  • Beijing sanctions three American defence companies as Taiwan's new president takes office. China is also launching an anti-dumping investigation into imported EU, US, Japan and Taiwan chemicals amid a growing trade spat. The country's struggling property market gets a government lifeline, but investors remain unconvinced that it will be enough.

Correction: These sanctions weren't for "the west". They were for the US.
Also, China never sold EVs in the US so US' tariffs on Chinese EVs just for the purpose of appearing tough to make their right wing populace happy doesn't affect China at all, because China never sold to the US market in the first place and the world is far bigger than the US anyway.

    • @lianghao7128

Should China sanction the US dollar? China is the largest trading partner of 130 countries, why should China continue to accept the US dollar? In fact, China only needs to impose a 1% tariff on the US dollar, while other currencies are exempt from that taxes, which is enough to make the world to switch trade currencies. Don't take China's goodwill as your own strength.

I believe this is good news for the West. China is simply expediting the total decoupling of the Western economy from China. They initiated this process with BRICS and through the promotion of a multipolar world. However, "multipolar" in this context refers to a grouping of nations aligned with China, Russia, and Iran, opposed to another bloc consisting of the US, EU, and Japan. Contrary to the belief that multipolarity entails an equitable, open world fostering trade and collaboration, the reality may be the opposite. It could result in a divided world, with a Western economy on one side, similar to the current setup, and a BRICS economy on the other.
Unfortunately, smaller nations will be compelled to choose sides. Nations like the US will not lose leverage; rather, they will gain more. China and Russia will wield significant leverage over the nations aligning with them. The Western bloc will maintain an advantage, given its position as the incumbent global economic system, while BRICS nations will face challenges that need urgent resolution. Many BRICS nations lack mature domestic consumer economies capable of sustaining their own economic needs, let alone supporting the group as a whole. Consequently, the people of these countries will endure significant hardships.
In due course, the West may form a new bloc that excludes BRICS nations, tightening market access and intensifying collaboration with non-BRICS nations.
Investment in China by companies based abroad has plummeted to its lowest level in 30 years. According to the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, China's foreign direct investment amounted to $33 billion on a net basis in 2023, marking an approximate 80% decrease from 2022. This decline occurred even before China faced sanctions in response to its involvement in Ukraine and its attempts to impose sanctions on American companies.
There is no turning back. A total decoupling with the Chinese economy is coming and by extension with all BRICS member nations.
