Fun Facts: one of the master’s former students was Zuko (it’s mentioned in a tie in comic). And the master is voiced by Robert Patrick who played the T-1000 in Terminator 2 (making his comment about a long pointy arm a fun meta joke).

I love the closeup of Sokka’s face when Pindao tells him he will be a great sword master one day. He is finally at peace with himself and his place in Team Avatar. Sokka didn’t need a master to teach him sword fighting, he needed a teacher to tell him that he was perfectly okay the way he was.

Fun fact: That waterfall Sokka painted was based off the Gullfoss Waterfall in Iceland. Before they started creating Book 3, the creators traveled to Iceland for inspiration of what the Fire Nation landscape should look like

However the Fire Nation is warm, like Brazil. Fun fact, 'Brasil' means ember-like in Portuguese. 'Ember Island' is a nod to Brazil, and some of their clothing styles (like Katara's one-strapped cropped top) are a nod to Brazilian fashion.

Katara’s Fire Nation top was inspired by contemporary Thai dresses known as Prayook. The distinguishing feature of Prayook dresses is the flowing one-shoulder strap in lieu of the sabai (shawl) typically worn over traditional Thai dresses. And her necklace resembles traditional Dai-style necklaces, from the Dai people who are a Tai-speaking minority (similar to the Thai) in China.

Don't know if it's been said yet, but the appearance of Piandao is an homage to the show's master martial artist.
This episode is one of my favorites because, I always felt identified with Sokka, and this one makes me remember how you don't need to be a prodigy, particularly skilled or a genius, hard work and creativity are just as important. I love sokka so much man.

I feel like this gets missed a lot. But the show always knows what it's doing.
the level of mental fortitude Iroh displays by enduring solitary confinement and verbal abuse while still managing to put up the ruse of ferality while training his body just goes to show how powerful and diciplined he truly is. the Dragon of the West still remain a force of nature.
Sokka needed a win, something to strive towards.

I love this episode: I always like the Sokka episodes, and in this episode seeing him grow a ton, and seeing him grow thanks to his humility (which is some growth in and of itself) is great. Piandao is awesome. And I can't overstate how awesome prison Iroh is.

I can't see any other commenters bringing it up (and it isn't a spoiler! it's not actually plot-relevant and the show doesn't bring it up): Piandao was Zuko's sword master too! Zuko is incredible with his dual dao in part because he was trained by the best. Zuko and Sokka are mirrored a lot (what with the prodigy bender little sister outshining them thing going) and this is just another example.
Master Piandao's character design was based on the ATLA martial arts expert, Sifu Kisu. I don't know if you ever watched the videos I linked once of him explaining the types of martial arts that each nation's bending is based on.

Given his... 'special' way of thinking, it might have been too subtle for him.
the order of the white lotus is a secret society. there is no reasonable expectation that any outsider knows that it exists. so your scenario would be too subtle for anyone, let alone sokka.
@@sirmoonslosthismind the order of the white lotus are at the final battle and introduce themselves as such. It's also an ancient secret society so outsiders know that it exist they just don't know the people involved. The point being the main cast interact directly with the order of the white lotus sokka is a bit dense, but I think he would have understood at that point.
@@chrisbergsten1429 The lotus tile is a gift to remember him by. If Sokka ever interacts with a society called the white lotus, he can show the tile to prove he is a friend. Its more of a nice gift that might come in handy one day.
2:13 Missing his role in the group. He has been the default shot caller that come up with the strategies. Like when he directed everyone to infiltrate the drill. The way I see it, the party is made of 3 bullets and one gunman to point them.
Sokka's sword is sick
Unfortunately, chicken soup is entirely out of the question.
I think the best thing about sokkas development is the fact that, while he was made fun of by katara early in the series about insisting he was the leader, he legit BECAME the leader. He was 100% the leader of team avatar.

The show doesn't give Sokka an IQ but he's a genus and while I think it should have been a couple day excursion - I also accept he would pick in just one day too. He was already great with machete, club and Boomerang. Also, I type again, the dude is a straight genius!

I love this episode because it gives Sokka some character growth and a way to fight better. Up until this point, Sokka was not very useful in a fight and he was mainly just comic relief. I also like the Iroh training. The only thing I wish would have happened is for Sokka's training to be a little longer. I feel like two days isn't enough time to get well trained. However, they probably worked hard both of those days and they didn't have much time.

I've always found it weird how people just assume ages in this show when only 5 characters have had their age's revealed, Aang is 12 or 112 if you want to count his frozen winter soldier years, Toph is 12, Sokka and Yue are confirmed as 16 and Mai's baby brother Tom - Tom is 2.
So either the potential age gaps are not as bad or way worse than originally thought 😂

I haven't seen anybody else comment this so I guess I'll be the one to do it: The armour Aang was wearing was the creators making fun of Nickelodeon's suggestion to give Aang armour to make him more marketable and supposedly every piece was designed by a different animator.
Also a reference to Soul Calibur while they were at it.
And that came directly after a reference to FFVII's Tifa Lockheart.
I love the personality you guys bring to the reactions, it's dope! However, as the season goes on I'd recommend toning down the memes and cutaways as a lot of people come to see the genuine reaction to some of our favorite moments of the series. Other than that these are really fun and genuine to watch. I hope you this affects you positively in a creative aspect!
