- This is a capture of me playing the Balloon Battle Mode in Mario Kart DS for the DS. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my New 3DS XL using the aftermarket capture kit manufactured by Katsukity and installed/sold by Merki.
I think I purchased Mario Kart DS around its release date in November of 2005, although I may have received it about a month later for Christmas. This was actually the first console/handheld game that I played online, so that was a big deal for me. I was living in an apartment near my university at the time, and I was able to use someone else's unsecured wireless internet to do some online races here and there. Although I enjoyed the online mode, it didn't include the battle mode, had a limited track selection, and was completely broken by the stupid snaking exploit.
But aside from the limited/broken online, I enjoyed Mario Kart DS quite a bit. Although the graphics weren't all that great (aside from the frame rate, I found them less impressive than Mario Kart 64), the content was excellent. Mario Kart DS had great handling and course designs, as well as an amazing battle mode. For the first time ever, I was able to play battle mode by myself against the AI on numerous courses including my favorite: Block Fort. Mario Kart DS also arguably started the current tradition of including retro course grand prix cups (although Mario Kart: Super Circuit also did this, it only included the past courses from one game: Super Mario Kart).
In this video I played the Balloon Battle Mode against the AI on all six battle courses back-to-back. This is one of my favorite features in this game. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to play the Mario Kart battle modes against the AI, but it took until this game for Nintendo to implement AI opponents.
The battle mode generally has some excellent courses, but for some reason, Nintendo forced you to inflate your balloons each time by using either the select button or blowing into the microphone, which leaves you vulnerable at the start.
Rather than implement teams, I prefer to play by myself and see if I can be the last man standing. On Block Fort in particular, I like to barricade the ramps up to the third level and rain down death from above.
Recorded with OBS Studio at 60 frames per second. I'm using a New 3DS XL.
*the memories...*
