Hi Apollo, been watching you since 2015 when i discovered your channel as a sophomore in high school. Now I'm 24, a father, and still look forward to watching your videos. Although you don't know me, I feel like you've been here for a good chunk of my adolescence, as well as my entire adult life. I appreciate you and your content more than you know, and for what it's worth, thank you. Your third age videos have gotten me through tough times and given me comfort when nothing else could. Not sure if you'll see this, but if you do, that would be awesome! Thanks for everything man, I will forever watch your videos (Pls post more third age :D)
This battle was quite fun and was thankful to be apart of this one and the Moria one 2nd time being in an Apollo video so hopeful to be in more in the near future and more replays to come.
The people of Rhovanion were enslaved and suffered much hardship from Rhun and the Wainriders, where most of them eventually moved into Calenhardon and became the Rohirrim
Black powder was around before Saruman made those bombs. Gandalf used it for to make his fireworks. Doubt anyone was making giant cannons at the time though haha. But then again there was a some wild devices in middle earth so its not impossible.
Tolkien never went into serious detail about much of Rhun and the Easterlings outside of their interactions with the west (mostly Gondor and Rohan, though they do also appear to besiege Dale and Erebor at the same time Mordor is sieging Minas Tirith) and service to Mordor. Which is why a lot of what you see in Third Age and its submods is speculative or loosely based on how they look in the movies. So there's a lot of creative license going on. I know Divide and Conquer gives them a crazy hwacha-like unit as well as some firebomb throwers. Is it canonical? Probably not. But it works in the framework of Medieval 2, which already has gunpowder units to adapt, and makes for some interesting gameplay variety.
Rhovanion was destroyed by the invasion of "wainriders" (I don't know the spellings) and the invaders were kind of like the people of Rhun and they destroyed Rhovanion and that's where the story of "Eorl the young" come in he's the first king of Rohan and they were the one's who escaped the invasion of Rhovanion he went to war with the wainriders along with Gondor
I absolutely adore this map, it is always tough to balance cool aesthetic and effective defence design and I think they really nailed it with this one, looks so unique as well when compared to the other faction's architecture.
in the books mordor and Isengard have gunpowder ( although they use it in a very limited capacity, mostly for mining i think ) so i dont think it would be much of stretch to say mordor gave some to rhun ( especially since they were mordors greatest human ally), as for the cannons yea i agree that would be stretch.
Generally the Rhovanion split into becoming Dalians and Eotheod of the Anduin and the Eotheod because the Eolingas or Rohirrim of Rohan. Though it's possible stay-behind-clans of Rhovanion men and Anduin men never migrated and stayed where they settled. Example Saxons migrated into Britain but half of them definitely stayed in Germany hence 3 regions called Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony. Which is funny because J.R.R based the Rohirrim and Dale on the Saxons.
Hey Apollo have you tried out the Freecam mod for Medieval 2? It gives you much more control of the camera ,so it seems great for your replays! (and it will help in maps like Moria)
Lore Slam Dunk! This Rhovanion faction is based on the "Kingdom of Rhovanion", a realm between Mirkwood, Mordor, the Lonely Mountain, Long Lake/Esgaroth and Dorwinion, and was created from a collection of divided principalities during the early Third Age. These principalities used to fight with each other often, some even allying with Easterlings against Gondor, until one of the many princes named Vidugavia rose in power, becoming the first King, uniting the surrounding peoples, and gaining the favor of Gondor. While the kingdom has Rhovanion in the name, it only controlled and influenced the eastern parts of the greater region. The Northmen of the Rhovanion Kingdom are based on the Goths, an ancient Germanic tribe, and are the ancestors or early relatives of the Men of Lake-town, Dale, Vales of Anduin, Mirkwood and Rohan. These descended groups are based on other Germanic groups like the Norse, Franks, Frisians, Lombards and Anglo-Saxons. Wilderland is a combo of "Wilderness" and Land, so it should be spoken as "WILL-der-land". You can pronounce the "van" in Rhovanion like the white windowless vehicle that randomly pulls up to my driveway at noon.
I think the faction isn't done yet because the unit descriptions are kind of funny and whack. And they're flag in the battles , is the timurid faction or whatever from medieval 2 that had elephants with cannons 😅😅
This fictional battle reminds me so much of the historical Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC between the Persian hordes under King Xerxes and the Elite Spartans (and auxillary athenians/greeks) Under King Leonidas. The Rhunic side representing the Persians (much superior numbers but generally less skilled troops) uses their sheer numbers. For reference, Xerxes's best warriors were called "The Immortals". Here, the Rhunic side has the Khamil's chosen immortals troops. Another similarity is the Rhovanion hoplites. The Greeks used their skilled hoplites in said historical battle to great effect over 2,500 years ago. I can go on and no but basically, funnily enough, there are a lot of similarities between the fictional battle here and the historical Battle of Thermopylae. Great video as well. Always glad to see LOTR content being uploaded.
this is a really cool city design, i'm curious about more of those. Also i'm curious about if they changed stuff about like the old siege maps like helms deep
I was thinking to myself "Damn, how tf do 4 armies have enough money for the fodder and all of these elite units" and then it showed at the end it was a 5v3 lol, yeah those are steep odds
Damn i wanna see apollo hit 1mil Ive followed this guy's videos since he still has 200k Everytime i watch these battles, its just a stress relief from stress
I'm more of a fan of Sinn's original mod, it's the one I still play, I just don't like the stuff from the Hobbit and these fantasy units like a cannon it makes it feel more like Warhammer than Lord of the Rings. I like his original work, though, and I wish Sinn luck with this mod, it's a lot of sleepless nights and hours; well done regardless.
to my knowledge, the only instance of gunpowder-like substances were the "bombs" conjured by Saruman. sadly sieges don't work for me in this mod, so it is great to see them here! keep it up boss, it's my 6th year watching ya, great vid as always!
just how many invincible trolls did the attackers have? and i bet the defenders regretted building 20 thick walls which fell over when someone leaned on them
Well the istaris studied in rhun to become magicians because rhun had the best magicians teacher at the time ans best scientifique they had black powder since middle of the 2nd age :)
in Lore gunpoweder in Loftr dont exist, in the books they use a dark spell of saruman on the wall or at least not in eny weapon of eny faction nation etc blabla
These battles are just too large scale. When it gets so framey you can barely enjoy it, then it's too much. It's not any less epic at that point to have less troops but be able to see everything as intended.
The men of Rhovanion where inspired by germans and norse (im mean they are called northmen ffs) im kinda dissapointed by the slavic angle of this faction. Peter Jackson did the same with Dale its just wrong.
Their unit description in the campaign mode Literally says blah blah blahMy name is jeff no shit lol😂😂 everyone else's units get a beautiful articulate Description and lore lol
0:32 Apollo in fact did not spell it on the screen.

Not sure.
There is not much of volcanos in Middle-earth, so it is possible for wizards strictly control gunpowder for themselves.
You could read some lines from the Numenor story drafts as suggesting small firearms but it seems Tolkien dropped it after that
I thought his fireworks were magic.
@@Pohuhopl1wouldn't gun powder be needed to make bombs like the one they used to blow up the wall
@@Pohuhopl1what’s the correlation between gunpowder and volcanos?
This is the game that introduced me to your channel years ago
Same bro…. These are the best battles on the channel to this day

This settlement is one of the many new maps for 0.98 made by Eclipse, who can be seen defending today.
I loved the good old third age reforged battles
If you enjoyed the video don't forget to subscribe to Apollo let's hit that sub milestone!

This battle was so heated that the wall had to burst into flame. Freaking epic battle.
Gandalf let off fireworks in the shire
Keep making this amazing content it only gets better
Almost forgot to put my siege pants on. Thanks for the reminder Apollo
Fellowship Of The Ring has begun.

Ah, LotR siege battles in Medieval 2. This is what I subbed for.
Almost 2 minutes in and I know for a fact that it's going to be a great battle.
And yes Apollo, you did pronounce Rhovanion correctly :)

The attackers are so desperate that they spammed clicked their troops movements behind the defensive lines of the defenders, which for me is cheating.
