I went to visit my sister and my nephew who was about 5 or 6 at the time… while I was there I went to the end of the road to the local shop. My nephew wanted to check if his walkie talkies worked at that distance so as I was walking I kept checking in with him and letting him know where I was- anyway I got to the shop and told him I was at the shop then Proceeded to pick items up and go to the till to pay; there was one woman in front of me being served when all of a sudden the walkie talkie in my pocket said “COME IN UNCLE IAN…COME IN UNCLE IAN” I smiled at the people around me as I frantically went to put my items down to turn the walkie talkie down 😂 then he started singing “THE GRAND OLD DUKE OF YORK, HE HAD 10,000 MEN” 😂😂😂😂 I couldn’t stop laughing cos nobody around me found it funny

I’m jealous - Mike & Jess are hearing KP’s diary for the FIRST TIME; I’m hearing it for the 4000th time & I’m still laughing… Stephen Merchant’s delivery is perfect!
I'm surprised Ricky and Stephen didn't understand the thinking with an accent thing. It's not as if having an internal monologue is a weird concept, and I definitely think in my Yorkshire accent.
It's a known thing that some people think more in language and others more in concepts. The funny thing is it's not spoken about often so most people just assume everyone else thinks the way they do. I suspect Ricky and Steve think in concepts and Karl thinks in language.
Turns out only 25 - 50 percent of people think with an inner monologue, the rest have abstract thinking which is probably why they don't get it. I learned this because of this episode.
Listening to as much of these three as I have, it’s clear that both Ricky and Steve have no internal monologue. They make fun of Karl for talking in his head on several occasions, saying they never verbalise thoughts. It’s clear it’s just ignorance from the two of them, ironic really as they’re treating Karl as if he’s understanding less.
My granddad was really into CB, and the thing in America anyway was that the FCC was listening in all the time, and I want to say that if you didn't obey the etiquette (like the code or using a handle), you'd get in trouble. I managed to get through the whole thing with Kenneth Branagh reading it on Audible. He really brings it alive. It covers many historical events, including the Great Plague of 1665, the Great Fire of London in 1666, the Restoration, and the Second Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-1667. Plus, all the extra marital affairs with his wife catching him with the maid a few times 😅 and his trips to the theatre to see the first female actors and Shakespeareian plays. 1660-1669 There's so much!
I never read the whole thing but I heard it being narrated on the radio and being astounded by the amount of sex and drink being consumed. I'd always been given the impression that extramarital sex was invented in 1963😂
@@MarcoNegrisEye Agreed. It really could have been much worse, but the historical knowledge and safety measures resulting from it have allowed a slightly upgraded "Great" status.

Me and all my friends had CB radios back in high school so we could talk to each other while we were out in the woods hunting. Those were the days where we all had our pickups in the school parking lot with high powered rifles mounted in the back windows of our trucks. Not only did they never get stolen and no one got shot, the teachers and principal would come out after school and we would all check out each others guns and talk hunting tactics. We were interested in killing deer and elk, not each other! It was the 90's it wasn't that long ago. Its sad to see how far our society has declined since then. We all had guns available, yet when 2 people had a problem, they'd meet after school and use fists to settle it if it even came to that. Shooting each other never crossed anyone's mind. We do now have a major issue in this country today. It's not a gun issue, its a social issue.
When I first watched this years ago I was so confused at Ricky's non inner monologue, as that's how I think. Now I know some people think in images etc.

About the views, this show has done lower views than a lot of what we have put out. If it was only about views we would have probably switched to political reviews or something else that gets tons of views.
Fun Fact: The Monkey News bit changed at times because some people had accused Ricky of using a pre-recorded clip of it on the XFM radio show, so he would make it sound different at times.

I'm glad you guys understand that some of what Karl says is actually based on truth, like the dolphins with guns. The problem is the story or fact that he reads about seems to go through a filter in his brain which then changes the story into something loosely based on truth but with a lot of rubbish thrown in.
I agree on going to a local restaurant but I doubt that a place called tattoo’s that sells meat pies is a traditional Spanish taverna selling local fare 😂😂
I wonder if Carl's holiday diary planted the seed for An idiot abroad? (Edit) Little story about CB radio, late 70s or early 80s my brother took over a baby sitting job that my sister could no longer do he was around 15 years old and saving for a bike. The couple would come home around midnight but couldn't drive him the 2 miles back home as they had been drinking so on top of the agreed fee they would give him a bit extra for a taxi but he chose to walk home as there was a short cut along some disused train tracks but they still gave him the extra anyway and were surprised that he wasn't afraid of walking the way he did as there were no lights just fields on either side of the track added to which my brother would always take a backpack with 3 horror movies to watch (our local shop did a deal where you could hire 3 older movies for 2 pound for the weekend) but my brother laughed it off saying there wasn't anything to be afraid of (as 15 year old boys tend to do) What they didn't know was my brother used the walk along the track not only as a short cut but as a chance to smoke a joint before getting home. So one night my brother is walking home along this dark, remote train track after watching some horror films & probably high or at least on the way to being high when he started to hear heavy breathing behind him but couldn't see anything or anyone, he tried to remain calm but as he walked a little faster and the noises continued He said his heart was beating so fast and now he was fighting the urge not to run then he heard laughter and finally realised that Dave (father of the kids he babysat) had sneaked a walkie talkie handset into his backpack and was messing with him.
@Mike Whilst Jess falls asleep for a few minutes on the aeroplane journey to our fantastic holiday destination, how hilarious would it be to wind Jess' doomsday watch on until it said 0 days left when she wakes up and goes absolutely frigging mental, stuck at 35,000 feet‼️😂😂😂😂 Sorry I have a wicked side. My nickname actually is the "Violator", which I cannot argue about. But I certainly seek out mischief esp with a few pints of Stella swishing around my stomach‼️😂😂😂❤️🇬🇧🎅🎄👍🏻
Karl Pilkington was the producer of The Ricky Gervais Show having previously been head of production on a national commercial radio station. He is not the idiot he plays on that show.
He never plays an idiot, he just expresses his views which are different to us, simple is the word. He has no ego to fein any intelligence he doesn't have. Also being the producer of a radio station doesn't require intelligence, back then it was a lot of push-button, burning CDs and email reading.
He's not playing. Though there may have been some conversations set up beforehand. He also seemed to have problems with short term memory and long term memory. He also admitted to embellishing his stories, because in his words ' that's all you can do ' .He also took a lot of statements literally (often a sign of being on the spectrum).

I’d love Karl to be a guest with Theo Von. It would be too funny
Most people haven't heard of Samuel Pepys. I don't know where all these people in the chat are from.
I think in my own accent. I guess Ricky and Merchant lack an inner monologue
I think in my voice too? 🤔
It means his wife may have had tattoos. Come on, guys. 😂
Karl invented VR think about it
We have one that monitor your heart rate
27:50 if the guy is smaller the sled would go slower
Fred the Veg got his name because he used to bring them bags of vegetables for some unknown reason.
"But we never saw his wife...."
