Islam was known to Ethiopians before the majority of Arabs even heard about Islam. Three Wise Men, who knew the birth of Jesus even before the people of Israel heard it, were Ethiopians. The first person who held Prophet Muhammed when he was born and who breast fed him was an Ethiopian black woman. Her name was Barakah. He called her his mother.

They were pagans before the Roman empire spread it's brand of Christianity which was a form state religion and a creation of doctrine.
