i get an error telling me windows shutdown inproperly and that I need to restart windows to restart the installation, i press restart and it launches me into Steam OS, so I try to re boot the external SSD from boot manager again after powering off my Steam Deck, and it gives me the same error. I don't understand.
That’s because USB keys generally (99% of the time) use a different tier of flash and have very poor random read and write performance which makes a system feel like it’s running from a sluggish hard drive if you boot from the USB key. I have this same thing happen when I boot a top tier gaming desktop from a USB key
a quick reply if possible thanks, Is it better to install windows on an external ssd or a micro sd on the steam deck? (I mean for the speed of response of the system)
Looks great, what happens if you launch the steam deck normally by pressing the power button? Will it always launch steamos, regardless of whether the ssd is attached or not?
Hi mate. I was thinking to use this method to boot windows on my steam deck. Any stability issue with this? Should i be concern about bricking my deck?
It isn't working for me -- "The free/trial version doesn't support installing/cloning Windows to a Thunderbolt hard drive" I don't know what it's talking about, it's just an nvme m.2 ssd
I got it working but I had to install it through another device *through* the same dock. Something about passing through the dock made it think it was thunderbolt
@@relicthephilosopher1751 Oh, that's wild... I'm setting up mine straight through the computer's motherboard. Maybe I could try something like that, as you did.
Windows 11 for the deck windows 11 is a terrible Desktop OS, but for a handheld device like this its great, for some reason Microsoft designed windows 11 with touchscreens in mind
Thank you, worked for me! The 7.0 version of WinToUSB also allows you to clone Windows if you want all your files/programs ready to go :)
Hello, is Windows lagging on the external drive?
@@brenukkyyuukary3215 No
This is what I was looking for. Now I don't need a laptop, I just need this and an external monitor.
Install went perfectly but i still dont have audio and Wifi. What could be the problem? using steamdeck oled
The drivers aren’t released for steamdeck oled yet

Hi,
Sorry for the question, but steamos is on internal ssd or in dual boot with window on the external ssd?
Thanks
Can i install windows only in a partition of the ssd?
Is there any way to partition the external storage after install? i bought a 2tb drive and want to reserve half of it for an exfat drive
What’s the general performance of this please? I installed windows on a USB key and it runs very sluggishly.

So if i just want to stop using windows i just have to unplug my ssd ?
Yes
When installing windows which partition did you select ?

do NOT install windows on sd
If you do it on the SD, your SD Card will die pretty fast
@@husiowo the post is pretty old now, we know by now
Is there a way to put windows on a external ssd without wiping the ssd?
no
Can someone tell me the exact product and even maybe give me a link to purchase of the USB SSD in 0:38 ?
It's a UGreen enclosure. I however don't recommend this. Even though it has a good NVMe bridge chip, it doesn't have a good thermal performance.
Hi its possible to use hdd external ?
Yes but slow
If you install games on that Windows drive, will they run fine ?
Yeah but they might be a bit laggier than on steam os most games will still work fine
Just used this guide and it worked like a charm! Thanks so much. I wonder if I’ll be asked by Windows for a license key though…

This was very helpful. Thank you!

I used 3.2 pandrive
It worked, thanks!

Hi! You suggest to install w10 or w11? Some weeks ago I tried w11 but I’ve to say that it was very bad!

11 is a terrible desktop.
Windows 11 sucks on my laptop, but seems to work better on the deck than Windows 10. Wi-Fi gets a better connection with Windows 11 on my deck.
thanks for the tutorial, but its hard to follow when you try and rush through the process. maybe slow down a little
No, please go faster next time, and please use faster music, I have things to do.
