. Die Venus war im letzten Jahr im Spätherbst und Winter als Morgenstern und ich sah sie am 1.Dezember sehr groß. Sie ist nur voll beleuchtet, wenn sie 250 bis 261 Millionen km entfernt ist, weiter als die Sonne und wird von ihr bedeckt. Am 1.12. war sie fast ein Viertel in 60 Millionen km beleuchtet und größer als sie sowieso schon ist. Auch noch einige Tage danach und erst recht 2-3 Tage davor. Da war es aber leider bewölkt.
Oh, ich danke Dir für Deine äußerst feinsinnige Beobachtung‼️ Tannhäuser ist für mich (neben "Götterdämmerung") das tiefste musikalische Werk des Verständnisses vom Menschen (und zugleich das schönste)‼️

The tempo is not wrong, if the singer can frase that way you can do it.Total poetic, frase by frase, like Klemperer german ideal, no regular subdivision, no metronome at all. That is German School, tone and fluidity. I like this version very much.

Bei dieser wunderbaren Arie aber nicht. Der"Tannhäuser" ist zum größten Teil lyrisch. Schön, wie Hermann Prey den Abendstern besingt. Sie ist auch wunderschön zu sehen, später am Morgenhimmel. das dauert aber noch 5 Monate.
Bravo! You have a quite outstanding ear,that allows you to perceive so many intonation problems in this version, while i perceive only perfection and excellence both in intonation, interpretation and beauty throughout the whole piece. I must be deaf and stupid.
it's a little bit flat, but that's ok, it gives a melancholy tone; to the majority of people in voice music it's a big no no, but violin soloists, for instance, do this all the time.
@axelmimi 1. The Warren recording was not made the night he died! He died after singing his aria during a full performance of La Forza del Destino... not a recital, and not Tannhauser!!! The Wolfram aria was apparently a recital, probably years earlier.
I agree that a string came in too early as Mr. Prey was finishing, but it doesn't sound flat to me. All I hear is a great singer giving his interpretation of this most beautiful of arias. My personal favorite is Thomas Hampson. His recording from 95/96 is perfection!
Maybe he's had a beer or a glass of champagne before he went on stage .... no problem with that. You can't perform that way if you're "drunk". Intonation: This is a cruel piece. Haven't heard it flawless .... it doesn't forgive the slightest slip ... still ... I will always love Prey's Timbre (4:43 .... goosebumps!!!)... check out his son .... amazing similarity ...
Prey himself in his autobiography stated he never had natural excellent intonation and it was something he always had to work on. Really comes through in this performance unfortunately. Love Prey
@ilbacioditosca I pressume fluidity and tone are most important in a German Baritone because of the higher difficulty in maintaining a legato (the hard consonants mostly) than in Italian opera. This is what I was told.

Bellísima interpretación, equiparable a la de Fischer Dieskau. No obstante pienso que la mejor es la de Leonard Warren en el Recital en el Metropolitan, la noche en que falleció en plena interpretación de "Urna fatale" (Morir tremenda cosa ...), cuando interpretó momentos antes "O du mein holder ...", en una forma maravillosa.
Antes del aria suele haber un recitativo y luego el aria denominada de la estrella,que a mi modesto entender pudiera ser una canción, es decir un LIED ALEMAN que lo cantaría mejor uno de los más grandes barítonos que ha existido y que es DIESCHAU o apellido algo parecido pues no lo recuerdo...
Er singt das neben Weiteren auch schön. Doch Hermann Prey und Dmitri Hvovoskovski singen diese schöne Arie besonders wunderbar. Ich bin nicht so sehr für Wagner, aber den "Wolfram" mit dieser schönen Arie und dem "Pilgerchor" gefällt mir besonders.
IMO, Prey's voice is very unsteady and, too often, below pitch. He sounds to me as if he's relying totally on his musical memory to get through this old chesnut of an aria. Ironically, he sounds his best in the closed "e" sounds, which, I suspect take more energy and focus. In general, I think he was having a bad night.

Noch steht an der Sonne unser zweitnächster Planet zu tief und ist noch mit über 200 Millionen km sehr weit weg, was sich aber im Spätsommer bald ändern wird, besonders im Dezember. Als Morgenstern ist sie mit Anfangs 40 Millionen km schneller da.
@salalavil I only said that intonation is no correct, but I know perfectly that music isn't just intonation or musical precision, and yes, I do have a very fine ear,...if u can't hear intonation problem here, you are deaf, yet not stupid....

it's a little bit flat, but that's ok, it gives a melancholy tone; to the majority of people in voice music it's a big no no, but violin soloists, for instance, do this all the time.

@axelmimi 1. The Warren recording was not made the night he died! He died after singing his aria during a full performance of La Forza del Destino... not a recital, and not Tannhauser!!!
The Wolfram aria was apparently a recital, probably years earlier.

I agree that a string came in too early as Mr. Prey was finishing, but it doesn't sound flat to me. All I hear is a great singer giving his interpretation of this most beautiful of arias.
My personal favorite is Thomas Hampson. His recording from 95/96 is perfection!

Maybe he's had a beer or a glass of champagne before he went on stage .... no problem with that. You can't perform that way if you're "drunk". Intonation: This is a cruel piece. Haven't heard it flawless .... it doesn't forgive the slightest slip ...

Prey himself in his autobiography stated he never had natural excellent intonation and it was something he always had to work on. Really comes through in this performance unfortunately. Love Prey

@ilbacioditosca I pressume fluidity and tone are most important in a German Baritone because of the higher difficulty in maintaining a legato (the hard consonants mostly) than in Italian opera.

you've got to check out Leonard Warren doing this song. Absolutely beautiful, transparent rendition. A gorgeous instrument used sensitively.
Warren’s sensitive performance surprised even his fans because he tended to sing songs with unvarying dynamics-e.g., his sea shanties, “Road to Mandalay” and others. But not “O du mein holder,” which he sang sensitively and beautifully-effortless mezza voce and diminuendi, and flawless phrasing. Although two of his American predecessors, John Charles Thomas and Lawrence Tibbett, recorded it and sang it in concerts, only Tibbett, a bass-baritone, imbued the music and text with a sensitivity close to what Leonard Warren gave the aria in this “live” performance:

Wolfram ist ein lyrischer Bariton. Prey ist ein wunderbarer Sänger, hier jedoch eine Fehlbesetzung
Bellísima interpretación, equiparable a la de Fischer Dieskau. No obstante pienso que la mejor es la de Leonard Warren en el Recital en el Metropolitan, la noche en que falleció en plena interpretación de "Urna fatale" (Morir tremenda cosa ...), cuando interpretó momentos antes "O du mein holder ...", en una forma maravillosa.

Antes del aria suele haber un recitativo y luego el aria denominada de la estrella,que a mi modesto entender pudiera ser una canción, es decir un LIED ALEMAN que lo cantaría mejor uno de los más grandes barítonos que ha existido y que es DIESCHAU o apellido algo parecido pues no lo recuerdo...

Victor braun sang diese arie mit abstand am besten.
Er singt das neben Weiteren auch schön. Doch Hermann Prey und Dmitri Hvovoskovski singen diese schöne Arie besonders wunderbar. Ich bin nicht so sehr für Wagner, aber den "Wolfram" mit dieser schönen Arie und dem "Pilgerchor" gefällt mir besonders.

Do you undestand what he is singing?
IMO, Prey's voice is very unsteady and, too often, below pitch. He sounds to me as if he's relying totally on his musical memory to get through this old chesnut of an aria. Ironically, he sounds his best in the closed "e" sounds, which, I suspect take more energy and focus. In general, I think he was having a bad night.
I think you just want to bitch and have absolutely no taste in music.

Noch steht an der Sonne unser zweitnächster Planet zu tief und ist noch mit über 200 Millionen km sehr weit weg, was sich aber im Spätsommer bald ändern wird, besonders im Dezember. Als Morgenstern ist sie mit Anfangs 40 Millionen km schneller da.

Iv'e hear Prey sing a lot better than this. He sounds a bit insecure here. He was one of the best- but not here.
He's around 60 here. Recital in Moscow if I'm not wrong.

I only said that intonation is no correct, but I know perfectly that music isn't just intonation or musical precision, and yes, I do have a very fine ear,...if u can't hear intonation problem here, you are deaf, yet not stupid....
