What is so great about his voice, in my opinion, is that it can be recognised immediately; he has a unique sound, I don't know what it is...absolutely wonderful.
I agree. Hermann Prey's artistry was discreet. He sang with simplicity, from his soul and with no affectation or exaggeration. His timbre was just exceptional.
Perhaps the most beautiful Baritone-voice of the last 50 years. Mr. Prey was excellent as a Liedersinger - his rendition of "Die schöne Müllerin" with Leonard Hokanson is a masterpiece of subtly singing. And in his book "Premierenfieber" he gave a worth reading essay about "Winterreise".
@Cornelia In a sense, DFD is evaluated as a perfect performance. It is to create a world associated with the intent of the score. The important thing is that most vocalists try to have a loud and outstanding voice Voice volume and income are proportional, but musicality and voice volume are not.
Lyrics : 1. Was soll ich länger weilen, Daß man mich trieb hinaus ? Pourquoi devrais-je attendre encore Que l’on me mette dehors ?
The Reichssender Berlin in 1944 recorded the Hans Hotter miracle which is setting the standard after 70 years...in my opinion DFD's best performances are those from the first years with billing and klust, even if Hotter is sublime...you must also consider Souzay's version with Baldwin, which is in my opinion more penetrating and insightful than all the other versions excepting Hotter's.
Definitely a worthy interpretation by a great baritone but the two best are by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and by Peter Schreier. Fischer-Dieskau is definitely the all time mast of the lied and the greatest baritone of the 20th century!!!!! Sone even consider his the greatest singer of the recording age!!
Beautifully sung but without expression. There's no anger here - or frustration - or surprise - or despair. Prey was a good Singer with a beautiful tone but not an Interpreter. The meaning of the Poem is irrelevant to him.

Wonderful wonderful singing.
Appreciate the simple interpretations of this great song.

Magnifique Monsieur Prey, par delà les cieux ...
MARVELOUS HERMANN PREY🙏🕊️🎶
So sensitive and nobile performance!
It would be fair to also name the pianist, since he is contributing the other half, next to vocals!
I guess this might be Helmut Deutsch
Prey great as ever and as a nice bonus one can pracitce one's Italian ...
Beautiful!
Do You know when was this recorded?
Preys Timbre ist unverwechselbar.
So ist es! Wunderschön!

Does anyone know when this was recorded by the way? :)

how old is the recording? Prey looks older than when he did le nozze di figaro
Mooi
What year was this from?
This was in 1984.
