My favorite part of the build is the assault pencil. 😀 Nice design, cheap, effective, and scaleable. Probably going to build a larger one once I start paining my car panels.
Great booth Ray! I built a car sized booth back in the 90's using similar methods...only when you paint a car you need to turn over the cubic air capacity much quicker. Mine was constructed with a car sized 2×4 frame suspended from the ceiling with rope and pulleys. The perimeter of the base was also 2×4s and I used 1×2 furring strips to hold the plastic tight and seal it. Incorporated in the base were two 2×6 "boxes" one on each side of the intrance door that held ,if I remember correctly six filters each at the other end of the "booth" was another 2×6 frame that held the exhaust filters. The air was moved by a squirrel cage fan assembly from a residential HVAC system and ducted with flexible ductwork. I didn't have a floor other than concrete but I wet it down to kill any dust. I was amazed by how clean my paint jobs came out. I believe that in theory if a person had another fan blowing air into the booth creating positive pressure you would have even less dirt in your paint job... might even work with your booth with another box fan.. good luck with your painting...looking forward to the next videos. I hope my little story is of benefit to your viewers.. take care and Merry Christmas!
It has been raining about every other day here also. I built a similar booth. I used a 20 ft 8” duct piping to a squirrel cage fan to pull the spray air out.
That is built really good for using light weight lumber...I like the zipper you used to get in and out;;;...I put a fan in the side of a big cardboard box and a furnace filter on the other side and id works great when I am hand sanding small items and if I spray paint a small part I set it about a foot from the filter
You need at least 50 ft of 3/4 copper pipe also about 50 ft of 3/4 copper tubing inside of a freezer Locker to get any water or moisture out of any air compressor if you going to paint any automobiles
Great booth Ray. Good time of year for this. I'd like to have one for sure. I have a shih tzu that would break in though. LOL Probably have to chicken wire it.
nice job! thanks for sharing! keep fighting for your rights to own the assault pencil, crazy to hear what laws have passed in California, background checks for ammo? have a merry Christmas
Nice. A few questions: Did the wife approve of the 24 yr old female assistant? Do the filters delete any fumes, or is it mostly for dust, and some smell? (Wondering if we have to bring in outside air and get rid of the old air or after filtering can it be recycled?) Is it necessary to switch out the face filters each time we spray? Thanks!
Since that is our Daughter I'm sure the wife approves! These filters only filter dust and paint particles only and very little fumes. These are inexpensive filters so you can change them out frequently. Fresh air is brought in from the fan and old air out the other filter.
Ray -- I didn't see you use the assault pencil -- I goggle it , and all I got was some bullsit about the second amendment . I want to know what the assault pencil can mark. What are it's advantages as a marking pencil.
This is nuts -- it looks like i'm out of touch with reality , I make stuff , I don't kill people . I can't relate.to an assulte pencil , I come from a different time zone . P.S. can I borrow your paint booth , I need a summer cottage . @@RaysGarage
I got a fan blade is 4 ft by 4 ft also a 15 horse gasoline engine really turns that fan blade at high RPMs about 40000rpm a fan blade like that HAS GOT to be in a good steel frame also exhaust smoke from any gasoline engine has got to be clear of any human beings
THAT really was intelligent building your own paint booth only fresh air is supposed to come in from the top and out the floor of any real paint booth are you will have real problems painting any automobiles also breathing any fresh clean Air
Hey Ray, You do have a potential safety / liability issue if someone decides to blame you if they misuse this design and they don't ventilate it properly. It *should* be clear that this setup is strictly for light and intermittent use only... but, there's always the 10% who don't get it... We don't typically size enclosures by airchanges anymore, but the idea is valid for keeping the oxygen levels in limits - the cartridge respirator which they need to be using cannot provide oxygen after all... These days, the simplest design situation has fresh air moving past the person towards the work at 100 feet per minute - properly setup and used, that's like a laboratory fume hood or a workbooth..However, such a setup is not always practical. The old rule of thumb for enclosed spaces was 6 airchanges per hour. That's generally adequate for minor exposures, such as a few minutes with a rattlecan, followed by a break to let things air out. And, when everything is in alignment, there is a safety margin built in... but, it is not absolutely assured in all situations. Take your cube at 8' on a side - that's 512 cubic feet. At 6 airchanges per hour, you would turn over that volume every 10 minutes, for 512/10 = 51.2 cfm If you box fan is moving that much air, great! If it's a $20 cheapy that only moves 20 cfm, the booth could be under-ventilated, and the user needs to beware. They are probably reasonably safe working in such a booth while properly wearing an appropriate respirator, but they need to be careful to limit their time in the booth.
Besides, to get a spray GUN there's a 10 day waiting period, and you have to register that spray WEAPON with the Cal DOJ, and buy it through a licensed spray GUN dealer.
A real paint booth Paul's real fresh air in from the top and OUT the floor but that is intelligent making your own paint booth

Hello Jeff, Thanks for sharing, sounds like a very nice booth you built! Merry Christmas!
It has been raining about every other day here also. I built a similar booth. I used a 20 ft 8” duct piping to a squirrel cage fan to pull the spray air out.
I have always wanted to build a paint booth😀 nice job

Nice setup. Ready to go. Merry Christmas
Thanks Randy, Merry Christmas!!!
Also doubles as a planting greenhouse in the spring. See you at the Bar-Z. Jon
THANK YOU...for sharing. Great idea.
A must have for perfect paint jobs!
Cool booth. Sure will save the mess.
Excellent video, great info and good organization.
Many Thanks!
Amazing, I am building one now. Just don’t have much space in garage…so I’m engineering a way to make my booth foldable!
Great idea, that should work out great!
You need at least 50 ft of 3/4 copper pipe also about 50 ft of 3/4 copper tubing inside of a freezer Locker to get any water or moisture out of any air compressor if you going to paint any automobiles
Attic fans turn a lot of RPMs is best for any paint booth or squirrel fans but REALLY has got to turn a lot of RPMs REALLY fast RPMs
I'm sharing this video brother. Thanks.
Thanks Brother, It's working great and loving the paint finish results! I should have done this a long time ago!!!
Good job Ray i like the assault pencil :)
Thanks Roger, Let's hope I never need to use it! Thanks for swinging by, Merry Christmas!
Hey BigRay
Rock N Roll, good video
Good video
Glad you enjoyed!
Should have used pink spray paint. 🥰I built a similar setup to paint a tractor once.
I may just have to whip up something pink for Brad!!! Thanks for swinging by Brian!
Great booth Ray. Good time of year for this. I'd like to have one for sure. I have a shih tzu that would break in though. LOL Probably have to chicken wire it.
Hahaha, we have one too and the Rotti, both are being pretty good in the shop!
Looking good, I'm jealous of the space.
America, the land of the free, provided you don't have a spray gun.🤣
Nice job!
Thanks Craig!
nice job!
thanks for sharing!
keep fighting for your rights to own the assault pencil, crazy to hear what laws have passed in California, background checks for ammo? have a merry Christmas
That's for sure Scott, I will continue to fight the good fight! Merry Christmas!!!

It's a standard #2 pencil and a dig to the outrageous gun laws in Ca!

Maybe an alternate title would be "Rattlecan Specialist Does It Right" or Masked Marauder Sprays Up the Place.....or....

Does the fan sit on the outside of the filter?
Yes sir, pulls paint fumes and overspray thru the filter and out.

He clearly stated that the booth is for light use and temporary. This is a great base for anyone looking to build a booth for projects.
Seems like a lot of people lately are building spray booths.
I sure because of the bad weather and crappy paint results! This booth is working great and i'm getting a really nice paint finish!
all that for a rattle can!!
Yes, the results are so much better! I would love to use a spray gun but it's not legal here in Ca. without the proper emission equipment.
Besides, to get a spray GUN there's a 10 day waiting period, and you have to register that spray WEAPON with the Cal DOJ, and buy it through a licensed spray GUN dealer.
Your paint booth filters are not exactly the way it should be YOU should have air filters all the way across the top of your paint booth
