Ashbury Heights: The Skeleton Tree - Track 02: A Hard Week

- Our second experiment takes the form of a duet in the vein of old 70's and 80's ballads featuring male and female vocals. We listened to a lot of really saccharine stuff while making this track including some Kenny Rogers *shivers*. Listening through the most successful duets of all time we realized we didn't like most of them. Trying to work with concepts that didn't really appeal to us and make that into something we found attractive was an interesting challenge.
This track took a long time to get out, mostly due to some other stuff getting in the way. We're on track for our next experiment however.
To get a warm 70s, early 80s vibe we used some real instruments this time around. The mixing was done almost entirely using Waves Abbey Road plugins which emulate the analogue sound quite well.
Hope you enjoy this creative little detour into ballad land and that you join us next time for a harrowing waltz :)
I still want a release of this song. I love it so much
They actually have released it! Just a day ago, in their new album. A pleasant surprise.
at 0:26 seconds Tea glances past the camera, through your eyes, and into your soul....
Got most of the lyrics... Just need a couple filled in (I've put them in parenthesis). Help is appreciated :)
It's been a hard week
Close to a heart break
Been on a losing streak
A handful of mistakes
Caught in a maelstrom
Life is just way too, big
Feeling my backbone
Crack like a dried, old twig
It's been a hard year
Just like the (last old tear?)
Why am I still hear
How do I still care
It's been a disgrace
A parade of judgements (gaze?)
Caught in a rat race
Afraid of my own face
It's been a hard life
It's never felt quite right
Cuts like a dull knife
(No/The?) bleeding just feels trite
The memories Ive savored
The few times I did do good
They've all lost their flavor
They've done what the memories should
It's been a hard week...
A hint of the early Pet shop boys in there. Like it a lot. Job well done.
absolutely love this song! ive been playing it incessantly ever since I first heard it!
What a great track......
Listening to it makes me feel like finally driving home after a "hard week" working.
Omg this is exactly what I love listening to❤
Very John Hughes in places, Then shifts into 80s new romantic synths. I approve!
I love this song! I wanna play this song while I'm driving this winter!
Ashbury Heights never disappoints! Thanks for uploading!!
Honestly I always have selected your best tracks of each album you have.
This song in particular sounds gorgeous to me. I think your vocal ranges fit really well in this style. Well done!
Tea the most beauty in this world.
Can you include lyrics in each song? That would be awesome!
I agree, that'd be great.
Anders... I feel like we've grown up together. Your music seems to follow my life story. This song shows the maturity and the struggle of us getting older and life beating us over the head to be more and more compliant with accepting we're adults now. I absolutely love what you've done yet again. The only request I have with this song is that the synth during the chorus continues to blast and loop then fade until the end of the song because I never want it to end. And maybe a solo synth keyboard part or something straight from the heart.
Thank you yet again for speaking what I'm feeling.
I like it...sounds very haunting. I'd listening to this while driving on the open road, thinking while sipping coffee, or as background music of some sort. Keep it going...
I'm really really enjoying the results of your experiments. Thank you so much for sharing.
Love these new songs and covers too
Please publish em!
Please release this for purchase, it is almost a new genre unto its own

About this song: since you released it I keep coming back to it almost every time towards the end of the week as I'm having my first beer of the weekend... it's right there next to The Cure's "Friday I'm in Love" :)
Love this song!
Wonderfully smooth.
Sooooo cool :) Great interpretation.
Tonite after many years I rediscoverd you, because of a spontain mood to listen ''Smile''. Then I found your new album , T.L.G.S. which is amazing. All my respect and apreciation , you are great artists and what I find special about your project is that you are brave to follow the time and adding new flavours to your music.

HTF do you dislike this song!!!!?!!
okies, im not gonna lie..
i really love ashbury heights over the years..
i dont know about this.. yes i know (read the description) but im listening to the music and - yeah sorry if history doesnt make me feel less ugh.. i would really prefer more phantasmagoria, less kenny rogers
Well it's perfectly ok not to like everything we do. I certainly don't think everything Trent Reznor ever did is good and he's my favourite artist :) The point of the Skeleton Tree is for us to interpret musical impressions outside of our usual palette. When we do albums we have a range of musical expressions that we feel work within the concept of an "Ashbury Heights Album", but we scrap tons of ideas that go outside our self-elected purview. This experiment gives us the opportunity to have fun with those notions and in the end that helps us keep our sound fresh. /Anders
OMG THIS SOUNDS SO SYNTHWAVE! And I also note some Gorillaz stile in it, but that´s just me.

Feels "old". You can do better guys!
If you read the text it's actually supposed to feel old so work accomplished I guess :) We wanted to explore the duet singles that had some popularity on the charts during the 70s and 80s. Thus we strived for a vintage type of sound as well as arrangement :)
I like it a lot better than most tracks on 'Take Cair Paramour' CD, actually. It kind of reminds me of 'Stublin' In' from Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman.
You should let Apoptygma Berzerk or Razorfade remix it for you.
