One of the big things I would change in The Walking Dead is when Carl Grimes dies. When Carl Grimes left the show I believe it was the catalyst for other major plot changes such as when Rick Grimes and Michonne left only to return in the ending of The Walking Dead season 11 and now, the build up of the Rick and Michonne show. So, what if Carl Grimes survived? In this video I breakdown the entire story from the moment Carl Grimes left the show to the ending in season 11 where Rick Grimes returned. I also talk about how Daryl and Rick Grimes will inevitably reunite and if Carl was still alive, he could've too. It all started when Morgan Jones crossed over to Fear The Walking Dead. This is what I think would happen if Carl Grimes lived.

In a perfect world we'd get this. Man, so disappointed in the show that they killed Carl off. I lost so much interest after that episode I just couldn't believe it.

This broke the show for me, mainly because Carl WAS supposed to be the man to carry on after Rick's passing, and he symbolized the hope for the future, idc what the show writers or even Chandler Riggs say, they shouldn't have killed Carl.

Imagine the Season 2 Episode 12 scene with Rick and Carl in the barn playing in a world where Carl didn't die on the show. How powerful it would be for him to understand the lesson his father was trying to teach him. Especially after Rick blew up the bridge, or even if AMC chose to do the comic death... it cuts to Carl as a young man recalling the memory.
"No more kid stuff. I wish you could have the childhood I had, but that's not gonna happen. People are gonna die. I'm gonna die. Mom. There's no way you can ever be ready for it. I try to be, but I can't. The best we can do now is avoid it as long as we can, keep one step ahead. I wish I had something better to say, something, something more profound. My father was good like that. But I'm tired, son. (Hold the gun out to Carl) Please take it." - Rick
An adult Carl could have had a badass look too. His fathers Sheriff hat, slick back hair like Negan, an eye patch like the Governor, Alphas ouroboros belt buckle, the red machete, etc. I'm still a diehard, day one Walking Dead Universe fan but It's painful to think of the missed creative opportunities regarding Carl.

That's awesome, and I'm with. I often binge watch the waking dead, but everytime I get to the middle of season 6 after Carl gets shot and rick takes on the hoard, I know the show is coming close to transforming Carl into a cuckold. It's Pathetic what they did to his character and painful to watch.

Also, the Morgan idea is brilliant. I remember watching the show when it first came out, afraid for Morgan because it made sense at the time for him to be killed. When Carl died it felt like I lost the show I was watching, not the character himself. Such a wild decision.
Morgan should have died. His character absolutely killed fear the walking dead.

btw, I do agree that Carl's death was one of the biggest missteps of the show. Should have never happened.
They knew that Rick needed motivation to keep Negan alive, and so Carl’s character arc and death was unfortunately pigeonholed to fit that narrative. It was a major Gimple misstep, if the many he’s made. And during the time jump, I could see Carl being more of a leader at Alexandria and allowing Negan to be out of prison briefly as a sort of work release in the garden - similar to his vision. And while agreeing with all you’ve said, I would differ on the ending and actually see Carl staying behind for Judith and RJ - especially since the rest of his family are gone, and Uncle Daryl is going off in search of Rick. Could see an ending where Carl is actually communicating via by radio, with Daryl and Carol and Maggie/ (even Morgan, who doesn’t have to die) - possibly turning radio on everyday at sunrise. And then you could have the ending monologue with Rick and Michonne, as it was. Followed by Carl, standing with Judith and RJ on the fence, saying the poetic lines of “We’re all out there looking for our family. Because we’re the ones who live.”
The fact that RJ is the main character of twd son, and we hardly see him, makes him one of the strangest characters in the show imo.
He’s pretty young. I think the idea that he’s going to be trained by Judith way later. That’s why she put the hat on him.

That wasn't a character, that was a prop or placeholder.
I don’t care what anyone says killing Carl was the dumbest decision the walking dead ever made, he would’ve carried with Daryl after rick left
No argument to be made there. Carl's death was the last nail in the coffin for the show, him being killed off was the worst decision they could have made. It's made even worse by the fact that Chandler Riggs switched colleges, bought a place closer to the film sets, and openly stated that he wanted to continue the show all for him to be fired because AMC didn't want to pay him an adult rate now that he was 18.
Daryl and Carl were an underrated pair, too. When they went through the tombs in the prison after Lori died, the two of them had pretty good screen chemistry, even when Chandler Riggs was still very much a kid.
I think it’d have been cool to see Daryl being Carls right hand as he helps him rise to his new leader position. Carl was destined to lead the group after rick.
not really. it would be the other way around. daryl is a much more experienced leader than carl. it would kinda suck for us to see carl immediately become the most powerful person in the hierarchy. it would be really cool for him to prove himself instead of becoming the leader because of his father.
@@obsidiantrap_6900 He wouldn't immediately become the highest on the hierarchy that is what character arch's are for. Carl filling the role isn't because he was the son of the last leader. Like some kind of monarchy.
But rather since his father was a leader, would inspire him strive to be one himself. Daryl would allow it to happen and continue being the right hand man, guiding him as he adapts to the role. Rather than taking that role for himself.
Not everyone wants to be a leader, there is a lot of pressure, and a lot of responsibility. Only those who are willing to rise to the position get it.
It's like Saints Row. The player character is the leader in SR2 because Johnny Gat didn't want it. He is just as qualified as the player, canonically he's slightly better than the player, and he was in the gang much longer.

Rick said in the barn before the storm on the way to Virginia that he thought it was tough for kids to grow up that way because childhood is getting use to the world. So for Carl the world would be easier to deal with as an adult then it was for the rest of the group. And Neagan said in season 8 after he blew up Alexandria that Carl was built for this shit.

Looking back on the show as a whole, I really wish they kept Merle, Tyreese, and Abraham alive to fight in the All Out War arc. THAT would have been cool to watch. And yeah, killing off Carl will forever be a mistake in my eyes no matter what anyone says. Maybe if he had lived, Andy & Danai would have stayed on longer.

People can diagree but I believe henry should still keep the lydia and whipser story while carl takes a more older brother to judith storyline. also being henry protector like daryl was, while the storyline between rick leader ship and someone of the dwight and jesus scene could be shared with Daryl and carl

@@ksyvi During season 8 he was 15 years old, when at that time Lydia was 9 years old, after a 7-year timeskip, Carl would have become 22 years old, Lydia would have 16 years old. They have a big age difference.

OMG that sounds so much better. Love Morgan but his death pushing Rick to spare Negan makes so much sense. Carl (whether you like him much or not) was the soul of the show. I don't think Carl would have saved the show but I think he'd have made it better. For me it didn't feel like there was lead after Rick, but with Carl around slowly learning to be the leader with Daryl helping him would have been awesome. Then either Enid or Lydia could have been better developed and become his love interest. And Carl, Negan, and Daryl vs Beta sounds awesome. I hated the ending of the show because how it doesn't end at all. With Carl there, coming full circle, he could have gotten a happy ending and been apart of the future like his dad wanted while still setting up everything else.
An interesting "What If" scenario
If Carl had lived, the biggest impact is that Andrew Lincoln would have carried through on his original plans and would have left the show at some point, midway into Season 8. (It was only after finding out that Carl was being killed off that Andrew changed his plans and exited the show in Season 9)
With Rick out of the picture, this would have forced some major changes.
- Daryl would likely have taken his place in the final fight with Negan.
They would have likely still needed a major character (Morgan or Carol) for Negan's life to be spared. However, Rick's disappearance/suspected death may have been used instead
In season 9 the time jumps would have been much smaller, but enough so that they could use an older girl to play Judith. With Rick having left in season 8, there would be no RJ
Carl would have taken back his Whisperer comic book story. As for pike victims, I would have had Ezekiel instead of Henry.
As for other characters being used in crossovers. There are a few characters that I thought were (very) underutilized - namely, Jesus (plus Laura, Magna, and possibly Cyndie)
It would have been amazing if the story had progressed with Carl, Edith, Lydia, Henry, etc. being the future. They remembered the world before, but truly only knew the apocalypse.
I would have loved to see how negan would’ve reacted in this timeline. I think carl would have been very important to him and he would have tried to be something like a father or at least a protective person to Carl. There could have been a very interesting story between negan and carl

Thr thing about Judith being the one to pass down the story is that she has no memory of what the world was before the end. She would never be able to give a full scope on what was lost
If you hadn't noticed they tried to make people like Judith but they failed the reason why they failed is because Carl had a decade long character development and many good moments that made him likeable for example his moments with Enid. The fact that Carl died is what destroyed season 9,10 and 11 if forget the bad writing that is (at least for me). In my humble opinion i believe that we need a remake of season 8,9,10 and 11. Even without Rick if Carl had taken his place then maybe the last few seasons wouldn't be like this.
I always liked Carl as the POV character, seeing everything through his eyes...erm eye in the comics just worked.

I would feel sad for Michonne if there was no RJ. She basically got a second chance. Because of Rick. I don’t really mind her leaving them to search for Rick. Because I know all of the communities and Gabriel is there. Also Carol is there she’s like a whole army
Her leaving honestly didn't make sense. But I understand there wasn't much they could do since she wanted to leave.
Hell, in the new show, they could’ve added RJ too and that wouldn’t of hurt my feelings because I think it was awesome that Rick got with Michonne. Especially with the bond Karl and Michonne built in the story.
Well, I honestly feel like her second chance was Carl, because he became her son, and Judith, who became her baby in a way. Then at the very, very end they could've had RJ.
I do like your alternative version, except for Henry, him dying in the pikes was more impactful because the season revolved around his storyline. And him dying basically left Lydia isolated. Death by jealousy would just make his death frustrating, what I'd do is make him either close friends with Carl, and as his friend, he and Daryl went with Carl to rescue Lydia just like Daryl and Henry did in the show, to Carol's dismay, and then as punishment, Alpha would have him in the pikes, and that would carry a lot of weight. Overall though, your alternative is very solid.
RJs actor always looks like he’s about to laugh
Carl should have never died. He was the prime example of a broken kid and physically destroyed, but still a good heart.
Carl’s death is the biggest mistake ever made by the showrunners. It would’ve been awesome seeing an older Carl take the reigns. I do think it would be better if Carl was portrayed as an up and coming leader. I still would’ve gave Henry Carl’s storyline with the Whisperers and Carl would pick up Rick’s comic storyline. I could see Carl going there to find Henry and be shown the horde instead of Daryl. Then Daryl and Carl could carry the story through season 11. Imagine Carl giving the “We Are Not The Walking Dead” speech; a complete mirror of his fathers speech in the barn.

I desperately wanted him to have an arc on par with comic Carl and AMC destroying that broke my heart. So I'm pretty sure if carl survived that means he would have went with daryl at the end of the show.that means daryl's show wouldn't be about just him in France and it would've been about daryl and carl in France making the show titled the walking dead: raise the dead staring norman reedus and chandler riggs

i just want a parallel of rick and carl reuniting from season 1 where carl all teary eyed yelling dad but this time its just quiet tears and relief on their faces finally being bought back together again.
i would have loved to see this all play out. carl's death always felt so off to me, and it was more confusing than sad because of how much they set him up to live until the end. seeing carl go through all of the things he went through just for him to die felt so meaningless and they really wasted him as a character. the writers really didnt know what to do with his character and it shows.

Don't know if it is true but I heard the reason they killed Carl was because Chandler was turning 18 and they would have had to pay him a lot more, and around that time he had expressed wanting to leave the show so he could attend college full time.
Actually Chandler said in an interview that he basically build his life around working on the show, bought a house near set and sign up for college there too. But hey, the more you know.
If a What If story of The Walking Dead showing Carl survived and become the lead from TWD's season 9 onwards came true, that would be lit
Also, the heads on pikes scene would make things more personal between Carl and Alpha and Carl would be the one to kill her

God I would’ve loved this if it happened. I even think they could’ve pulled off not killing Morgan in season 8. I watched another RUclipsr do a retrospective on The Walking Dead show, and he compared everything to the comics and talked about the parallels in astonishing depth. In the comics, Rick doesn’t need a huge death to spare Negan. He’s pretty much thinking of the greater good for humanity by doing that. Despite the differences in comic Rick and TV Rick, I think they could’ve pulled off having him spare Negan without a significant death. Rick has Judith in the show, and baby Gracie was introduced in the same season, so I wholeheartedly believe Rick could do the same exact thing for the reason of setting an example for the next generation. That way, Morgan could still go to Fear because I genuinely don’t mind it. Yeah they made dumb decisions, such as killing off Nick and both John Dories, but I love it because I love everything TWD related. I can’t help it, I grew up with the show

People getting mad at kid Carl were usually younger people, and non-parents, I found. Most older people and parents I've seen (both friends who've watched and those I've seen in reactions) seem to understand Carl better. He's a kid, he's not gonna think 'big picture', he's gonna push boundaries, and be 'rebellious', and think he's smarter/more mature/braver/stronger than he is. That's what kids do. People getting mad at an 11 year old not thinking about long term consequences severely overestimate their own 11 year old selves.

The spark for this whole series for me was the fact that Carl would survive in the end. Once they killed him off I kinda got super lost 😅 The shows today are cool but it still doesn’t feel the same.

They should have utilized Magna's group more. If Carl were still alive, I'd like him to help Maggie in the Reaper arc. Or Carl was lost in the way and he met and rescued Alicia. He would serve as the connection between FTWD and TWD.
The FTWD and TWD crossover could have happened without Morgan, FTWD could have continued the plot with Proctros, but Rosita would have been in the crossover, she comes from Mexico, and we could have been shown Rosita's meeting with Abraham and Eugene, they are from Texas.

I’m gonna read through all the comics with the purpose of seeing what Carl could’ve been. From what I’ve seen in my opinion the show got worse as it went on and the comics got better as they went on. I sure hope the spin offs are able to do all the fan service and also make a good story.
idk I think Carl's death was as good as it was bad, like a 50/50. In terms of story telling, it was a great character death (although executed pretty poorly, by that I mean the "random death", as he just suddenly got bit and that was that), but, as a viewer, I really wanted to see Carl survive longer and see him living in the post-Commonwealth world. Personally, if I was the writer, I couldn't have killed this character just because of the actor, Chandler Riggs played him so well that I would just feel so bad for that. It felt like the TWD universe lost a lot of "life" when Carl died, it made the world feel so much emptier.
Having Daryl and Carl looking for Rick would’ve been way better. Having him be the leader would’ve great to. AMC sucks

Morgan is fully aware of the plot armor. He directly says over and over again "I DON'T DIE! EVERYONE ELSE DOES" and comes pretty close to breaking the fourth wall sometimes in FTWD.

It would’ve been a better show. AMC are a bunch of idiots and evil for screwing Chandler out of his contract. Never felt the same after they killed him off
its crazy cause we lost 4 or 5 main characters in the time span of 2 seasons
i always thought it was so stupid that they had to kill him off for the point they were trying to make, they literally couldve just made it seem like carl died, during a walker attack or he couldve been abandoned left for dead, they definitely shouldnt have killed him off

I would have Rather they recast the Character rather than killing him off everybody would have rather that but Nope Scott Gimple thought “My mercy prevails over my Wrath” was something to look forward to, Rick and Carl Gone from the Show just made it Feel empty at least if Carl was still there that Void would have been Filled.

I think Carl should have survived, he was just starting to become what could have been a good leader, how it would have played out with Negan we will never know would he have spared him again we will never know as he was taken too early, I loved Carl and think he should have been there to the end ❤❤
To be honest I would've much more preferred if Rick died instead.
Rick always looked out for his son. When his wife died he went crazy for a while, when Carl got shot, Rick went full berserk.
But when Carl died Rick was able to move on?
I excepted him to never fully recover from this.

Even more traumatic if Rick turns out to be an immortal variant that revives since he was in coma with out fluids for a long time in that hospital even after the nurse was killed in webisode , It would mean Carl either blew his brains out and died being immune or blew his brains out and revived in his coffin with half a head scratching the Lid while repeating the word lidi lydi lidi lydi.
