- Mushrooms are becoming one of the most popular meat alternatives on the food market today but given the specific conditions in which they thrive, they are still industrially produced, so how do they do it?

I just moved away from Kennett Square (I lived in a bordering town) and let me tell you some things they do not mention.
All surrounding areas smell like shit because of the farms. They say you get used to it, but after living there for 20 years, I can confirm you do not.
These mushroom companies have been saying for years they are working to reduce the smell. Trust me, they are not.
They pay their workers (usually Mexican) very little money and work them tirelessly.
Besides the nasty smell of shit in the morning, Kennett Square is a nice small town but I'm so I happy I left 😂

I agree. A mushroom factory not far from where I am and the smell is absolutely terrible
I worked in a mushroom plant in the Netherlands in about 1989. The compost was different, more broken down and compact. It didn't smell bad, but the stink of mushrooms was pervasive. But we were paid very well. We worked in big rooms with 2 x 3 tier stacks of metal beds(3m x 20m). Trolleys fitted to the sides so we could go up and scoot along when picking. Wouldn't fancy working in those wooden caves.

In the UK the tubs are at least twice the size of these.
I tend to buy two packs at a time, and chop any excess ones to freeze along with peppers and onions for basic fry ups with meat, wither russian style stroganoff or indian curry.
Finally RUclips is recommending something sensible

It's a pity they don't harvest the heat given off in the fermentation process: after the initial investment of setting up the capturing equipment, that could save very large amounts of money in the long run.

Shroom grow house got busted in my home town just south of madison wisconsin. Was fascinating to learn about it and how they were growing. Just need the good soil and spores. Pretty easy really

Mushrooms are one of my favorite veggies!! I could eat them everyday! In fact I thought growing them myself might be a good idea...until I saw this video. There is a lot to know and it's very messy! I'll just buy them, thank you.

I HATE having to drive past this town. You can smell it for miles around.
Edit: A farm directly upwind of me has started producing those partially composted bales that are used to make the compost mix. At least that only stinks when they move the stack around, but it make it impossible to go outside.

It's sad how it's always the same white ones at the supermarket. I love chanterelles but because they are expensive i can never buy them. There are sooo many species but i only see the same ones everyone i wish i lived in a mushroom house

Chicken manure is not an animal product it is an animal waste product so it is technically vegan to use

It's micelium cake grown with grain for extra health
They pay a company to do the lab work that mushroom requires
They are breathing nasty smells from the fermentation process without any protection tho, that's bad
the spores aren't released from these button mushrooms before they are picked. they are picked before spore release time. Hence button instead of cap.

Mushrooms really do take up the taste of what they grow on. These mushrooms were the most common and easy to grow in bulk because they love animal waste as fertilizer.
Shiitake, it's in the name. Personally I hold out for better mushrooms, but most people don't so it's hard to find anything decent tasting being sold commercially.

For all UK mushroom munchers... Portobello mushrooms taste stronger than white ones and they last longer in your fridge too, but they are a bit more expensive. Bloody love mushrooms me 🍄

Yes. You'll need to sterilize a substrate then inoculate it with spores. There's plenty of info on growing shrooms at home out there
It seems daunting when you read about but its pretty simple just remember when cultivating any mushroom the cleaner the better you will have a way higher success rate with proper sterilization techniques
Easiest is to start with a kit, then work backwards. Once you've figured out the kit, next time try buying "grain spawn" & mixing it with something like straw & shit to make your own "kit". You can buy the bags to put that mix in on ebay, not worth doing anything else when the bags are so cheap & have filters for air in them.
Once you've figured out how to do it from grain spawn, try dividing the grain spawn before using & putting some into new, sterilised grain & the rest into the straw mix & once you can do that without contamination, going further is only really for the novelty of it, since that's all you ever really need to do in the growing process.
Like others have said, there's lots of online info on how to do each step :)
& note, a pressure cooker really is a key part of the equipment for sterilising, so that it works & they're awesome for cooking too, so make sure you buy one if you're thinking about trying it beyond buying kits or ready made grain spawn

Not a single person responsible. Basically, you have 1000 individuals try it before the population knew what they were. Of those 100 die, 600 get sick, and 300 are fine. Those 300 now know which mushrooms to eat and share the knowledge.

Mushroom is my favorite food, when i live on my own, ill eat stuffed mushroom, mushroom soup, ramen with mushroom, noodles with mushroom, mushroom ughh... everything mushroom dish related.
Ill definitely try mushroom stuffed with crab meat first.

yup, very large quantities of cow manure or blood & bone, chicken manure is far more concentrated than cow manure though, so far less needed & it's far less smelly than blood & bone

Not really. They split from a common ancestor over 1.4 billion years ago. I wouldn't call that "descending"... just that all biology ends up being from a common tree at one point. Technically, "we descended from plants" would be accurate to that -- but not really. They didn't look at all like modern plants when we diverged.

oyster mushrooms are better at home :) Just as easy small scale, if not easier, but FAR greater savings on the cost of buying compared to button mushrooms :)
