On asymmetrical balls, flare is equivalent between 2.75 and 6.5". Because of the built in intermediate they innately transition quicker. Having the lowest VAL angle of the 3 is also an important factor in speeding it up. The layout is designed to clear the fronts and afford control at the breakpoint.

Thanks for this. I had no idea symmetrical vs asymmetrical was so important for drilling bowling balls. I guess once I find out my tilt, i'll have a better chance at achieving a desired shape from my future bowling balls; but now, I have no idea what to expect when I see balls with certain layouts in other videos that aren't by Motiv...

Very well-balanced reaction comparisons. The Best so far!

Also, shouldn't having the lowest VAL angle create a sharper move down lane, not a controllable one. I'm sorry about all of these questions, I just wanna have a clue of what i'm doing when I layout my next ball. I really appreciate all of the input.

The difference in pin to PAP doesn't change flare, but how the ball manages tilt. Shorter distances retain tilt, longer measurements burn it. I'm a low tilt player, so retaining tilt is what helps it go so straight in the front of the lane. Symmetrical balls have max flare at 3 3/8, diminishing both closer and farther from PAP. On syms longer pin to PAP retains tilt, shorter pin to PAP burn tilt.

Axis rotation is more importand than anything. Does your ball speed match your rev rate ? Productive revs produce bigger transition than anything. Your ball must face up in the right direction. It seems that ThatsJoeDirt knows the proshop game very well and has some very good points but just wanted to put my two cents in. Hope that this helps.

In this video, I don't understand how layout #1 is the straightest of the three. That layout should actually be the strongest of the three, like in the Primal Rage video. Is this a mistake? Can someone help me understand this? Justin??

Okay, i'm obviously wrong, but I still don't quite understand. My thinking is that, regardless of whether or not the core is symmetrical, having the pin at 3.75' should make the ball flare more and hook somewhat earlier, thus creating a larger hook zone than having the pin at 5' or 5.5'. You're saying that is incorrect or that it doesn't apply to asymmetrical cores? Why? Does it create too much flare causing a shorter hook zone or?

I am very confused. First, I understand that the angles play an important factor too, but in terms of pin placement, is "my thinking" from my last post at least appropriate for symmetrical balls or is it just flat wrong for both? Second, I now have no clue how to go about drilling my next asymmetrical piece. If 2.75 to 6.5 is equivalent, that renders pin distance irrelevant between those numbers. Does this mean the angles are all that's important unless you use a 2" pin??

@S15D I just have a quick question for ya if you don't mind, you seem to know a lot about motiv. So obviously the cruel intent is for heavier oil which has me wondering if its ideal for a mid to high speed/rev bowler like myself to drill this ball pin up with a flare hole? I want this ball for 1 of my leagues that seems to always have heavyyyy oil lane conditions that I struggle on in the first game.

This ball is Asymmetrical, the Rage is symmetrical and they behave completely differently. This layout on the intent will have the shortest hook zone of the three. No mistake, just the balls doing what they are drilled to do. Most people that have not found success with asymmetrical balls are using far too small angle sums and drilling angles.

Brunswick gold crowns in an AMF center...
Incredible ball, but how about showing more than just a cranker?

Back in the early 1970s, it was commonplace in the Metro Detroit area to go into an AMF built house, and see Brunswick crown pins. For some reason, I have always scored higher with the crowns than the stripes. It would be an interesting combination if AMF and Brunswick ever merge together.
