I'm working on a BIG quilt - all hand-quilted so was glad to come across your video! I realised after watching that it's 6 years old - and I was struck that you now have an (almost) 6 year old! It's crazy to think about! Thank you for this - great video and really enjoy your teaching style. x
Thankyou so much for this tutorial, after watching you I plucked up the courage to hand quilt a lap blanket I am working on, knots popping at both ends of the thread, it worked!!!! Lap quilt all quilted today now just to bind, that is my job for tomorrow. My beloved sewing machine is 20 yrs old and isn't happy quilting but I now love hand quilting thanks to you. Many thanks from Bonnie Scotland
Time after time I return to your hand quilting video as a refresher. Thank you - your videos are clear and easy to follow. Keep making more helpful videos. I am 76 and never too old to learn!
Ok, so you are absolutely adorable! I’ve been sewing for 55 years, quilting for 15. I absolutely hate (I know, strong word) hand sewing of any kind, but I love the homeliness of hand quilting. Stitching in the ditch first makes the hand stitching not so overwhelming. You my dear, will have me try it!❤️
Hello from Ontario, Canada. Doing chores "by hand" is part of my farm life and discovering how to hand quilt has been on my list of Things To Learn for a while. After doing a few searches online for hand quilting, your video "How To Hand Quilt" (Oct 28, 2018) peaked my interest so I grabbed a cup of tea and sat down to watch it. Girl, I am quite happy to have found you. You inspired me to jump into this new adventure giggling with excitement. Thank you so very much, I will definitely be following you on your website as well as on RUclips.
Has anybody shown you the multiple needle trick? If doing a lot of sewing with the same colour thread, you can load the threader with a lot of needles at once, pull the first one away from the others and allow the thread to pull through the rest. Holding the spare needles against the spool, leave enough thread to wrap around them enough to hold them there, after you get the length you need to cut off. Next needles already threaded. Put the used ones in a pincushion as you finish with them. Start again when they are all empty. This saves a lot of time and messing around. For hand patchwork, my best needle size is a ten, I use european 50 rasant thread, it is cotton wrapped polyester. I am educating myself by watching you lovely you-tube quilters, before I try hand quilting. I have plenty of crochet thread for crocheting, should be easy to find what works. I am a jewelly maker too, so I have tools (pliers) I can use to pull a recalcitrant needle through, and save my gouty hands when it gets hard. Thank-you for your tips.
I sewed a quilt some years ago and then never actually quilted it because I was so intimidated after watching a couple of videos. I just watched yours and got totally psyched to get started! Thanks for a great lesson!
Just wanted to thank you so much for your clear instructions in hand quilting, burying the knot, holding fabric in my lap to make stitches even, etc. So helpful, and I did it! Finished my granddaughter’s quilt in time for Valentine’s Day, and didn’t cry once. Hope you have your beautiful baby now and are safe and well!
I love that style! Well, who am I kidding. I love all hand quilting styles. I think because I spent my younger years adoring Amish and Appalachian quilts, I tend to strive for those teeny tiny stitches with the thin thread and the short little sharps. I remember one neighbor telling me about a quilt that she made which would’ve been the State Blue ribbon winner one year if she had kept her stitches to over 6 per. inch! Still, one flannel quilt I made using pretty big stitches and embroidery floss, was one of my very favorite finished quilts. I tend to use very large decorative stitches and thread in quilts with interesting fabrics, like flannel, satin, corduroy or velvet, and I tend to use small stitches and normal thin, white, thread with my cotton. Like I said, I think the cotton ones seem to cry out for that Amish and Appalachian tradition to me. Ahhh! I just love it all. ❤😂
Hello there, I just wanted to thank you for teaching me how to hand quilt. It took a while to get the gist but now I am "away". You are so right, the feel of a hand quilt cant be compared to a machine quilted piece. I totally love to look of the little ripples in the piece, tugging the thread fairly tight on my new wall hanging. Thanks again Suzy and all the best. Cheers from Germany
great video ! I'm French and I discovered quilting art yesterday in an American movie and I'm obsessed ! I'm going to start soon, thank you for your video and very useful explanations !
I have watched numerous videos and your video has been the most helpful. You are very detailed with your instructions, and the camera position was spot on. Your voice and tone are very pleasant to listen to. I especially love that your work space is so immaculate. Please make more videos!
I agree totally! Voice and tone are critical for me... there are a couple of makers whose work I admire, but I cannot stand the pitch of their voice. One of these people is excessively animated, which is a turn off for me personally when trying to work through a video tutorial.
Oh dear, this is sooo unique! I am an avid crocheter and NEVER quilted but has been yearning to do so for long. Time issues though. But this video is definitely an encouragement to do hand quilting.
I can't wait to watch this video but wanted to offer up a little tip on knowing where to look. I was HORRRRRRRIBLE at recording for the longest time from my cell phone so I started just adding a little piece of the sticky part of a post it note and popping it right above my camera lens. It worked wonderfully. I can't WAIT to see this video! I used to LOVE watching my mom lap quilt as I was growing up and am just getting started in my machine quilting journey, also! Once I get used to all of the concepts using a machine, I am going to make my first lap sewn quilt. Now back to regularly scheduled programming. HEHE!
After leaving behind quilting for 11 years I am just getting back into it, Mar. '19. I remodeled a 1,825 sq. ft. home all by myself: EVERYTHING from electrical, plumbing, ceramic, hardwood flooring, exterior siding, etc. Very detailed construction. Project completed Dec. '16. Now it is my time for sewing once again. I have been gathering information of all kinds to see what is new in the world of quilting. I discovered Thimblelady out of Australia and I am completely mesmerized by her products and tutorials. I figured if I could do construction I can change my sewing ways to be more effective with quilting with practice. New found information was provided me by watching this informative video. Pleasant, detailed, and instructive. TYVM
I did a hand quilt for the first time in 1996-1997,that was completed. I dedicated to my parents. I called it " A Parents Love." I began the quilt on July 1996 and finished on July 1997. That same year my father on September 17, 1997 passed of diabetes. I dedicated in his memory and although my mom at the time was living I decided to name this quilt "A Parents Love." The quilt measured 36x36. I know that in that quilt there are a lot of imperfections. However, life is about imperfections and we learn by the nurturing of our families. Above all GOD himself when we draw near to Him. I love quilting, my grandmother did a quilt while she was in a nursing home. She had given it to my mom and my mom passed down to me. I guess it got me interested into this lovely craft. Best of luck and thank you for a wonderful tutorial. Looking forward into see more tutorials on hand quilting. I sure like to polish my skills at this. GOD bless you and your cute dog...:)
I loved your demo. I am a first time subscriber to your channel. I was Blessed with a Quilting frame on a rectangle stand. Some one from my church gave it to me for finishing a quilt his wife made for their Granddaughter. His wife was in the nursing home and wanted to give it to her Granddaughter before she passed. I was able to finish it for her and she gave it to her Granddaughter two weeks before she passed. Her Husband was so pleased with the work I did , he paid me for the work and gave me the quilting frame too. I was so surprised. He said his wife wanted me to have it because I had made it possible for her to give the quilt to her granddaughter while she was still with us. They were a lovely couple and it was my pleasure to do it for them. I didn't even want to get paid, but they insisted. And I was told when some one does something good for you never rob them from the Blessing in doing so. I will never for get her. And I feel Blessed in knowing her.
I found you on the RK calculator app of all places. This the first tutorial I watched and after 6+ years of thinking I would never tackle hand quilting, you’ve converted me.
Omg! So cute. Like Snow White lol. I have never quilted but my mom does great on sewing machine. I hate sewing machine. Can't wait to try hand quilting for my husband and kids. This was sooo helpful. Thank you so much.
It took me a while to figure out what that thing she used to mark her quilt was. It sounded like "hair marker" but it is actually a "hera marker" in case anyone is trying to find one. Loved the video, Suzy. Thanks!
Love this video! So helpful. FYI, Sashiko needles are long because the technique is to bunch up multiple running stitches onto the needle before completing pulling the needle through the fabric. Also the Sashiko thread is a specific style of fairly thick non-separating ply for strong quilting and mending. That’s why it’s different.
So glad I found your channel. You're a nice lady, you explain in a natural manner not overly sales-y and relaxing to listen to and you don't do annoying stapstick jokes every other sentence like most utubers.
Creating creases for the stitches! Brilliant. I hand quilted a baby blanket and ended up using masking tape for lack of another way to do straight lines...it was a miserable! I’m encouraged!
Just watching you quilt is therapeutic, so I can imagine how I'll feel when I get started. Thank you for sharing your methods, products, and everything that you love-- especially that Leather Thimble.
Yes the tutorial has been very useful, thank you. I particularly like the idea of using thicker pretty threads and making it more personal like handwriting.
Just found this. I'm a beginner sewer and would like to get into small quilting projects. I love your easy to understand teaching style. I live that you give the rationale for everything. Thank you!
I'm a very begibing quilter, square one. I'm making a simple first baby quilt for my first grandchild. I loved your relaxed style in your video! I'm not a perfectionist, I want this to be fun and your video was fun! Thank you, :) Cindy
I am brand new to quilting; just took a beginning quilting class at my local quilt store. I loved the class and, at the age of 68, I am trying to follow my grandma's footsteps. The class taught how to do everything on machine - and that's perfectly fine, but I want to learn hand quilting also. Your video was so easy to understand and follow - especially because you tell the reason WHY you are doing what you do. I know you're busy with the new baby, but I look forward to new video's from you. Thank you so much! Kathy in Indiana
I used to embroider and wanted to learn how to hand quilt. I must say, I really, really enjoyed this video. It was informative, light and easy to understand. Thank you for doing this.
I've never seen your blog but now I want to read it. I think you are adorable. Sometimes I hate watching how-to videos but you are so helpful and likeable. AND I freaking LOVE your quilts. Also, you're hair looks so cute! A cute messy not a bad messy.
I exclusively hand piece and quilt. I have taught myself. I also cant use patterns so I just make stuff up lol. I started last October and am currently on my 5th king size. My sweet husband even made me a a frame that sits over my recliner. So I just swing it around while i am watching tv every night. That knot was super handy to learn. I've basicly just been making stuff up as I go all willy Billy. With no prior sewing experience at all.
I'm just starting to quilt and have not done my own machine or hand quilting. Your video was exceptional and as much fun to watch over and over because that's what I do. 😊. Very helpful.
This is a great how-to video. Thank you so much. I'm going to start a quilt this winter. I'm hoping to complete two by next winter for my grandchildren.
Thank you for your ideas. I haven't hand quilt in years because I thought it was not possible without a large quilt frame. That's how I was taught. I'm so glad to see it can be as simple as doing it at the table. My next one will be handquilted.
Thank you so much for this video. I have recently started hand quilting - a baby quilt for my grandchild soon to be born. Your video helped me so much, it’s all I needed. Thank you for inspiring me ❤
I have learned so much from this video! I am not much of a hand sewer but want to quilt my future great grandson's baby quilt! Loved how you didn't finish the binding! Great technique! I think I can Do this! Machine quilt and hand quilting super awesome! Exactly what I was looking for. You, your video and voice are beautiful! Thanks so much!
Thank you sew much. I am familiar with machine sewing but I am trying to get a group of girls together to make a quilt for an auction for a year or more down the road, and you had a lot of really nice easy to follow tips and tricks. :)
I've just discovered you through this video. I'm ten minutes in. What a measure you are to listen to 🙏 Your personality is lovely and the information is great!! Xxx
You are absolutely adorable, and your video on hand Quilting got me hooked on Your channel. You explain what you do why you do it except others for what they do and how they do it but you’ve taught me the confidence. I’m finally doing some hand quilting. I wanted to do this forever I have plenty of “tops to put together, and usually I take him to the long arm, but there’s a couple special quilt. I would love to Hand quilt.
I completely agree! Suzy, you are an amazing video tutor. I felt as if you were speaking to me, which is a wonderful skill. I'm excited to hand quilt my 2 projects now after watching your video. Thank you!!
I learned the quilters knot in my high school sewing class (I have taken the most random electives throughout my academic career - lookin at you, college golf) but had no idea that there was a name for it!! Loving the video :)
Hannah Boehmer I have always used the quilters knot because that's how my mum taught me, she wasn't a quilter, in fact had never heard of it, she learned it at school in 1918. My sister in law had never seen anyone tie a knot like me but now I can tell her it's a quilter's knot 😀
This was a helpful video... and OMy goodness that baby bump would be around 5 yrs old now. Amazing and blessings on your child! Thank you for this video.
What a great video, thank you, I LOVE your beautiful way of talking, warm and clear so I'm hanging on every word.....looking forward to learning along with your guidance xx
I was just at a quilters shop to drop off my quilt to get machine quilted. It has some appliqué that I have always wanted to do but did not want to machine quilt over it. I was told they would not be able to quilt my quilt 😢. So I left and headed to the internet to see what I could find. And I found you 😊. I will stitch just outside the ditch and the hand stitch the rest. Thank you. I’m so happy i found your tutorial. I know you made this a while ago, congratulations on your baby 🥰
I’m way late to the party but thank you so much for this! It helped me tremendously! I’ve been too scared to try my hand at hand quilting but I’m going to start today! I received a quilt too from my mom that was made by her grandmother and she passed before she could sandwich and quilt it so I’m going to finish it. I’m on my 4th quilt too now and I’ve made other items as well. Thanks again!
I enjoyed your tutorial. You covered all the elements of hand quilting to make a novice like me think I could try this one day. Thanks for taking the time to share your talent and knowledge with us. I’ve admired your quilts for along time. Now I know what makes them so different than most.
Hi from Illinois I am a new quilter and this is what I need right now! Thank you. I enjoy listening to you and I subscribed! Congratulations on the baby!
I am making my first quilt for my daughter. Was really worried about the hand sewing because I have RA. Thank you so much for the rocker demonstration. I needed to know that.
When I am at the end of my piece of thread when hand quilting, I make another quilter's knot close to the surface of the quilt and pop it through. Loved your video!
Love your tutorial and how an edge of a table top helps (a thin plastic cutting board would help also) , also using a 5 lb weight to help hold the quilt on that table is an idea. Thank you for sharing the knot, started from the needle. Than I have not seen shared before. Please continue sharing your videos!
Thank you so much for your informative video so I’m going to be watching all of them. We need more people who teaches how to hand quilt. I’m watching so much. I feel like I can do the whole quilt by myself even though I’ve got a Sewing Teacher but they don’t want to hang quilt so I have to learn to do this.❤❤
Thank you for your tutorials. They are so simple to follow, and fun to watch. I have been afraid to hand quilt, but feeling more confident now. I also love your combination of hand and machine quilting 😁
I am working on my first quilt it is a lap quilt. I love the idea of stiching above the ditch then hand quilting. I will be looking at all of your tutorials. You explain things extremely well...awesome teacher. Thank You!!
So helpful!! Thank you! Bought all the supplies. About to try my first hand quilt on a mini wall hanging quilt. It’s so cute and tiny and not worth paying someone to machine quilt. I didn’t like the way it looked with a stitch in the ditch on my machine so I unpicked the whole thing. I love the thick thread you use. So excited to try it. And dude, thanks for teaching us how to “pop the thread”. Woot!!!
I found this video because I've never quitted and I don't own a sewing machine. I got it into my head that I would like to take several shirts from a friend, cut them into squares and hand sew a quilt. There was a lot of good information in this video and I'm pretty excited to get starred. Any advice is more than welcome.
What a lovely relaxing tutorial, you have given me a lightbulb moment with our in the ditch by machine then just a bit of pretty hand quilting to compliment it.. thanks and all the best with your new baby, Jules from Oz
Your videos and product recommendations have changed my quilting game...giving me confidence where they sorely lacked in the past. Thank you Suzy...you are adorable in addition to knowledgeable.
Thank you. I am wanting to learn how to quilt using my grandmothers old aprons. My family used to quilt back in the day, and I have some beautiful heirloom quilts but I would love to showcase my grandmothers aprons instead of lying in some drawer.
This is a good demonstration for 'accent quilting' on a project that you already machine quilted. I am a hand quilter - and this is completely different than what most of us do. Have you ever been to a 'quilting' - 4+ quilting ladies around one quilt - and spending hours getting it done?
That's the only way I've ever done it. Lots of fun and especially when the group is gifting it to someone like a newlywed. Frames are nice to leave up also, if one has the room to leave it up
youre literally so charming i Never watch long tutorials all the way, i always skip around. but somehow you made this so nice and cozy to watch. like we're old buddies or something haha youre pretty great
Thanks so much! You are so sweet and really explain the ways to quilt. I have done quilting for 2 years but I was not satisfied so I wanted to watch some more videos so it will be easy and consistant for me. I love your style. Now I will just quilt the way you do and see if it works for me. Thanks again! Love form a quilter.
Oh my gosh thank you sooo much ... I hv watched this several times.... I enjoy hand binding and I think hand quilting will me a longer relaxation that I get with hand binding ... please do more hand stitching videos like doing curves and such... thanks again
I also love a leather thimble. They break in and fit your finger perfectly. When I develope a thin spot or hole, I have some leather gloves that I've lost the mate to, and I cut out a generously sized patch. I glue it over the hole with fabric glue. Get all the way out to the edges with the glue. I honestly like some of my patched thimbles BETTER after being patched---it's heavier in just one spot and fits like I've used it forever!
I learned to knot like that as a kid. My mother & Grandmothers quilting group used to have my sister & I string short needles onto spools of thread for all the ladies would have them ready.
It has been a long time since I have quilted. This video was perfect. You did a great job of explaining and demonstrating. I liked how you kept it real. I will absolutely be watching more. Thank you for the refresher.
I've just taken up hand sewing a patch work by hand I don't have a sewing machine only making small things. Ur videos are very helpful I've had a few needle threader broke over 7 now so just trying thread my needle by hand.
Thanks so much! I should have watched this before attempting my first quilt. Couple things I have been doing wrong…I was popping the knot, but did the knot too close to the fabric & hand quilted too close to the edge of fabric. Now I know! Great information. I am learning as I go. Thank you 😊
Sooo when are you sharing your makeup products and makeup routine? I love it!!! Ps I loved the hand quilting info too! I feel more confident now in trying this out!!
I loved your video and look forward to more. I'm sure I will review it again after I finish piecing my quilt and get ready to hand quilt. Thanks so much for the great information.
Sashiko Does use a wider weave linen style fabric traditionally, but the length of the needle is more about the technique I think. It uses only a running stitch and you are basically trying to do as long of a stitch in one pull as possible. Longer needle means you can poke through the fabric more times before you have to pull.
Great tutorial! I learned hand quilting many years ago making a Grandmother's Flower Garden square wallhanging, but we used sewing thread, as you mentioned, so though you can see the texture (which I love!) the actual stitches are lost. I really like your philosophy and approach! Thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom!
I'm working on a BIG quilt - all hand-quilted so was glad to come across your video! I realised after watching that it's 6 years old - and I was struck that you now have an (almost) 6 year old! It's crazy to think about! Thank you for this - great video and really enjoy your teaching style. x
Thanks for the info! I can’t wait to start. I’m turning 50-year-old NFL curtains into a quilt for my husband!
Thankyou so much for this tutorial, after watching you I plucked up the courage to hand quilt a lap blanket I am working on, knots popping at both ends of the thread, it worked!!!!
Loved her leather thimble. Never would've thought of that
Yes the tutorial has been very useful, thank you. I particularly like the idea of using thicker pretty threads and making it more personal like handwriting.
Just found this. I'm a beginner sewer and would like to get into small quilting projects. I love your easy to understand teaching style. I live that you give the rationale for everything. Thank you!
I’m so glad you found this helpful!❤
I'm a very begibing quilter, square one. I'm making a simple first baby quilt for my first grandchild. I loved your relaxed style in your video! I'm not a perfectionist, I want this to be fun and your video was fun!
Thank you, :)
Cindy
I am brand new to quilting; just took a beginning quilting class at my local quilt store. I loved the class and, at the age of 68, I am trying to follow my grandma's footsteps. The class taught how to do everything on machine - and that's perfectly fine, but I want to learn hand quilting also. Your video was so easy to understand and follow - especially because you tell the reason WHY you are doing what you do. I know you're busy with the new baby, but I look forward to new video's from you. Thank you so much! Kathy in Indiana
Just found you. I’m just getting ready to try my first hand quilting. I feel like I got enough basics from you to feel confident. Thank you
I used to embroider and wanted to learn how to hand quilt.
Haha! Thanks fellow Susie! ;)
Thank you for inspiring me ❤
Never realised that you used what I call crochet thread for quilting. Must try it.
You’re exactly right! He turned 5 a few weeks ago 😂❤
Tulip needles come in all sizes. They are fabulous .
I’m so happy to hear you have a quilting plan you’re excited about! I’m actually a week away from having my third baby, so thank you! 🥰❤️
You are ADORABLE!!! I love using thick thread in multiple colors for quilting on a solid fabric quilt! I think it looks so pretty
Video is great ❤ you have a lovely calm voice, makes easy to watch and instructions are so good.
This is the best hand quilting video I’ve seen. Very intuitive and informative. Thank you!
Thank you!
That was enjoyable. I love your sense of humor. Thank you for that!
I had thought you stopped making videos. Then I found out that I can't be notified of content. You had been making them all along!!!
I enjoyed your tutorial. You covered all the elements of hand quilting to make a novice like me think I could try this one day. Thanks for taking the time to share your talent and knowledge with us. I’ve admired your quilts for along time. Now I know what makes them so different than most.
That quilt in the background is SO beautiful!
Just ordered thread, thimble and needles. So excited to give this a try. Thanks for the great video!
I feel like I can do the whole quilt by myself even though I’ve got a Sewing Teacher but they don’t want to hang quilt so I have to learn to do this.❤❤
Congratulations and thank you for the showing looking forward to more videos Donna
Your presentation is upbeat, youthful and targeted with clear information. I am hooked on Suzy Quilts!
Sounds like a dream group of friends 💜
That's the only way I've ever done it. Lots of fun and especially when the group is gifting it to someone like a newlywed.
Frames are nice to leave up also, if one has the room to leave it up
You look like a Disney princess! I've machine quilted for years, your video may get me to hand quilt one. Thank you.
youre literally so charming i Never watch long tutorials all the way, i always skip around. but somehow you made this so nice and cozy to watch. like we're old buddies or something haha youre pretty great
Your "messy hair" is cool! It's not really messy and messy hair is actually stylish now a days. Great video! Thanks thanks!
Well, you are a delight! Thank you for being so thorough and really pleasant:-)
Finally !!!! Quilting by hand !!! I’m so happy ❤
Oh my gosh thank you sooo much ... I hv watched this several times.... I enjoy hand binding and I think hand quilting will me a longer relaxation that I get with hand binding ... please do more hand stitching videos like doing curves and such... thanks again
you are adorable 💕
thank you so much 💓 for your tutoring experience ❤️ I learned a lot from you!
love from Minnesota Minneapolis ❤️
This video is great! I cannot wait to try this. I have always machine quilted but I want to try this....today! Thank you!!!
I like that idea. Thanks 😊
I love your energy and how you explain this. Thank you so much!
Great video, looking forward to trying my hand at hand quilting with your tips on needles, thimbles and thread
I've just taken up hand sewing a patch work by hand I don't have a sewing machine only making small things. Ur videos are very helpful I've had a few needle threader broke over 7 now so just trying thread my needle by hand.
She is very detailed in her description of, for example how to avoid problems. Sincerely, Bobbie from Silver Spring.
Thanks for the great, informative video! Happy toddler years. Happy sewing 🧵!
Thanks so much! I should have watched this before attempting my first quilt. Couple things I have been doing wrong…I was popping the knot, but did the knot too close to the fabric & hand quilted too close to the edge of fabric. Now I know! Great information. I am learning as I go. Thank you 😊
I love this video. I have yet to hand quilt but watching this gives me the confidence to try it!
Sooo when are you sharing your makeup products and makeup routine? I love it!!!
Ps I loved the hand quilting info too! I feel more confident now in trying this out!!
Love your style and delivery 😃. I've done some machine quilting and was curious about hand quilting... you've completely converted me!
This was SO helpful! I have started hand quilting my quilt, but this tutorial gave some awesome tips I did not know about!
Just now cam across your video. hank you for this! Looking forward to watching more of your videos....if you're still making them.
