  • From Wikipedia:
"State of Independence" is a song originally written and recorded by Jon and Vangelis for their 1981 album The Friends of Mr. Cairo. Jon & Vangelis released "State of Independence" as a single in 1981, with "Beside" as the B-Side. It was re-released in 1984 and this version peaked at 67 in the UK Singles Chart[1].
Jon Anderson recorded a new version of the song for his solo album Change We Must (1994) and a live acoustic version can be found on his Live from La La Land (2007). Jon Anderson also released a live version with Yes bandmate Rick Wakeman as Anderson/Wakeman.
Donna Summer covered "State of Independence" on her 1982 album Donna Summer produced by Quincy Jones. It was released as the follow-up to her hit single "Love Is in Control (Finger on the Trigger)" in 1982. Summer's version of the song features an all-star choir including among others Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, James Ingram, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Loggins, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. The single was reissued in Europe in 1990 in support of a compilation album entitled The Best of Donna Summer
    Lyrics:
State of life, may I live, may I love
Coming out of the sky I name me a name
Coming up silver word for what it is
It is the very nature of the sound of the game
    Siamese, Indonese to Tibet
Treat the life as a game if you please
Coming up Caribbean sense of freedom
    Derives from a mediative state
    Moving on, believe that's it
    Call it magic Third World
It is, I only guessed it
    Shah blam ee dee
    Shah blam ee dah
    Shot to the soul
    The flame of Aura'ladin
    The essence of the word
    The state of independence
Sound like a signal from you
Bring me to meet your sound
And I will bring you to my heart
Love like a signal you call
    Touching my body, my soul
Bring to me, you to meet me here
Home be the temple of your heart
Home be the body of your love
Just like holy water to my lips
Yes, I do know how I survive
Yes, I do know why I'm alive
To love and be with you
Day by day by day by day
    Say yea yea yea yo
    Yea yea yea yo
Be the sound of higher than today
Time again it is said we will hear
We will see it all in this wisdom here
This truth will abound the land
The state of independence shall be

I just heard the todmobile version and my mind was blown...this version came up on the right with all the other suggestions and I listened to it for the first time....... ever! After having my mind blown, now it was obliterated and I listened to it 6 more times in a row!!! What a spirit moving, flying through the clouds sensation. My soul feels rejuvenated...what beautiful lyrics, vocals, arrangement, instruments and great recording production. Namaste.

The first verion I heard from this Song was Donna Summer's and I have to say, it is an amazing cover and I loved it ( and still do). Then one day I heard the origial version by Jon and Vangelis, and then I realized why I love it so much, Jon Anderson touch. This song elevates you in ways only Jon can do.

I heard a sweet story the other day while on a hike during a full moon in Los Angeles. A young lady told me that back in the 70's she was very depressed. She suffered for almost five years until one day she had a dream. In the dream Jon came to her and told her she could escape the darkness. She woke up and had to go through many years of therapy. During that time she listened to Jon's solo music and it lifted her up. You have touched many folks in the Los Angeles area Mr. Anderson.
