I think another way to handle burnout is learning to say no. Telling people "No. I can't," can really save your sanity in the long run. Not everything in life is urgent or HAS to be done right then and there.
Also, for those of you who are care givers to a loved one at home, one thing I learned from taking care of my mom, who was terminally ill (she passed in 2007), is that the little things are not going to change the prognoses of the health of the loved one. What I mean is that it doesn't matter if you did something-say wash the dishes-on a Wednesday afternoon vs. Tuesday night-that is NOT an indicator of quality of care that you were giving to that person. The same goes for anything else...like ordering in a pizza one night vs cooking at home when you're 1000% exhausted and don't have the brain space to cook. Being a caregiver is HARD, and you deserve breaks from it, in whatever way, shape, or form works for you and your loved one.

I clean, shop, cook, all Dr /hosp visits. Have a woman 2 hrs every 2 wks to take him on walks with walker and just keep him busy. I have a baby monitor always with me. I'm on call 24/7 & have had to go out at night to help him. He has his apartment attached to our hs. BUT. My sis, bless her heart, is coming today to take dad for a month! Yippy!!!!

I'm sure you've heard this, but turning off all notifications and only checking them, say, every hour could be helpful. It's rare that anything is so urgent it can't wait about an hour. Perhaps you only allow repeat calls, or only have notifications on for school / work related messages. And don't be afraid to ask your supervisor / teachers for help if you need any!

One-and-one-half years later, can't seem to be able to leave the house unless I absolutely have to. Burnout is actually a medical condition and not just a mental one either. A lot of it has to do with an over taxed or maxed out nervous system, especially if this situation goes on for a long period of time. The fight or flight response has a huge part in causing the condition. Once again, especially if your body is in fight or flight mode for elongated periods. Fight or flight by design is supposed to be a temporary body and mind response and state, to temporary situations etc. The longer the body is in this state continously or even off and on but for a longtime, the more it becomes almost the go to response for the body and mind. Less and less and smaller things and situations will trigger the response, almost like building up tolerance in reverse. This causes the nervous system and various other systems, chemical and hormone release like cortisol, and other body and mind functions to be overworked, misaligned, under and over responsive, etc...hence the tem burnout. Unfortunately that term and this condition, until more recently, we're defined more as a mental state or mindset, or the like, or just another way a person is overtired, overworked, depressed, etc, or sometimes just completely in the head of the individual. Therefore something that can be changed easily by changing mood or mindset, getting more sleep, just being happy, just changing behaviors or other things like that. This is in no means true in the least, aside from those changes can be helpful,,but by no means fix the situation alone. Some studies and research are finding that burnout may be very akin to PTSD and definitely have much in common with anxiety, depression from anxiety. An occurance of burnout can possibly take up to 2 years to recover from and that is if the cause(s) stop, and/or new ones or other traumas etc don't happen.
Also burnout is not new, or directly related to covid or working at home....in my case it was actually work place and bad jobs that caused my several occurances. Studies and research shows that the majority of occupational related or work burnout are actually not even the fault of the sufferer, but caused by bad management or mis management, bad work environment, imbalance and disconnect between upper management or administration and employees, unorganized or badly organized departments or companies. Inappropriate up to impossible work flow or out put expectations etc etc. This a double hit usually for employees in the area of burnout, because usually they are held responsible for being at fault by the actual perpetrators and may even think themselves to be as well. Burnout often leads to or sometimes just is a nervous breakdown and may lead to or be co-experienced with many other serious health problems and conditions. Take it very seriously, seek medical help and counseling or life coaching etc as well for the mental/behavioral aspects. And most definitely educate yourself about the condition as much as possible.

It's a long process for sure, but two things that have been helping are taking a walk during my lunch break every day, especially if I can walk on a bike trail or non-car path; and 2) taking a break, like a real break. I took my first real vacation in 3+ years and it was wonderful! It was a real wake-up call as to how much I've just been pushing and pushing. I don't talk to people. All i do every day is watch RUclips all day and night and deprive myself of sleep...
I stopped writing, i barely play the video games i like as much, i stopped drawing and hardly do much of anything each day. I can't even talk to my family without trying to avoid the conversation or walking away since i run out of things i want to say, or cutting myself short. I just can't do anything anymore ever, i have no healthy routines, no exercise, no meditation, no mindfulness and i just sit around. At least I'm healthy. Just sleep deprived and have nothing going on in my life, I'm not learning or building towards anything. I've never wished i was dead, but i just wish i where a better person. And i can't talk to others without driving them away with my insecurities or assuming everything they do is to shame or make me feel useless and driving them away to protect myself. I suck.
Nothing i do brings me joy, even small things like my cat sleeping in my lap at this very moment. I know I'm gonna have to get up and wake my cat up and wake up late in the afternoon tomorrow from sleep deprivation. Nothing in my life is going to change, the only thing that changes are the videos i watch and the food i eat, and the shows i watch. I have no skills, no social life, no real hobbies besides games.

Also, great video, thank you. I've always struggled with trying to reduce how much/often I burn out. I have sever depression so as soon as I have a boost of motivation /happiness I jump into doing a lot of stuff to make up for "lost time". I've recognised this but struggle to get the balance between doing lots and not doing enough.

For the past 5+ years I have completely lost interest in everything, this caused me to drop out of school and I have basically wasted the past 3 years of my life doing nothing. The last job I had was 3 years ago and I couldn't even stay for hardly a few months, I'd come home and have no appetite and go straight to bed, just to repeat everything the next day. I don't have any hobbies anymore, not that I could find anything new because I can't even motivate myself to care, nor have money to pursue anything or the motivation to get another job to have money in the first place. I'm screwed, I wish I had noticed all this when I was younger, but instead waited until I was 23 to get help. But now I'm 26 and have nothing to show for it, I just wish I wouldn't have to wake up for another day of this, I'm a burden to my family, and I'm not even helping myself get better.

Hi, Kati! I love your videos. I'm here for you, too. You're inspiring and thoughtful in your videos, sharing the difficulties you face.
As a recovering people pleaser with C-PTSD and comorbid issues, including intense dissociative disorders, it takes me time each day to figure out WHAT I want to do.
When feeling burned out, which likely stems from compassion fatigue (empathic person living in the suburbs when I grew up in the woods... ewww), I prioritize sleep and water. Ahh, the nectar of life! My brain thanks me, and I get energy to do physical activity, which includes walking in the local parks with my love and our pups.
The burnout causes a wall to form in my mind. So, one of my favorite things to do to challenge myself is look inward instead of outward, as connection with others became a habit, which led me to trust untrustworthy people. By doing shadow work, I've learned I'm an introvert, but my mom forced me to be extroverted.
Learning what I need in life has been the best way for me to deal with burnout, as I don't feel guilty when I need that little extra sleep, a good read, sitting in the sun and watching the mason bees pollinate our yard, and more. Kitchen witchery has been an exciting journey, too, as I don't use recipes (my husband calls me a mad scientist in the kitchen). Tiny adventures, like quests I give myself, light up my life so I don't feel stuck doing the job I love. Writing dark psychological fantasies with therapy skills included, and editing for clients who want to evolve in their craft and life.
Burnout over a long period caused fibromyalgia, so I stretch multiple times a day, soak in Epsom salt baths with fantasy music and candlelight, and sing songs that express the pains in me so I can focus on the present again. It takes a lot of work to manage the symptoms. But as a naturally resilient person, I know the benefits will one day surpass the costs, even if the benefit is brain power.

Another empath with fibromyalgia here. I live in a huge metro area due to my spouse, but I totally agree that we do much better in a simple, rural life with lots of contact with nature. I agree on the singing too...it helps, especially if I dance at the same time!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This is a really interesting post with a lot of wise sensible advice in it. I believe I have complex PTSD as well as ADULT ADHD and other co morbidities. Burnout is a constant problem for me as I’m a writer who throws myself passionately into my work but keeps hitting a wall of exhaustion and having to just sleep. X

    • @roshanrahealer
      @roshanrahealer Год назад

@@meagiesmuse2334 Thank you! Fibromyalgia sucks and is manageable.
I love singing in the shower, and when I need an extra oomph, I create really horrible yet funny dance moves while rinsing off.
There's a meditation I do when I'm overwhelmed, too, which I created one day when I started to black out and become a different part of myself. I imagine swimming upstream a raging river, then let my muscles relax and float downstream. As I fall down the waterfall, I imagine my shoulder blades relaxing, then flapping as wings grow from them, breaking the fall as I crash into the water. As darkness envelopes me, I close my eyes and pull my wings out, then emerge and fly into the sky, my dragon scales glistening in the sun. When I need to work or do chores, I imagine my intuition guiding me so my brain can relax. When I need to rest, I dive into the water, then come up and float with the leaves and flower petals.

I can tell you the exact time I became burned out at the age of 55 (73 now). Divorced, increased pressure at work, I had had enough. I quit working, sold my stuff, and traveled the entire U.S. I landed in Colorado. My sister was living in the mountains at that time and I house sat for here for free rent.
Eventually, I moved to another town, got some meds and therapy and went back to work (for a while anyway).
Now I’m really retired and after another MDD episode moved to Assisted living as all my therapists said I needed to be more social!! Thanks for listening. !😊

Running, late, and efficiency are my top 3 burnout thoughts, along with pejoratives. Escalating burnout feels like running on a treadmill that's rigged to go faster and faster. Catching myself staring into the distance thinking about nothing, as if my brain was forcing a break on me, is also a telltale sign that I'm overwhelmed and possibly burnt out. Not enjoying my work or studies is definitely the n.1 cause of burnout, but it's hard when burnout itself takes enjoyment out of everything.

My company recently announced they were doing layoffs and I was like finally thank God I'm a new person and a new department and I have a good chance of being laid off, and this company is known for having a very nice severance package.
