I have been a woodworker and hand tool enthusiast for almost 20 years, and still the precision with which some people handle a hatchet is astonishing to me. I’ve always seen a hatchet as being good for only the crudest of work but clearly this is not the case. Looks like I have a lot of practice ahead of me.
Thanks:)
@@CareyOnVagabond Do you also have the link to the hatchet? Thanks.
@ Fadir Tools in Ukraine
Yes on a NEW carving channel!!
AND YES to a NEW Spoon Carving channel as well!! I hardly any TV!! RUclips gets my attention for the most part!! Nite-Nite!!
Yes you should start a channel for carving. I’m just starting to carve and love watching different carvers. Please include the types of wood you use and where you source your wood from. Carey on Carving.
Amazing and beautiful…and really that’s what they did back in the days of old. I like how Dave keeps a good edge on the blades of his tools! Awesome!
Thank you! A good leather strop with polishing compound is invaluable for keeping knives hair popping sharp;)
A separate carving channel would be LOVELY!
I love videos with no narration and just the sound of the work. Very soothing. There's a series on youtube of a man building a log cabin in the woods, no power tools, with just the sounds of the hand tools. Highly recommend!
Thanks!
WOW, I`m in awe at this guys Talent. There`s so much precision with the axe its unbelievable , and his carving skills with the hook knife and sloyd are also outstanding and not any leather protection in sight , that's scary stuff. I was greatly impressed by his finishing without using sandpaper also . Now that`s what I consider pure Skill at what he does.
@@tommytitmouse Thanks! I’ve made a few more spoon carving videos in the past few months that are on this channel. You can also check out my Instagram @careycarving. Cheers!
@@CareyOnVagabond thanks for telling me I`ll check them out. 👍🏻
So relaxing to watch. So amazed at how precise you are with the axe! Love the wood grain. Thanks for showing this craft😀👍
Thank you so much🙏❤️
Your “salt sprinkle” took me right out of my relaxed state! Glad to see it. You’re Keeping people on their toes! Love it!
YES, YES, YES! A separate woodcarving channel! Love this!
🙏❤️
@@CareyOnVagabond Yes! More spoons!
Really enjoyed that video. I’ve been wanting to see more of Dave’s carving skills! Also loved the way you filmed it as well. The timing and angles of the clips really worked well. Nice job guys!
Thank you!🙏❤️
A wooden spoon is something we probably all take forgranted, until we saw just how much work goes into making one.
Beautiful work, Dave!
Thank you🙏❤️
As someone who does leathercraft, seeing the wood slicker used to burnish a freshly carved spoon is pretty cool.
Thanks:)
Hi guys! I support a separate woodcarving channel. This was both relaxing and educational at the same time. I once got a job at a tactical chair factory because I said I had a fetish for trees (you know me hehe) I seriously need a new hobby, so I like this 100%
Thanks Morten😁
Very awesome!! Love to see the process that goes into Dave's carvings! Yes, would love to see more videos and/or a separate channel. Good videoing also. Great job Careys! 😊🌟✌
Thank you 🙌😁
I carve too. Usually realistic fish and caricature cowboys. I have done some spoons too. Very nice job! One tip, Wear a kevlar Carving glove. It looks like a fish cleaning glove. I know I have a permanent 90 degree bend in my forefinger after 3 surgeries trying to straighten it after pushing a knife to the bone when it slipped. Thanks for sharing.
Very sensible - but the guy looks like he knows what he's doing?
@@edwinmason123 I know what I am doing too. I have been carving for over 30 yrs. It does take reminders, because you get too comfortable with sharp knives, you forget safety. It is a professional courtesy to remind him. I am sure he appreciates it and does not take offense. Have a great day!
👍👍@@toddramsay977
Definitely would like to see another carving channel.
Be well & stay safe!
Craftsmanship at his best. Well maintained tools produce great works.
Thanks 👍
Blimmin' lovely. What a good looking spoon and a great setting to carry out the craft.
Nice work! Thanks.
Love the carving videos! I like it as part of your regular Chanel, It adds great variety
Thanks!
Beautiful work. I can say though I would not want to be camping near someone with this campground hobby.
I loved it! Dave made it look easy, but I’m sure it takes a lot of practice.
Thanks! And I manage to keep all my fingers intact!😉😁
@@CareyOnVagabond Don't get bloody - cut toward your buddy!
Yes would definitely watch more of these videos, very therapeutic! Amazing skills with the use of that hatchet.
Thanks ☺️
I use the little pointed scoop you made every day. I often turn it over to admire the beautiful lines. After watching this, I love it even more.
So nice to hear this🙏❤️
TÜRKİYE 'den selamlar.Ellerinize sağlık çok güzel bir çalışma yaptınız.
Hello to Turkey! Thanks! I have a good friend in Istanbul. Have never been there but would like to visit someday. Cheers!
I’m totally in for more woodcarving installments. I do a bit myself so it’s always interesting to see how other people work.
You’re giving me axe envy. I did pick up a knock-off on Amazon and it was fun putting down an edge.
Maybe we’ll see you out there, we have a van too. Happy trails to all 3 of you. Love your content.
Thanks! If you ever see us getting close to where you are let us know!😉
@@CareyOnVagabond We are staying in the northeast this summer: lots of Maine, maybe Nova Scotia. I’ll keep my eyes out for you.
Tell Dave I got a Kalthoff axe on order and it’s his fault. 😆
@@mosswinkle3015 We may be up there this summer too. I am very jealous! Beautiful axes. I follow them on IG;

The saw dust sprinkle at the end was a nice touch!

Nice to see 👀 how Dave creates his spoons.😀 Thanks for sharing.🙏

Wow ! You make it look so easy
OMG Dave, I probably would have lost my fingers in doing that carving. Nice piece of work. Take care.
Thanks Ron:)
That was really neat. Hubby says he would definitely watch more carving videos. I just like to watch anything you guys are doing, especially Pistol. Thanks & travel safe
Thanks!
I will be getting a small starter carving set, thanks to you! Can't wait to start. So yes a channel on wood carving would be great!!!
The mora knives are fairly inexpensive and work awesome. We have amazon links on our website site and in this videos description! Happy carving!
I could watch you carving for hours. Thanks for sharing and Hi from Wales UK
Thank you! I will do some more. I started a careycarving page on Instagram. I plan on posting some short videos there soon.
Good morning and cheers (clinks coffee cups) ;-) Super cool video of Dave in action making his artistic creation! Thank you! Carey on....

Wow Dave is so talented and that spoon is perfect 👍🏻.
Thank you 🙏❤️
So even though Pistol looked like she thought it was kind of boring I LOVED IT! Great tools, perfect safety and the benefit of fire starters too! And it’s good to see you live by the Abe Lincoln famous statement… sharp tools! What a great hobby for the road. Hope you three are well. See you soon we hope. Owen, Lynn and Maggie
Thanks guys! We will be in and around Florida all winter so maybe we’ll bump into each other;)
No sandpaper. I love it.
beautiful sculpture!
Highly skilled with the axe work ,and perfect bowl shape ,I will get there with practice 😀
Thanks!
We do enjoy watching your skilled craftsmanship creating wood kitchen utensils and including that in your weekly videos.
Thanks Roger. I will work on a special spoon designed specifically for eating scones😉
@@CareyOnVagabond yay!👍
Applesauce blueberry scones in a pie pan. Perfect for one of your spoons.
Thanks for showing so much of the process in real time! Great video.
Thanks. I hope to do another carving video soon:)
Loved the video! Beautiful work.
Thank you!🙏❤️
Simply lovely!
You're very accurate with the hatchet.
Thanks!
You’re a LOT more sure-handed with that hatchet than I’d be 😳 Loved seeing the final version of the bigger scoop, fantastic work!
Thanks Joe!
Just look at those shiny facets on that axe!!! Yer a sick puppy Dave! 😂😂 ~ Jeremy aka Whittlestix.😉
Thank you😁
Good job👏👏👍
Thanks!
I could relax when watching this video, great woodworking, thanks!

Nice. Enjoyed watching the process. Great it is a craft that can go with you. Beautiful. I’d watch a carving channel. The work table is great also.

Great work. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
This is the first video of yours I've seen. Excellent work by axe and knife, and from behind the camera! Subscribed.
Thanks! I’ll do another carving video soon:)
I too would like a detailed carving site for beginners. Thank you.
Very Cool thanks for sharing, safe travels
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing a great video! Your spoon is perfect...😁I recently started wood carving. Your skilled work is very helpful for me to carve a better one.
Awesome! Thank you!
Absolutely loved it
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. I would love to see more of this type of video. Just awesome!
Thank you!
That was great to watch Dave! Thanks for sharing your carving workmanship!
Thanks Cheryl 🙏❤️
The carving looks really enjoyable and therapeutic. I used to do some of it myself when I was in the Boy Scouts but I just called it "whittlin'". LOL I did wonder why you didn't spread a tarp so that you could easily catch all of those scraps that I have to think would make great tinder for future campfires!
Thanks;). I used to bag some up but I make way more than I can ever use!🤣
Terribly impressive skill set you have developed 🥇🎨 🎯
Thank you ☺️
Great video thank you! I found it very relaxing.
Glad you liked it!
I really enjoyed this. Fascinating to see a block of wood crafted into something beautiful. Would like more videos like this whether they are on this channel or a separate one, I will watch. Thanks.
Thanks Deb!
That was an amazing video! What a talent!
Thank you so much!🙏
So cool Dave! Love the grain / design in the finished spoon! Great job 🥰
Thanks!
Great video, perfect setting very enjoyable thank you!
love your craft. which hatchet is it? it looks so beautifull.
It’s the wayfarer small carving axe from Fadir Forge in Ukraine.
Absolutely stunning
Thanks!
Beautifully done
Thank you!
Wonderful video, yes do more!
Thanks!
Beautiful spoons.👍
Thank you☺️
Oh my...that is absolutely beautiful! And the oiled wood tones are stunning. Loved the video...held my breath a couple of times as the ax came close to the line but it was perfect.
Even if I screw up with the axe I just change the spoon shape.😉😁
GREAT. Previous comments are my own... bummer, wish to provide comments/observations ... but others already did so. Am a beginner and watch lots of videos. Saw your leather chest pad, hand position, tools (most I've purchased from Ukraine and some on Amz. Looking forward to our camping trips with tools. 😃 Ennjoyed your sharing, and I learned while I watched. thanks much r
Glad you enjoyed it!
So great to find you... I'm a carver, and I have a second (neglected) channel that used to be called Girl Gone Vagabond! (now Girl Gone to Ground) Nice spoon, nice rig, cute dog... thanks for filming!
I'll check it out!
Fascinating! The videography and editing are superb! You don’t charge enough for your spoons. The precision with super sharp tools is amazing. I love the variety on this channel - no need for another.
Thank you Joe. I really appreciate that!
Beautiful work... like it a lot. 😍
Thank you ☺️
This is wonderful!
Second one has some beautiful grain
Very cool and yes, we would watch more videos like that. I've been thinking about getting back into carving as a hobby to do while traveling that doesn't take up much space myself.
It’s a great hobby for people who have little space but need a creative outlet like I did;)
Love everything about this…thank you!
🙏❤️
I really appreciate this video because I've been trying to figure out how to make Wooden Spoons without any tools and everybody makes it look really really difficult but this video tutorial was actually pretty easy I think I'm going to give it a shot for myself
Glad it helped. Reach out if you need any tips. So much little things. Tools, sharpening, wood, etc. check out my Instagram @careycarving. The only reason i started Instagram was to learn from other carvers there. So much info there.
@@CareyOnVagabond thank you so much I appreciate this
Very nice! Travel safe!
Thanks!
Wow, beautiful work Dave. I didn’t know carving could finish a piece so nicely. The sharpest tools provide you with a springboard to your imagination. Also I can see that your concentration is like meditation. ☮️
Thanks John. Yes, sometimes I get lost in time carving:)
Dave, you got me started carving spoons as you know. My wife wants me to keep them I sanded as you do, but I can’t help myself. I just did a dish out of sugar maple and the finish was like glass. YES start a channel, as I am a big fan of yours. I split a piece of maple and did a spoon (I called it a spoonchala). Spoon and spatula. And the serving dish. You keep me inspired. David and Juanita aka Grey Goose Adventures… btw, we live a mile south of Marineland near Flagler Beach.
Some wood is just meant to be sanded;) I’ve sanded some Mesquite and it is amazing and won’t fuzz up when wet like others will when sanded. We know Flagler beach well. We’ll be in Florida quite a bit this winter so maybe we’ll see you around!;)
@@CareyOnVagabond we can do dinner one night we would love to meet you guys in person. I want to see some of your finished spoons
Really nice work
Thank you:)
Nice work!
Thanks!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching that on this dismal December morning. Why not do a carving channel ? What wood did you use for those two spoons; lovely grain?
That was cool. I could use a lesson on knife sharpening.
Thanks! Sharpening has been more challenging than the carving!😉😁
Absolutely! I find it very relaxing and satisfying to watch Dave carve beautiful spoons. We have enjoyed our spoons immensely, keeping them oiled with food safe oil such as hemp seed or flax..keep up the great work Dave! Have you thought about doing salad tossing utensils or "spurtles?" (They're good for scraping a bowl or scooping out mayo, peanut butter, etc.) 💕
Thanks Melanie! I have carved a few spurtles but need to carve more!
@@CareyOnVagabond I need to check out your store! 💕 Give Pistol a kiss for me! Happy Thanksgiving!
@@melaniecarlisle4771 Will do! I should have some spoons up in a few weeks. We’ll announce before we do;)
Beautiful spoon! What wood is that?
As for a separate channel, I like the variety you share on your main channel. Some carving videos would enhance the variety. You'd also be reaching some audience that may otherwise not find your beautiful work.
What hatchet and tools are you using?
It’s apple wood from Oregon. I use a variety of tools, some hand forged but the mora knives and beaver craft listed in the description with amazon links are awesome and inexpensive. I think the beaver craft is my cheapest knife and used the most. The most expensive thing is my hand forged carving axe from the Ukraine made of ball bearing steel. It’s by Woodsmans Finest.
