I was a dancer for 10 years, beginning at the age of six. My dad was my best friend and his belief in me was one of the greatest things I've ever known. Nobody motivated me or made me feel as beautiful on a stage as he did. In 2008, my dad fell ill to pancreatic cancer. He battled that for four years, then it was skin cancer in 2012, and then a diagnosis of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder shortly after. After so many rounds of radiation, years of surgeries, endoscopies, laboratory tests, and so many other procedures, he left this Earth on August 2nd of 2014, despite being declared "free" of cancer around Christmas time of 2013. I finished competing for the season that summer, I signed to perform for my high school's drill and dance competition team, and he died 3 weeks before I began a new chapter within my dancing career. My heart no longer felt as if it belonged on a stage. I felt alone, and no matter how packed the audience was when I performed, it still felt so empty without him. I officially quit dancing a little more than a year later. Whether I performed in pointe shoes, or barefoot to lyrical pieces, or in high tops to adrenaline-pumping hip-hop routines, or wearing *my all time favorite tap shoes, it wasn't the same without him. 6 years later, at 21 years old, I've caught myself dancing. Happily dancing. Songs like this make me break out in choreographed sequences I've memorized and known practically my entire life. The consequences that came with battling cancer may have taken my dad, but it doesn't have to take my passion towards dance. I thought for so many years that it did, but I was wrong.
