Chem1.1A albryancada: Cambridge was and still is a powerhouse in the study of things pertinent to the scientific community to this day. The discovery of the electron (1st sub-atomic particle) by Sir J.J. Thompson with the use of a particle accelerator in the 19th century paved the way for succeeding scientists up to this day in better understanding the purpose and workings of the electron, among other things. Good episode. ✌

Question! How did Thomson be able to distinquish the particles in his apparatus? how did he have any idea what was going on during the experiment? both in the heating plate and at the end screen.

ok can anyone answer this question for me, since I am not a typical science know it al. How can they just shoot electrons only thru any experiment, when I thought electrons are part of the atom, and atoms can not be torn apart into seperate particles? Do we have the technology now to suck away just the electrons from the atom and shoot them thru a beam like this experiment is suggesting.

Actually, with this experiment, Thompson was able to determine the charge/mass ratio of the electron. Later, Millikan measured the electron charge with his oil dropplets experiment, and therefore the mass of the electron was determined. At least, that's what I learned. Great video anyways :)
