There was a long armed resistance movement in the Baltic countries after the second world war which ended bitterly. The Soviet war in Afganistan might have been the final nail in the coffin of the Soviet system however.

It was the same thing with Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Before Russian Empire (208 years) both Estonia and Finland were part of the Kingdom of Sweden (149 years). Some Southern parts of Estonia were under Polish Kingdom (43 years) and even before that Estonia was part of the Danish Kingdom (127 years).
Soviet Russian invasion of Finland, Estland, Lettland, Lithuania during WW2 was a huge mistake. The annexation, deportation, colonization, russification, and sovietization under the iron courtin was a bad idea as well.

Historically speaking, the "corrupt" part in connection with the events is probably not that relevant. The real, underlying problem was the undemocratic government. Especially as, say, in Finland's case, Eduskunta absolutely refused the idea of cooperating with the soviets
In 1991 Estonia didn't declare independence, it was the restoration of independence. Estonian independence was declared in 1918.
