Chem1.1A albryancada: Cambridge was and still is a powerhouse in the study of things pertinent to the scientific community to this day. The discovery of the electron (1st sub-atomic particle) by Sir J.J. Thompson with the use of a particle accelerator in the 19th century paved the way for succeeding scientists up to this day in better understanding the purpose and workings of the electron, among other things. Good episode. ✌
Question! How did Thomson be able to distinquish the particles in his apparatus? how did he have any idea what was going on during the experiment? both in the heating plate and at the end screen.
CHEM 01- EDA- NALDOZA A remarkable video! It's really good learning new information about the discovery of the electron. Dr. Cox explained it very well that can be understand easily. Great video! worth watching!
1XELabuntog: Sir Joseph J. Thompson is a genius! But just one question, are there any differences between the Particle Accelerator and Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)?
CHEM 01 EDA - REYES I learned so much from this video. Dr Brian Cox was able to convey the scientific facts as he takes us on a journey through the history of particle physics. In this episode I also learned how J.J. Thomson discovered the fist subatomic particle, the electron. What a great video that helped me reinforce my learning from my Chemistry class! Truly Amazing :D thumbs up for Dr. Brian!
1.1 ROA: In 1897, the electron was then discovered by Sir J.J. Thompson by the use of cathode ray tubes. The electron, hence, is the first fundamental particle that was discovered. In addition, everything we do in the 21st century depends on our understanding on the properties of electrons.
ok can anyone answer this question for me, since I am not a typical science know it al. How can they just shoot electrons only thru any experiment, when I thought electrons are part of the atom, and atoms can not be torn apart into seperate particles? Do we have the technology now to suck away just the electrons from the atom and shoot them thru a beam like this experiment is suggesting.
As far as I know, an electron has no known components & thus it is generally thought to be an elementry particle. The fact that all physical things are made of tiny particles (physical properties) is just simply fascinating. -Nizar Pundaodaya (Chem 1.1 XE)
J.J. Thomson's discovery is easier to understand with visuals. Thanks to Dr. Cox for this! Side note: The old particle accelerator looks like a bong. -Joshua Caleb Roa, XE
i have watched this own video of jj thomson first on this site,,,thanks a lot youtube,,,hope to get these types of videos,,,like of e.goldstein, rutherford,,neils bohr
Actually, with this experiment, Thompson was able to determine the charge/mass ratio of the electron. Later, Millikan measured the electron charge with his oil dropplets experiment, and therefore the mass of the electron was determined. At least, that's what I learned. Great video anyways :)
1XAPAZ: Now this video documentary very explanatory on how the "Electron" was discovered and which is apparently the first subatomic particle ever discovered. this opens a lot of possibilities of a lot more particles found in the earthland
