  • After my first couple of rides on the project BMW R100CS, lets take a closer look at some of the areas that could do with being fixed up first.

    As I’d mentioned in a previous vid, my R100s was completely restored. The original owner bought it in Germany, rode it around Europe for about 12 months. He then shipped it back to Perth, Western Australia, where he had it for many more years. The guy I bought it from, which turned out to be a good mate, unknown prior to purchase.🤪 When Daryl bought it, the bike was burgundy. He had it resprayed exactly in the colour scheme you’re going for!👍🏼 It looks stunning in the gold with black pin striping! Great vid again. 🇦🇺😎

      Thanks Andrew. Can't wait to get the bike painted back to her former glory. Glad to hear it looks great in person. I;ve only ever seen photos of the original scheme.

    I used to get advice from from long gone, WWII mechanic father. Steering head, he said it should fall, not bounce, which in my lifetime I've found pretty accurate. Regarding leaks, I told him a dealer wanted $800 to fix a primary seal leaking on my Harley. He said "Jesus Paul, do you know how much oil you can buy for $800?". I fixed it myself because leaks bother me, but his valid point was some leaks, just let them leak :)

    • @WildlifeMoto
      @WildlifeMoto  Год назад +1

      He sounds like a wise man indeed. A small leak from a seal is probably to be expected on an old bike. However, my bike was leaking from a plastic switch housing (neutral switch). The obvious concern is that it fully lets go on the road and dumps transmission oil all over my back wheel.

    Great bike and great videos. About the seat position, I changed the the rubber pads in the bottom of the seat and that improved the seat position.

      Thanks for that. I’ll order a new set. I think the rubbers are worn out.

    Only just found your videos. My 82 Rs discs have same grooves. Been passing brake test on mot for years like this so provided not warped and work ok grooves don't seem to be an issue. Mine don't pulsate thoughm. Might be worth stripping calipers/master cylinder first as cheaper than new discs. I also have oil leak that needs addressing but i suspect may be rear engine seal on mine. (I've also got an 87 Rs with similar leak). Just need to bite the bullet and get gearbox off and have a look.
    Great videos. Recognised roads near Dunmow as I'm in north Essex.

      Hi Andrew. Those roads around Dunmow are lovely, it's one of my favorite spots to ride. I'm going to do a full rebuild of the calipers and master cylinders. I've also got a new set of EBC floating discs. Unfortunately, one of the stock brembo discs had warped, making slow speed handling quite dangerous. You'll see in my later videos that the entire bike has now been stripped down for a full rebuild. It's going to take a while, but it's a fun project. Maybe see you out their on the roads of North Essex soon :)

    Great classic bike there WM! I’d replace the P08 Brembo seals, pads & replace the discs. Gotta do axial run out check after you’ve replaced them. Being new doesn’t mean they’re tracking straight. Other than that, I’d keep the leak. It adds to the charm of the garage 😉

    • @WildlifeMoto

      Thanks for the advice Steve. Noted on the seals and the axial run out :)

    Oil leak from join of crankcase to gearbox may be from gearbox (check you have the correct gearbox breather bolt (hole in the middle; check not blocked). Next likeliest is the crankcase rear main seal (big job!) or front gearbox seal. Good luck; hope its just the breather!

      Thank you. I’ve now got the bike apart so I can take a proper look. New video coming soon.

    I agree with what others have said about checking run-out of the discs after they've been changed. However, I don't agree with leaving the oil leak though.....coz it'll only get worse, and has the potential to deposit oil onto the rear tyre, which could be disastrous! Add to that any fluid/oil leaks are reason for an MOT failure. A bit of a ball-ache Mr WM........but look on the positive side.......it could be subject matter for a future vid!!

      I have a ball point pen and some gaffer tape at the ready. Yes I will get the leak fixed. It's probably just a case of fitting a new switch. The only problem is it looks like a right PITA to get to it.

    For brakes, measure disc thickness, rebuild callipers (easy job) use stainless braided brake lines (world of difference) and make sure master cylinder is okay. After proper Classic Black paint job, I did the pinstripes myself using pinstripe template and pinstriping brush. Oh, the seat circlips seem to pop off by themselves.

    Cool project! What year model is the Beemer?
    isn't it nice to ride an old bike and enjoy it for what it is? I find it super enjoyable to bimble along on a unprtentious (most people would say slow and boring, i'm sure) bike and just enjoying the scenery from time to time.
    Cheers!

      Hi. 1981 R100CS. Despite needing a few bits doing, she rides beautifully. Really enjoying the back to basics feel of this ok airhead.

  • @stephencartwright5046

    The discs on the old airheads are prone to this wear. They are a bit soft in an effort to make the brakes better... The Neutral switch is a known issue. Lots of 'fixes" out there. Best replace the switch. The wobble is a feature lol. Yes as other people have said play with the damper. How old are the tires? Try different tyre pressures. A few pounds up a few pounds down ride it and see if it still wobbles. There are so many things that can contribute to front wheel meanderings, mostly at the back of the bike, suspension, tyres, etc. It is an old bike. Everything is worn. Buy more of those clips on the seat they disappear. Back when these bikes were new I used to mechanic them....

      Yep I’ve resigned to having to fork out for the new discs. Yes I’ve been playing with the damper, it does make a difference.

    As to the speed dependent wobble, have you tried having the front wheel balanced?

    • @WildlifeMoto
      @WildlifeMoto  Год назад +2

      Hi, the entire bike is apart again. The wheels will get powder coated and balanced with new bearings. I'm also rebuilding the suspension, replacing the steering bearings and upgrading the top yoke. Basically the entire bike is getting stripped to the crank and rebuilt! Fun times. You can follow the (slow) progress on the channel.

      @@WildlifeMoto I saw the vid😃. Another thought on wobble is to fit a steering damper. My R1250RS had one as standard and back in the day that was a done thing for retrofit if I recall correctly.
