    "Donna Summer's song?" Her version is a cover of the original song, written by Jon Anderson and Vangelis.

    • @SWSimpson
      @SWSimpson Год назад +15

      Yes, they wrote it, which they have credit for, and they released it as a single in 1981. All of that is true.
      Is it Michael Jackson's song? Because his name is the first thing in the title. No, he just sang with other great singers in a choir on this song, which was a brilliant idea. But, I'm okay with that because someone is focusing on what Michael did, and the footage after the recording is pretty interesting to see these people greet one another and sing like the pros that they all are.
      But, do you honestly believe that no song should ever be referenced with an artist's name unless that artist wrote it and recorded and released it first?
      So, I can't say Diana Ross' song Ain't No Mountain High Enough?
      Or, Donna Summer's song Mac Arthur Park?
      Then, you can't ever say, Olivia Newton-John's song because she didn't write any of her songs, and the same goes for Whitney Houston. The only song one could say is Barbra Streisand's song is the only one she wrote - Evergreen.
      Usually, it is only meant to refer to that particular artists' version/recording of the song.
      I don't see what the big deal is. On Donna Summer's Quincy Jones produced version, Jon Anderson and Vangelis are credited with writing the song. Donna was always careful to ensure everyone got credit for their work. And, it is likely that Quincy Jones asked permission from Anderson/Vangelis to record the song with Donna Summer.

    This song! This ensemble! The message! Donna Summer! This song should have been huge, but Geffen, who forced the coupling of Summer and Jones, released a horribly mixed single and obviously a 0 budget for a video and the song went nowhere in America. Such a tragedy. Thank you Quincy Jones for assembling this all star choir and of course Michael. You and Donna are missed greatly.

    Donna Summer is on record as saying that she didn’t want to record this song because she thought that it was too much of an out there arty kind of song that wouldn’t suit her. But Quincy Jones, having seen how the original was so successful for Jon Anderson and Vangelis, knew that it was perfect for her style of delivery and her voice. So, with very little modification (a few minor tweaks here and there), she recorded it magnificently!
