  • Dan Raza, Jason McNiff and Pepe Belmonte share one common interest if nothing else; the craft of songwriting. Perhaps in its ‘classic’ form, and even more nuanced that of the country/ folk/ American songwriting tradition. This is not to say that their musical interests start and end with this genre but from the outset with Belmonte’s ‘Open Water’ we are immediately introduced to a melodic Americana flavour. This homage continues with Raza’s rendition of his swaying number ‘In My Own Time’ and Mcniff’s positively nostalgic ‘Midnight Shift’. It was recorded on the 6th March 2020 to a small invited audience at The Jenny Lind Pub in the heart of Hastings. A pub whose reputation for hosting live music was second to none and whose survival is greatly under threat today like so many other businesses. It was an intimate and familial gig the energy of which is succinctly caught in the album cover taken just minutes after the show finished. The album is a live ‘off the cuff’ acoustic guitar record where three established singer/ songwriters are giving something of themselves to an appreciative audience. The songs vary in their content to include hope, reverie, death, loss, love. Three distinct styles and deliveries searching and ultimately finding a union in the sum of its musical parts. Just 10 days after the performance the UK would enter a long and weary lockdown. This live afternoon show would be one of the last many of us would be able and willing to attend for the quite some time…
