AC bro. If there was a way to test it, you should. I replaced my idler and tensioner pulleys before and it still made that supercharger whine after a 2 hour drive. I neglected the faint clicking noise (which it had when I bought it) then it turned into a slight grind. I tried diagnosing it, but left it alone since it didn't affect performance and it went away when I turned my ac on, but then the compressor started smoking one day and just seized. And thank God it did seize because I was getting to replace the alternator and water pump, with OEM ones. I would've just thrown parts and money at the car when it wasn't the problem. $600 later, its fixed, and there is absolutely zero noise on my FA5. On the 8th gen forums they say our compressors are a known weak point. Anyway, sorry for the long-winded comment.
Another FA5 guy I'm actually going to try and add some refrigerant. Maybe the system is low. I'm going to look up how to test it to. Hey man, I don't mind the long comment. It's cool to here about others experiences with their cars, especially 8th gens 😉. Anyways thanks for sharing. I'll keep you posted. Want to find out what this is 🔧
Gerb Productions there is a leak test, I believe. Refrigerant is a good temporary fix. A good ac repair shop would be able to diagnose it for you. They usually run about $110 for a vacuum and recharge. They should be able to tell you if you have a leak somewhere or if your system is low.
Man I do appreciate this comment. I just got this noise and I've been trying to diagnose this supercharger noise! Every time I step on the gas the noise seems to rise a little aka winding. I did read that this issue is common with the 8th gen modle.
Your idler pulley is aftermarket. The play in it is normal. Each pulley can make noise. If you get a mechanics stethoscope from harbor freight you will be able to pinpoint which pulley makes the noise. My alternator was the problem!
I have the same car..........having almost the same issue. I have done some research and found that at time the PCV valve makes a weird grinding or scratchy noise , I have chocked the pipe with a clamp and drove the car the sound has disappeared. i am going to change the PCV Valve now
to know for sure you will need a mechanic's stethoscope to check each one, your not gonna hear anything spinning them by hand. I neglected my idler pulley and it's destroyed the bearings and locked up.
I changed the pcv valve about a month ago and just changed tensioner and idler pulley today and I still have a slight whistling noise. I'm pretty sure that both of our problem is the ac compressor
Alternator is naturally going to be harder to spin because of the weight it spins. Also the magnets. That top pulley is a quick and cheap fix. But the AC compressor may very well be it.
Hi Gerb, I am in the process of shopping for a 2011 civic SI 2 door which has 180,000 kms or about 110,00 miles. The present owner told me he had to change the ' crank pulley" because it broke or got loose I believe. He replaced it with a new OEM pulley. Is this something that can be of concern in the long run.. Thank you
I was about to say... I thought you just replaced your idler Pulley and tensioner pulley...... I am going to make a video replacing my tensioner pulley and idler pulley soon.. I'm thinking its either the AC compressor..
Yeah, not too long ago bro. My idler, tensioner, and serpentine belt are made by gates and have about 30-40k on them. I'm leaning towards the A/C compressor myself
Gerb Productions i dont think any of the pulley is one of the problem. Im pretty much sure its your PCV valve cuz i have the same issue as you before. You just recently chage your pulley and idler pulley..
Pj Yeah, pulleys are newish. They have about 30k on them. It could be a bearing in the alternator, AC compressor, or something else. It's hard to say. Think I'm just going to order the AC compressor and see what happens
Hey gerb I have a 8th gen civic too. And I've been watching you're videos and I wanted to ask if you ever have found the issue with the winding supercharger noise bc I just got the same noise today. Any help will be much appreciated brother.
Come on bro you knew it wasn't either one of them... AC compressor or the water pump is going to be the culprit... the alternator should be a little harder to turn then idler and tensioner pulley due to the fact that it's a generator the water pump should have a little drag on it to due to the fact that it's in water... if it ends up being that idler pulley your next bolt on his on me
Chris Chase if you watch the previous video he clearly states that he recently replaced both of them the fact that the noise changes when the AC is turned on highly suggest it's in the AC clutch, so if you're wrong is my next bolt on on you? I should also explain I have the exact same car but the 08 and both of my pulleys almost failed completely and never made a noise however my AC does because I rarely use it makes that exact noise when I turn it on.... and my idler pulley has about five k on it and has about the same amount of play

Ended up being my AC compressor... I do want to pick up a stethoscope though

I have a midnight to your blocks is saving me from going to the mechanic I give you a thumbs-up and all your videos I see
to know for sure you will need a

Roshiek Davis agreed

Chris Johnson Good to know. Well, looks like I'm ordering an AC compressor
Not sure what it is but try pinching the PCV valve hose and see if the sound changes at all. It will take u 2 seconds. Good luck bro
Dane M Thanks 👍🏼

d00cmaross Thank you for the advice 🙏🏻. I'm thinking it's the compressor also 👀
Inspiring me to do a Civic Si Vlog channel... but i don't know a hundredth of the mechanical things you know haha
Erick Oaks Thats what's up! Honestly, it doesn't matter man, just upload & do what you want to do 🙏🏻

Did u ever try to change your PCV valve ?mybe thats the one its making noise..
Pj I haven't. Guess it doesn't hurt to inspect that either
Gerb Productions i dont think any of the pulley is one of the problem. Im pretty much sure its your PCV valve cuz i have the same issue as you before. You just recently chage your pulley and idler pulley..

Gerb Productions PCV valve its making a bearing noise when the get old
Prob ac clutch
Travis Anthony We will see 👀
I'm saying.....AC clutch bro!
Ordering an AC compressor tomorrow
Gerb Productions Nice... You should be good.
Hey gerb I have a 8th gen civic too. And I've been watching you're videos and I wanted to ask if you ever have found the issue with the winding supercharger noise bc I just got the same noise today. Any help will be much appreciated brother.
If you need to know the names of the pulleys in you Civic 3:33
Mine makes noise mostly when am on the gas when i let go off the gas it stops have no idea which one
I suggest changing both
Alternator will have more resistance. This is normal.
Vtec Banger Thanks man 🙏🏻

Curious to see what it will end up being. Either way loved the video just cool to know how to inspect these Si Pulleys 🤙🏼
Erick Oaks no doubt big homie gerb always informative and seems to have more fun than anybody out here
It's the pulley. 💯

Chris Chase We shall see 🤔
I hope it dont cause u too much trouble but i think its your compressor...i could be wrong
TRAVIS JONES We shall see... Have a feeling it might be that as well 🔧
So what was it? Same problem here... Thanks
Ended up being my ac compressor 👎🏼
Ac. Compressor?? Cozi have same issue im thinking idler pulley tnks
