Grew up with this WONDERFUL car! It would be AWESOME to have one again!
That's a nice car. A friend of mine has the same car in a dark red color, and it has the same beautiful interior too.
You can tell by the distance between the radio buttons and the radio dial that it's a really big radio filled with those nice vacuum tubes!
The engine shouldn't have been that hard to get started after sitting overnight. The correct starting procedure wasn't being used. I'm pretty sure that this is a Fluid Drive car, and I believe the 1950 Chrysler products with Fluid Drive probably use the same starting procedure as my 1948 Chrysler. Most people don't know that when the engine is cold these cars, the engine starting procedure is different than what we generally would use. I referenced Fluid Drive because my mechanic taught me that on these
cars the automatic choke uses the carburetor mounted micro switch for the Fluid Drive to also actuate closing of the choke plate. The gas pedal can be pumped if need be. However, once the engine is cranking it's necessary to touch the gas pedal lightly one time. The reason is that this is the only way the choke (choke plate) will set. The choke can only be set during engine cranking. Not before or after. While the engine is cranking, give one light touch on the gas pedal. If it needs to be pumped up, stop cranking, pump the gas pedal, resume cranking, and again give the gas pedal one light touch to reset the choke plate.
It's a strange set up Chrysler was using in this vintage, but I seem to recall that Chrysler developed the automatic choke.
Hardly anyone knows about starting a cold Chrysler Corp engine from this vintage, and I hope I was able to help someone.
Our family '50 DeSoto did NOT even have a radio! A lot of these were sold like this! It was just THE BEST car ever, though!
My dad had a 1954 DeSoto and that thing was a "tank". It had a very smooth ride, a Fire Doom V-8 engine. One thing I still remember is the "huge" oil bath oil cleaner.

Just as I thought, those battery cables are TOO THIN for a 6 volt system. 6 volt starters drew twice the amps as 12 volt starters, so you need 1 gauge, not 4 gauge cables. The smaller number is thicker wire. That's why it cranks so slowly. The starter is not getting enough amps.
Otherwise, the "flathead 6" NEVER FAILED! My dads '50 DeSoto started at -20 when most newer cars FAILED! You just need to understand the older motors!

Desotos are wonderful cars I just bought a 56 for my channel and am currently parting it out to a subscriber in Norway
My neighbor back in the early 80's had a 1949 Desoto 4 door black had some great times in that car crousin in San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland all over the bay area of California summer time up to the lake Berriessa it was like being in a lemosien.

I hope that you still own this GREAT car! I grew up with a used (dad bought 11/3/59) '50 DeSoto Custom! These weren't fast (off-the-line), but they could run 85-90 mph ALL DAY! This GREAT car STARTED AND RAN at TWENTY-BELOW-ZERO and PLOWED through six-foot-high snow! These were BEAUTIFUL, QUALITY CARS!

I had a 1946/47 Desto Deluxe 4-door my grandparents bought new. My grandmother couldn't remember if it was a '46 or '47. Same green color. I had the local Dodge/Chrysler/American Motors
dealership rebuild it and repaint. The mechanic told me he was so happy to see this model once again. I was drafted (Vietnam) and left the car with my older brother, promising me he'd take great care of it... Well, I came home and he had all but ruined it. Ruined the motor, ruined the fluid-drive, ruined the body, broken window glass... broke my heart! I didn't have any money to fix it, and no place to store... I sold it to a fellow that had wanted it since he'd seen me draggin' Main Street with it. Unfortunately, he didn't get to rebuild it. Poor guy came down with brain cancer and couldn't beat it. Sad story all the way around.

My dads' DeSoto had magenta colored dash lights! These were AWESOME and I have never forgotten the "DeSoto-by-night"!
A '50 DeSoto would ALWAYS start and run! My dad's DeSoto endured MANY Minnesota Winters! It NEVER failed!
Great 50, but your battery cables are too small for 6 volts. 6 volt starters draw twice the amps as 12 volt starters do, so you need thicker cables. The skinny 4 gauge cables are just too small for a 6 volt system. That's why it cranks so slow. Can't carry enough amps. You need 1 gauge cables, and you will have to go to a human-owned auto parts store, not Kragen or O-Reilly's. You need to sure the float level is correct in the carb, as it should not hesitate when you toe-in the gas. It is probably too low, or maybe your heat riser is stuck open, which means a cold intake manifold. Great for racing, but not so great on a street car. Hope you know how to use the Fluid Drive correctly. Many nowadays don't. They think it is a stick, and something is wrong because it "won't go into 1st gear".

That’s a beauty! I had the exact same car, except mine was dark green. Exact interior down to the radio and the plastic shift knob. My flat-head 6 was so smooth and quiet that a friend once said at a stop light “Aren’t you going to start it back up?” when it had never stopped running. The “tip-toe” transmission was great too.

@@johnmaki3046 I can relate to what you're saying, And in my my dad's DeSoto he had multiple colored dash lights,🟪🟦🟨🟥 , the hydramatic transmission, has a mind of it's own, I owned a 53 Dodge Coronet that was supped up , between that car and my 1958 Cushman Eagle I always had transportation back and forth to high school, but the 6 volt system really stunk 🇺🇸♥️‼️

I live in Northern Minnesota, where it gets to TWENTY-BELOW ZERO for days at a time! This was EVEN MORE TRUE in the 60s, when my dad had this GREAT OLD CAR! IT NEVER ONCE FAILED TO START WITH NO EXTERNAL HEAT SOURCE AS IT SAT OUTDOORS!@@TomSpeaks-vw1zp

I grew up with our family's '50 DeSoto Custom! I guess that I am prejudiced, but I believe these were THE VERY BEST American cars! Other MoPars (of the era) were also! I just LOVE the "look" of this AWESOME car!

I never saw a parking brake warning light like that. How many models and model years had the feature?
I have driven newer Mopars with automatic choke & wondered about your starting procedure until you mentioned the out-of-commission choke.
Maybe it's a good thing that I cannot develop an emotional connection with any cars produced in the last few decades. That DeSoto is a car I could love.
That was typical ChryCo in the late 40s and early 50s.
My dad replaced the automatic choke with a "hand" unit! He believed this would help the m.p.g.! I DOUBT it did, but I learned how to "do" the choke to start/run a "flathead 6"! They were "hard-on-gasoline", but WHO REALLY CARED at .27?!
Thanks, I was wondering what that flashing meant as it didn't seem to correlate to charging or anything else other than the key was on. Now I need to find out how that heater system works and why such a large item next to the radiator with a control on it.

I learned to drive with a '50 DeSoto! My first car was a ($15) '51 Dodge Coronet! If you KNEW these cars, they would NEVER have starting problems!

That was on 1949, but not 1950 cars.
DeSoto (1950) didn't "trash-up" the car with "stamped wood-grain"!

@@johnmaki3046 Lots of folks, lol. But it's gonna need a recap at the very least and probably a new or rebuilt vibrator and any out of tolerance resistors. Contrary to popular belief, the tubes seldom go bad in them.

The car needs points and plugs and condenser for it to run smoothly. The carburetor is set a little rich according to the exhaust.

The DeSoto Custom had the wood grain. The Deluxe like this one was just plane as seen here.

Where did you get parts for it?
Trim parts MIGHT be a problem! Mechanical parts are EASY! The motor/chassis of these GREAT AUTOMOBILES went on for decades! Chrysler KNEW when it had a WINNER!

All DeSotos had this from '48 on! This was a GREAT transmission! It wasn't "fast", but it NEVER failed!

Why is that light on the dash blinking?
That's the parking brake reminder! The blinking light will shut off once the parking brake is disengaged.
