I ordered my from Ed Fong! And it works great. It didn't cost that much and it supports his things. At this time I think they can use it because they were closed down for almost a year. 73. W4DES
Around 9:37 ... when you attached the RG174 stub, leaving the remnants of the 300 ohm cable in place (presumably for rigidity) may affect the performance of the antenna. In the Fong original, only the stub itself is across that gap -- no original wire is adjacent to it.
Thanks for this video Chuck. I've seen several versions of this antenna and seen videos of Dr Ed Fong talking about it. Your video was very easy to follow and I think I might have a go at building one. Best 73 G6XIB
One small suggestion - Basing one measurement off of the previously measured mark can lead to stacking inaccuracies. Fat marking pens add to this problem. My recommendation is to do the math and then measure everything from a common baseline.
I saw the SOTA flag and 4runner in your intro and knew instantly you'd be trustworthy. I've been wanting to build one of these and my buddy who just did sent me your vid. Good stuff, thanks for putting it up. This'll be my next antenna project. K0ATV
Ed recommends tuning it as you go. First you tune the UHF section. Then when you add the stub to the bottom *nothing should change*. If it does, your stub needs tuned because it’s not 1/4λ UHF. Once you have that, then solder the shorted (top) end of the stub to the VHF portion and tune it again.

What most people fail to tell you, is that you can adjusting the tuning by moving the coax soldering point, up / down, at the base of the antenna! I have cut, and trimmed an antenna before, and it Never got the damned thing tuned right! The key is the base connection has to be in a Sweet Spot.
Another fine video Chuck, what it the brand/model of helping hands you’re using? I really like that large design. You’ve also inspired me to do my own videos, I finally made my first one showing the MARS mod of an IC-735, I can’t believe none existed on the subject.
Gary, I put a amazon link in the video description for the helping hands and my soldering station. That's awesome on doing video welcome YT, I will check it out!
What kind of distance do you think a slim jim could get in a semi mountainous area on a ht? I'm studying to get my Tech, just looking into what gear to get now. Thanks.
I have a uv5r v3 and vx6r. It’s relatively easily hit mt diablo and mt vaca repeaters from west Sacramento depending where I stand outside on my balcony 🤷🏼♂️ figure they’re ~40-50 miles from me. They hear me through some snow but an antenna upgrade like this I should do a lot better.
If you get up on a peak and put it up say 10' it will do really well, like KazzArie said easy 50 miles maybe more. Check out this video, I was camping and setting at the base of a hill in a valley and my contact were 50+ miles. The contacts are near the end of the video. ruclips.net/video/H0u1jBiGIp4/видео.html

I don't get it why doe that part needs to be cut and then the same lenght cable added?
👍Great simple antenna for portable or base station use. These rollup window line J-poles are hard to beat in terms of size, weight and ease of use.

I love your video Sir! Thank you for all the information!!!
3:20 for any jpole you want the ground (shield) connected to the 1/4λ section. It does matter.
Great video! I have one of these antennas and they are great! I think I am going to have to try and make one for one of the kids to use!
Thanks Craig , yea pretty easy build!
Good video and these are excellent antennas, i have mounted in the PVC and mounted on my desktop inside as my emergency antennas. 73. KV5P
Can you do a video on how to build an Ed Fong GMRS antenna?

do you remember what freq you were using for SOTA contacts
For 2m depends 146.520 or 146.580. I might start on 520 if not busy and usually switch to 580

Where in the world do you find 300ohm antenna these days?
Tis where I purchased mine ,

Make sure you know what the 300 ohm line is constructed with. Some have foam filled dielectric and will throw off all the measurements.
