  • Mazda has introduced a new Mazda2 for 2024, however, it's a rebadged Toyota Yaris and actually continues alongside the current Mazda2. This is all very confusing. So I've reviewed both cars back-to-back in this video, to compare the new with the current, the rebadged collab with the real Mazda - looking at the practicality, spec and driving and then I give you my verdict.
Here are some quick specs on the cars:
    Mazda2 1.5 90ps
    Exclusive-Line
    Price £20,365
    1.5-litre 4-cylinder
    e-Skyactive G petrol
    6-speed manual
    Front-wheel drive
    90bhp at 6000rpm
    151Nm at 3500rpm
    0-62mph in 9.8s
    Top speed 114mph
    Combined 60.1mpg
    CO2 Emissions 107g/km
    Luggage Capacity:
    255-887 Litres
    2024 Mazda2 Hybrid
    116ps Homura
    Price £27,280
    1.5-litre 3-cylinder
    petrol hybrid
    e-CVT automatic
    Front-wheel drive
    116bhp at 5000rpm
    120NM at 3600-4800rpm
    0-62mph in 9.7s
    Top Speed 109mph
    Combined 67.3mpg
    CO2 Emissions 97g/km

Great review! I've been waiting for someone to do this comparison. Thank you! I prefer the Mazda Mazda 2...
Just an FYI - If you add the armrest you wouldn't be constantly knocking the knob! I think it's £250, but half that if you can fit it yourself. 😊

Cool review. Had been wondering about these two. I have the Yaris Yaris LOL. Love a CVT! These are all amazing cars and I don’t understand why the market is flooded with SUVs when superminis are perfect for most purposes.

I've got the Mazda 2 (real Mazda 2). 2018 Sport Black Plus version. Great car, genuinely fun to drive yet refined enough on a motorway cruise. Great real world economy (even when compared to the new Toyota version). 100% reliability. Nothing been done outside standard servicing. It also looks great with standard body styling kit. I personally prefer the looks of the pre face lift car but I realise that's subjective. That said if you want a full hybrid then Toyota have the technology nailed. My Dad has a Toyota hybrid.

I drive the NEW Yaris (2024) with exactly the same engine. The fuel consumption is 3.9 liters 100 km. But driving on roads up to 80 kmh brings it back to 3.2 liters 100 km! TEST those 2 cars yourself and see and feel the difference. Because you are the one who has to drive the car!
    Have fun 😊

I think they should call the hybrid the Mazda 1.
It would be far less confusing and when anyone asks which one out is, you can say, "the Mazda one!" Boom boom 🤣 💥

@@jdmguy44 probably not. I'm not afraid to let the remap done by a well known garage, because they have the name to lose. Even brand new cars. Never had any mechanical issue with any car after some 1 million miles. My '3' is done by BBRGTI.

im canadian so im not familiar with what the consumer reports equivalent would be in ireland.
i drive a scion ia aka mazda 2 sedan here and its one of the best. the other good one used to be honda fit. theyre just average for a lot of things, but theyre reliable and mazda 2 is sporty, fit used to be sportier. the toyota yaris hatch used to be a toyota but in 2020 it turned into a mazda 2. anyways the old yaris hatch was #3 and not actually recommended. i remember the seats being uncomfy on it. the scion ia / mazda 2 had a few better mpg than every other 4 cylinder for its time.

I like the Toyota-copy hybrid, but when I drove one last year, the back doors felt like they were made out of cardboard. Very economical though. The headroom issue is the same as in my Ioniq hybrid -- it's down to aerodynamics typically a feature of these HEVs - oh, and eco tyres do make a wee bit more noise.

    • @jdmguy44

It's not a copy Toyota hybrid. It is a Yaris with different badges and bumpers.

do like mazda 2 but don't really want a big engine, my 1.2 i20 only 12-14bhp less but only 1045kg and nearly 1.1 with tank fuel so it performs not bad for it size. if uk follow france with weight tax this car may be slightly over that 1600kg it 10 euro for every kg over or 1800kg its 20 euro every kg over that sound like it can get quite costly so smaller engine slightly less power but lighter i feel would been a better option, think i dis like the button start up, whats wrong with the key to start it. so really two things engine size adds weight for not really a lot extra compared what i drive now and key less start everything else i do like. i am looking for a very long term car hopefully over the next 20 years, if i get family i get a 2nd car but still keep my next car. atm got my eye the 2015 shape new i20 it has every thing i want in my next car don't want to be gadgets just more to fail, don't have sat nav but happy to still use phone but every thing else im after it has, good looking car, reliable engine, mines been very good for last 4 years and not a crazy cost. but i have looked in to the mazda 2 and quite like them just a few things not to sure on esp if it a car for a very long time i might get very costly

Sound's like more of an issue with driving ability. Have owned various bigger more powerful cars over the years, but I get in my Mazda 2 and make it go very quickly, be that away from the lights or overtaking! Definitely not underpowered and the 0-60 figures back that up.

You can say the same about the Toyota Yaris Sedan, which is a rebadged Mazda 2 Sedan. These two aren't nearly the only examples of platform sharing (which is just common sense to cut production costs). A lot of brands work together and do the same. ;)
