I have just come to understand that guys doing 20 yards a day solo are either lying or just really average which in my opinion is sub par. We are looking to go full time this year and being perfect is something that I will struggle with. Now I have the time make sure each piece of grass is trimmed or blown off of a driveway whenever i go full time I will not. However, this does not mean that I wont be in a rush where I burn down the grass where I trim to to pick up a couple minutes because I am moving so fast (#1 complaint) or where I wont have time to communicate (#2 complaint) or cut a yard that doesn’t need to be cut and tear it up just to be able to charge for a mow (#3 complaint). If I am to busy (which happened with Christmas lights) I give happy/happy prices. I am happy not getting it, or if they accept my bid I am really happy with what I am making. There are customers worth firing. I have one fellow that was not happy with any of my communications prior to putting up lights, happy with the job we did, and then after we pulled them down, was not happy that we left the lights behind that he wanted to store, was not happy that we left them on the trashcan that was right next to his garage instead of leaving them on the ground. Which was really the only place to leave them without leaving them on the ground or putting them in front of his front door. All in all, if we weren’t in front of each other, everything was very negative.
I completely understand there are some customers that are just not happy people no matter what we do. In my opinion at that point you just walk away. I am praying you have a great 2025 and wish you all the best in going fulltime. You nailed the top 3 reasons people have complaints. You are way ahead of the curve man. Goodluck and God bless

I think the economy had us all stressing and wanting to hustle as much as we could in 2024 because I feel the same, I just took on everything and felt like I could never stop and breathe for a second
I think everyone starts a business because they have worked for others and said why not me . I’ll be the boss. Then you build the business the best you can . The quality is there and the business grows. You get a good reputation and more clients. The bottom line is you can’t spend too much time on a regular account. It looks good, go to the next one. So many clients expect things done for nothing or as a favor. If it’s not in the contract to trim the hedge then tell them that. I’ll make time next week leave the money or put it in the check. Great video and topic, and perfectly timed. I honestly believe that God established my business, customer base, and skill sets. Knowing my work is a reflection of what truly motivates and drives me, I try to do every property as if God is the customer. How many times in my life I’ve been discouraged wondering if I’m wasting my time, it’s then that I ask God to remind me I’m actually serving Him, not a customer. There are some times that I know I’m skirting profits but rather than lessen the quality I tell the Lord “I’m doing this as an honor to you, help me to love and serve this customer as unto you”. God doesn’t work for me, it is I who work for Him. A scripture that keeps this thought fresh is Collosians 3:23👆🏻💯👊🏻

@@DOCREAL1118 Yes sir, we haven’t bought a domestic vehicle in decades we use to be loyal Toyota owners until they became so greedy and their quality took a major hit, we switched to Subaru.
Hello Shane. Good to hear your voice and sincerity. I am glad you brought up this subject and your recognition of your slight loss of quality. I believe most of it was caused by your pain and not be healthy to your capacity. I believe most starting educated lawn companies have quality as a priority. As more clients are obtained that quality goes down due to the pressure of volume and the desire to make the most money per day. It becomes a daily challenge or goal to reach more at the cost of quality. I appreciate that every client is offering jobs. That is precious and an opportunity to perform your skills. Every lawn care person should consider themselves an artist that sees the condition of the yard and envision how it will look like after applying their artistic skills with aesthetics and quality. Quality equates to a repeatable business. The client will only want you to maintain their yard. A repeatable business will always provide you work. The win-win situation is to reduce your clients so that quality is maintained but finding the clients that can pay more offsetting letting some clients go. Like the 80/20 principle. That is 80% of your revenue comes from 20% of your clients that you focus in on that quality. The other clients may bring in the other 20% of your revenue and still down with quality because you’re not overwhelmed. The higher paying clients are your new customers that you obtain with your 2025 pricing. Over time you can let go of the low end paying customers. Shane, as you said this work must be done with quality and a sense of pride. We all should be happy realizing real people are offering jobs to the artist and not just the lawn guy.
Thank you so much for replying and this really opened my eyes a bit and gave me a different perspective. So very well said. I wish I could get points across this well but I do it my way. Thanks again and God bless brother!
How much further do you think you could take the business lawn business while getting older? Is the quality going down with aging and pain? I’m 59 years old and slowly falling apart with bone on bone pain in need of a right knee replacement and plantar fasciitis in my left foot. Successful 146 lawn accounts and working solo. I’m trying to hang on 6 more years until I could fully retire. What’s your plan? Are you gonna stick it out with lawn care until you reach 66 retirement age?
Everyone is different circumstances. I read a comment of an individual who spent 23 years in the military, 35 years working something else, then started his lawn business at the age of 58. He is now 81 and still is working the business with quite a few clients. I don’t think he just does it for the money but the love of operating his lawn business. I am 64 years of age and have been losing feelings in my legs. Today Sunday, I fell to the ground as my legs collapsed. I am probably finished.

Fair Warning Notification: Here comes the book. Hey, Doc! I hate to burst your bubble, but you are NOT unique in this situation. I think you're a little off in thinking you've let things go over the past five years. Go back and watch your videos, Brother. It hasn't been that long. It's ONLY BEEN the last couples of years that you've been hyper-focused on money. Look at the past comments of the esteemed gentlemen here. They too have been focusing on money. "I" have been focusing on money! Dee has been focusing on money! That girl can squeeze ten cents out of a penny! Why? Because of this lousy economy! When two bags of groceries, TWO BAGS, cost $140there's a BIG problem, and WE ALL focus on money and how to TRY to save. Sometimes we HAVE TO cut corners. In cutting corners, YOUR customers have not suffered because in almost every video, you talk about taking care of them and giving them the best you can. It's only been this last year that you've really struggled to give them what YOU would like to. We ALL know why! Brother, your health comes first before anything or anyone. Your customers know your pain too. They understand WHY you can't do what you've done before and know that soon, your old practices will be back! I understand how you feel, believe me. I've been in pain since 1993! Pain? YUP! But, it's all a part of life for MOST of us here! We all handle it differently. You worry A LOT about being judged by others, including your customers. This is a good video. Stop worrying!! The lead up to any surgery makes us reflect on pretty much everything! Your customers treat you pretty darn well! They obviously love your service or they wouldn't keep you. Hang in there, Brother! Better days are right around the corner! We're all praying for your surgery to go smoothly, for no more pain and for a quick and full recovery. Have an awesome day! Well after reading this, take some Tylenol, THEN have an awesome day! God bless you and Sarah! You'll get through this!! Hi, Sarah!
I really appreciate this book! It means a lot to me that you guys see things I don't. I am so busy doing it day to day that it seems so far away from me at times. God bless
@@DOCREAL1118 Brother, we are all our own worst judges, but you take it to a different level. Your customers will let you know if they're displeased. Don't be so hard on yourself and your days will go by more easily. Take a deep breath and relax. God bless.
The lawn care business is really not that easy. We have to know our numbers. A lot of people under charge, and as a fellow solo operator we have to charge a premium for premium service. You can't get Ruth Chris for McDonald's prices. Any way don't beat yourself up. Charge a premium price for premium service, and do less jobs.
I don't understand why you dont hire a part time guy to help you 2 to 3 days week, i dont think you'll go broke plus it will help you. I'm 58 i try to schedule all my doctors appointment in the winter when im not as busy, but sometimes it may not work out.
I may do that this season just to get through the first part of the year. I didn't know my hip was bad until Dec. 10th of this last year and had friends to help. I do the same thing in the offseason unless it's an emergency. God bless
Hey hey brother, always great to hear from you and a good video! I share some same views! BTW best of luck to you on the surgery coming up soon ! I'm more of a quality over quantity kinda guy ! I like a great emd result!! So anyway best of luck to you in the 2025 season, keep the faith and God bless to you and Sarah my friend! Take care Shane and prayers to you on the hip surgery you'll do well 🙏 !

God bless

Very good assessment of the situation and encouraging Mr Roberts.
Couldn't agree with you more about this statement 👍🙏
I don't understand why you dont hire a part time guy to help you 2 to 3 days week, i dont think you'll go broke plus it will help you. I'm 58 i try to schedule all my doctors appointment in the winter when im not as busy, but sometimes it may not work out.
I may do that this season just to get through the first part of the year. I didn't know my hip was bad until Dec. 10th of this last year and had friends to help. I do the same thing in the offseason unless it's an emergency. God bless
Thanks for the honest video doc. Happy new year. Hey Trump is my president
