Hi, nice video, very ilustrative, please, do you know maybe where can i order that isolate tape that you are putting in the 54:01 minute? maybe in rolls. That black mate tape also for cover the battery connectors.
I was so looking forward to fixing this issue on my own, but watching an experienced person I'm realizing that my un-soldering skills are way below what's needed. You guys, however, seem knowledgable and skilled so I'm contacting you for service :). Disappointed I'm not getting to tinker with my device though; but for some reason I would like my device to still be functioning post-tinker.
Wow you are the 'Stig' of iPod Repair! This is the best video I have seen of this process, and extremely useful. PS - The gloves and single shot/angle are a great touch. RESPECT!
I'm glad my iPod can't sue me for malpractice, its in the trash now. The video was excellent, its just it all went to pot when I soldered the new ribbon cable to the main board. The solder tended to bridge between the tiny solder points, but would clear when swiping across them with the solder iron. Then when plugged into the computer it was recognized stating it needed updating but after that nothing happened. So I assumed a solder point was not made and tried to solder each point one at a time. It only got worse from there. So almost, I actually wish I had another one to try the repair again. What temp is you solder iron set at, mine was at 650f.
I watched you solder in the connection and you went across it with solder . I was wondering if that whole charger connection is the same potential or if you have to keep solder seperate on each pin ? Where is the negative pin ?
Hello, thank you for the video. I was wondering what diameter of soldering wire do you use? also at about 9 minutes in the video it looked like you were soldering before you desoldered. I'm new to soldering so im just trying to figure it out before I attempt to solder and fix my ipod. thank you
i have followed ur video, replaced port cause i was not getting a good connection to the computer and it would not boot or restore with out errors. now it gets to the point in the restore with the apple and status bar that doesnt move. i do not get any errors even when sat overnight. I do not have it totall put together. soldered flex cable but is not mounted into the ipod. just soldered. what point in the reassembly on the video would you try to restore. any info would be helpful
pugetsoundelectronic Can you do a Ipod touch screen replacement tutorial. I fixed my iPod button with your tutorial, but my home screen still won"t respond even when I did a hard reboot and restart. I'll need to replace the screen then
Hello, thank you for the video. I have an ipod touch 5th gen that had a certain spot in the charge port you had to put the lightning charger for it to charge it kept getting worse until it stopped altogether. do you know if its a bad battery or the dock connector flex cable? I wanted to know so I don't have to replace them both.
It sounds like the dock connector flex cable internal pins are bent or damaged. This does not mean the battery is good you should test while you have the device opened.
At the end when you connected the LCD screen to the LCD shield plate, what was the liquid you applied to the shield plate? I believe it was liquid adhesive. If so what is the brand and name of it? I ask because there are no 5th gen adhesive pads that are sold for the 5th gen iPod touch. Tanks
hey do you have to solder the loud speaker back on to the dock connector flex cable or no bcuz i can't and im just wondering if i put it back without soldering it will it still stay connected and work after
Ben Potter If you want the loud speaker to function you will need to solder it on the dock connector flex cable. If you plan on using just the headphone jack for audio you do not need to solder the loud speaker on. If you have any further questions please let us know.
Flux, it helps with the soldering. that's why he just gliding across the board and the solder points when he was soldering like all pins on for the port ribbon cable...:d
The heat gun or solder Iron? I recommend 135C(I believe I said 150C in video) for hot air when opening the device and the solder iron should be set to a temp to melt lead free solder @ 750F +
I'm just wondering, what happens if my iPod home button is physically jammed. What replacements do you guys try, to fix it? Is it the same as the last video? Or do you have to replace the entire screen display ?
Pitch Dark If the home button is stuck we recommend you replace the home button first, if you can not replace the home button because the flex cable is damaged than you would have to replace the entire dock connector flex cable. If you have any further questions please let us know, thank you for your time and have a nice day.
Thanks a lot for replying I really appreciate it! I don't really have any experience in this field so I might try fixing my iPod later on with help of your videos. I really wish I could send you guys my iPod but I live in Canada :C
Ok, let me explain you : the soldure (dunno how to write it well) in industrials circuits as computers or smartphones here, are mostly lead free. So it's like tin only. What he is doing here is adding leaded soldure to be able to melt easier the industrial soldure. Because industrial soldure melts at a higher temperature. Then, he uses flux in the syringue to decape the surface, so the impurities, such as dust or rust, to put them out. It kind of clean the surface. Actually, in the soldure you can buy in shops, there is often flux in the center of the wire, but for small soldiers you can use some, it's not obligatory. I'm not completely sure of what I said, but i read much about these and I often weld. By the way, I've never tried using flux because it's more for professionals. Sorry if my English is bad :p
I just attempted this on a friends ipod...I did not remove the battery because it was completely dead. I soldered everything up and all solder points look good but the ipod will not power up. Any suggestions? I thought about removing the battery and soldering on a brand new cable, then reinstalling the battery. Any help would be appreciated.
Chris Meilleur My soldering iron does not utilize a set temperature, it uses a "Smart Heat" technology that can be explained via Metcal website. Setting your solder iron to 650F should be fine, yes we use both Chip Quik Alloy and Zeph low melt desolder wire.
Fantastic Video buddy, very detailed and accurate. just a question I couldn't find the answer for below....what temp heat & Iron are you using please ?Also I have an ipod 5th gen that has a jumper missing due to some repair place braking, not the speaker dues not work, Is this something you could maybe repair ?Kind Regards Sunny
In this video I use a Metcal solder station that does not require me to set the temp however if you're soldering iron does require you to set a temp 700-750 F should be good. If you provide me a picture of the missing jumper wire I can give you guidance when reconnecting it. We no longer offer mail in repairs. If you have any further questions please let me know.
I think I messed up when I desoldered the ribbon cable. It almost looks impossible to solder the new ribbon cable. Can I send a picture and maybe you can tell me what I can do about it? I'd appreciate it.
I changed both the battery and the dock connector flex cable. But my ipod still wont have power? Do you any ideas what the issue maybe? Its a 32gb 5th gen touch
Daniel Prince I do not remember where each tool I used was purchased from but you can purchase the power screw driver from the link below: www.all-spec.com/products/502GT.html?gclid=CjwKEAjw8e2sBRCYte6U3suRjFESJAB4gn_g4EAYQkSDBNuIeQ100Ubt1CSInDrEkxdvcRthLoXyDxoCRv7w_wcB
I keep having problems with my ipod touch speaker. Headphones work fine but when i try to play music or anything the speaker makes a static/distorted type sound. Would it be hard to replace the speaker?
When I connected the Ipod to the DC power supply it was not charging anything because the battery was removed. The DC power supply provides current to the logic board so I may power it on while the battery is removed.
jayluketa Hot Air for disassembling the unit 180 C and the soldering station I use does not utilize a temperature gauge(Metcal Smart Heat)but 650 F is fine if you can set the temp.
Well done video! I really liked the close up camera angle and enjoyed the tips you gave throughout. I am however in a little bit of a predicament though. After thinking the install was going smoothly, I went to power on the device after soldering the ribbon cable and there was nothing. Checked power and solder joints and both looked good. I ended up desoldering the dock cable and found that the bottom right connection point on the board itself was missing copper and had no solder in that little joint. Do you know what this point does or what would you recommend for me to do? I also could post a picture of the part I'm talking about if you are willing to help me out and think the picture would be useful. Also do you know if the dock connector has anything to do with the screen functioning properly? I'm sure it does I just don't know how. I really would appreciate any reply or help.
Yes provide a pic of the missing solder pad and I can assist you. You may have to run a jumper form the missing solder pad directly to the dock connector flex cable.

I use a voltage reader, which I connect between the Ipod and the charging cable. If the device is not pulling voltage from the charger than it is possible the dock connector flex cable(Could be other components) is bad. I disassemble the device to test the battery with a multimeter, if the battery is less than 3.7V when charged or 0V when dead the battery is bad. There are many test to perform when diagnosing the Ipod I recommend you use a multimeter and voltage reader to diagnose the issues you are inquiring about.

Hey excuse me do you know where i could find specifications or something on that pin layout of the port ribbon cable. i wanna know where the positive ground data in and data out are. just like usb. i messed up my ribbon cable a couple fingers and i just wanna make sure those pins are okay and then use them. if i can find a way to solder them that'd be awesome. but for now i just wanna find out if they're okay. my frekkin ribbon cable ripped off, i was fixing before i saw this. but the ipod was already broken just trying to fix. just need those four pins. Do you think you could help me? I just need to know where the four lines of the usb go in the phone. where they are amongst all those pins on the motherboard.
What is that tape called? I have seen it plenty but don't know what its called. Handy stuff to have in this business. Great video and thanks for taking the time. I couldn't even get my ipod nano 3 gen open without breaking the plastic tools and finally the screen. I got the new battery soldered in ok but now I need a new screen.
+pugetsoundelectronic Do you HAVE to solder everything back into place or will it all still work without it if i just put it all back together normally
Awesome vid! Would not have attempted this fix without it. Altho charge port now works, battery dies within a few hours of full charge after replacing dock connector. Current draw seems to be coming from components under copper foil, attached to home button. They are hot to the touch constantly. Everything else works good. Not sure were I messed up... O.o
I would go back and check the dock connector flex cable and make sure there is no bridging of the circuits where you attached the flex cable on the Ipod logic board. It is also possible the replacement cable is bad, does the home button work and the headphone jack?
Thanks for the reply. Yes all functions relating to dock connector are working (home, charge, speaker, headphone.). Im kicking myself for buying cable cheap off amazon. Im not as talented as you are with soldering, would you recommend taking it off and reinstalling? Got nothing to lose... Else I will order another cable elsewhere and try again.
If you don't mind replacing the cable I would do it if the device is heating up. It could just be a faulty cable and not necessarily cheap. If you have any further issues please do not hesitate to contact me and I will do my best to assist you.
Hi, do you still repair iPods? I have an old iPod touch that needs a new charging port. Apple asks for my Apple ID & password which I don’t have. Would you need that? I broke it in highschool & didn’t have they $ to fix it then.
I do not remember the settings I used when making this video but I use 135c now when opening an Ipod Touch 5th or 6th Gen. If you have any further questions please let me know.
hey, my iPod wasn't charging anymore and so I ordered a charging dock and instead of heating it where the battery connected too and where the charging dock connected too I just pulled it off but when I put the new battery and charging dock on it turned on and I put the charger in and it wasn't charging do you think it's a charging dock that isn't working or what it have been where I pulled the things off
Hello, It sounds like you may have pulled up the solder pads and did you resolder the dock connector flex cable or battery when installing the new components?
Out Source Repairs yes, at first it Turned on and for a few seconds I was able to see the screen and I plugged in the charger as soon as it turned on but it wouldn't show that it was charging maybe its the charging port on the dock connector?
Hey I need help my ipod 5th generation won't turn on at all like the home and lock buttuon trick doesn't work and my home button doesn't work. I do not know what happened i just left it under my pillow I came out of the shower and it didn't turn on at all any thing you know that could had made this issue??
+marcos catrifil What do you mean by home button flex? The home button is attached to the Ipod Touch 5th Gen dock connector flex cable. You can only change the home button dome switch if your home button dome switch is bad. We provide a how to video below: ruclips.net/video/lzn5O3CiJ9E/видео.html
okay i messed up on removing the dock from the motherboard postimg.org/image/a8q6nu38h/ what can i do now? should i poke the dots with the soldering machine until it removes? HELP!!
Hello, You will need to run a jumper(Copper wire) from the damaged solder pads to the connection/probe points shown in the second link below to reconnect to the circuit with the new dock connector flex cable. The first link below is of the photo you sent me with areas I highlighted in red that may need to be jumped. Hey I sent you guys an email several days ago but have yet to receive a response. Not sure if the message on the website went through or not but if you could get back to me it would be appreciated :)
Out Source Repairs I had a question about an iPod 5th gen I have that cannot charge due to a corroded charging port/end of flex cable. I wanted to know if you guys were able to fix that as well as replace the battery in it since it has been inactive for about 2 years now. I have a replacement flex cable and battery I could send with the iPod if needed. Thanks :)
Hi, I changed the flex cable on my ipod but now the loud speaker is not as loud and low bass are creaky, is this an issue with the flex cable or the loud speaker ? I desoldered/resoldered the loud speaker & the flex cable but i'm still having the issue. Thx

Hello first Thank you for the video one question what are you putting on solder joint before you solder? Thanks again and Have a Great Life.
I watched you solder in the connection and you went across it with solder . I was wondering if that whole charger connection is the same potential or if you have to keep solder seperate on each pin ? Where is the negative pin ?
Why did you solder after sticking the flex cable connector at 34:54 ?
Hello, thank you for the video. I was wondering what diameter of soldering wire do you use? also at about 9 minutes in the video it looked like you were soldering before you desoldered. I'm new to soldering so im just trying to figure it out before I attempt to solder and fix my ipod. thank you

pugetsoundelectronic Can you do a Ipod touch screen replacement tutorial. I fixed my iPod button with your tutorial, but my home screen still won"t respond even when I did a hard reboot and restart. I'll need to replace the screen then
after taking apart should you add more adhesive so it stays together better
Hello, thank you for the video. I have an ipod touch 5th gen that had a certain spot in the charge port you had to put the lightning charger for it to charge it kept getting worse until it stopped altogether. do you know if its a bad battery or the dock connector flex cable? I wanted to know so I don't have to replace them both.
It sounds like the dock connector flex cable internal pins are bent or damaged. This does not mean the battery is good you should test while you have the device opened.

what heat gun do you use?
is there a trick to the soldering so you dont make bridges?

hey do you have to solder the loud speaker back on to the dock connector flex cable or no bcuz i can't and im just wondering if i put it back without soldering it will it still stay connected and work after
Ben Potter If you want the loud speaker to function you will need to solder it on the dock connector flex cable. If you plan on using just the headphone jack for audio you do not need to solder the loud speaker on. If you have any further questions please let us know.
What did you connect to the battery terminals around 38:00 ? Thanks
Flux, it helps with the soldering. that's why he just gliding across the board and the solder points when he was soldering like all pins on for the port ribbon cable...:d
Jacky Chan yes I know he added flux I mean how did he get the iPod to boot off an external power supply
The Ipod was connected to a DC power supply.
pugetsoundelectronic OK. Thanks, so it is 3.8v like the battery right?
Yes 3.8v - 4v set on the DC power supply is enough power.
Great video. What do use in the syringe and the hyssop?
***** In the syringe is flux and what do you mean "hyssop"?
Gratz for this very professionnal video ! Can you confirme me the heat gun temperature used to unsold ? Thanks
The heat gun or solder Iron? I recommend 135C(I believe I said 150C in video) for hot air when opening the device and the solder iron should be set to a temp to melt lead free solder @ 750F +
Well it means 135degC for remove the back cover, and 400degC for melt soldier and remove flex is it correct ?
What do you mean remove the back cover? Yes 400 deg c to melt lead free solder.
dude, i would have you repair my ipod anytime, serious pro right here!
when removing the battery i pulled off the middle solder pad is there anyway to replace it?
when you hook ipod to external power source what is the amps or wattage you're using and what solder and flux are you using
I'm just wondering, what happens if my iPod home button is physically jammed. What replacements do you guys try, to fix it? Is it the same as the last video? Or do you have to replace the entire screen display ?

What temp is your Iron at? Also, are you using chip quick type alloy?
Chris Meilleur My soldering iron does not utilize a set temperature, it uses a "Smart Heat" technology that can be explained via Metcal website. Setting your solder iron to 650F should be fine, yes we use both Chip Quik Alloy and Zeph low melt desolder wire.
Great video. What temp is your iron?
I have no idea what temp was on the iron because I used a Metcal soldering station that automatically sets the temp while soldering.

I think I messed up when I desoldered the ribbon cable. It almost looks impossible to solder the new ribbon cable. Can I send a picture and maybe you can tell me what I can do about it? I'd appreciate it.
Yes of course, upload the photo to postimage.org and provide me the link once uploaded.
my question is
What type of cable used to turn on the ipod without battery, is copper soldered to the tongs ??
Hello, The cables used to power on the Ipod without battery is connected to a DC power supply.
what size phillips screwdriver tip are you using.
Hello, The tip I used with the screwdriver was a standard tip that fits screws between 1.5MM - 2.5MM
I changed both the battery and the dock connector flex cable. But my ipod still wont have power? Do you any ideas what the issue maybe? Its a 32gb 5th gen touch
Dom Fac No I have no idea what the issue may be, you will have to take it to a local repair shop and see if they can diagnose the issue for you.
Would you mind sharing with us where you purchased your tools? I've been looking for a small powered screw driver like that forever!
Daniel Prince I do not remember where each tool I used was purchased from but you can purchase the power screw driver from the link below:

Hello good video. Do you think it's possible to run this ipod touch 5 without battery only with lighting charging cable ?
In my experience the Ipod Touch 5th gen will boot on and then shut of when only connected to the lighting charging cable(Only tried a few times).
scared to sue hot air gun when remmoving battery.
Never got trouble like explosion? 200Celsius?
How many Volts and Amps did you provide the iPod with your dc power supply?
When you plugged the charging cable in, your dc power supply amps dropped to 0 right? Indicating a charge has started?
When I connected the Ipod to the DC power supply it was not charging anything because the battery was removed. The DC power supply provides current to the logic board so I may power it on while the battery is removed.
What temps are you using for the hot air and soldering? Thanks
jayluketa Hot Air for disassembling the unit 180 C and the soldering station I use does not utilize a temperature gauge(Metcal Smart Heat)but 650 F is fine if you can set the temp.
pugetsoundelectronic Perfect, Thanks a lot for doing these videos I'm learning a lot.
when putting it together again do you need to apply more adhesive?
The_Haunted_1 No you do not need to apply more adhesive as long as the adhesive on the EMI shield is still intact.

ok thanks!
What type of soldering wire are you using?
Hello, is it imperative to remove the batterie? What is the flux that you use?
+aymeric aymeric Yes you have to remove the battery from the Ipod before you can remove the dock connector flex cable and I use Kester flux.
thanks a lot for answer

thank you bro...
I didn't know it was soldered lol~
hay my name is aron bird how mush wod it be for you to replas the dock cnnector om my ipod tush 5
+Aron Bird pugetsoundelectronics.com/Apple-Ipod-Touch-5TH-Gen-Dock-Connector-Repair-Service-0364.htm
+Aron Bird That spelling.
what product you appliques with the syringe?
What is that tape called? I have seen it plenty but don't know what its called. Handy stuff to have in this business. Great video and thanks for taking the time. I couldn't even get my ipod nano 3 gen open without breaking the plastic tools and finally the screen. I got the new battery soldered in ok but now I need a new screen.
+Tom Anjing Are you referring to the yellow tape? If so the yellow tape is called "Kapton" tape.
I loved my 5 then it stopped charging, i got different chargers and nothing worked. I'd try this
+pugetsoundelectronic Do you HAVE to solder everything back into place or will it all still work without it if i just put it all back together normally
Ben Potter Yes you will need to solder everything back in place as it was before you removed the parts.
Hello, No wouldn't need your Apple ID information.
hi may i ask where you get the soldering iron from
www.okinternational.com/metcal/english/globalnavigation/products/hand-soldering-systems
Why tempture did you use for the but at the beginning
I do not remember the settings I used when making this video but I use 135c now when opening an Ipod Touch 5th or 6th Gen. If you have any further questions please let me know.
and call the flat welding you apply ?
hey, my iPod wasn't charging anymore and so I ordered a charging dock and instead of heating it where the battery connected too and where the charging dock connected too I just pulled it off but when I put the new battery and charging dock on it turned on and I put the charger in and it wasn't charging do you think it's a charging dock that isn't working or what it have been where I pulled the things off
Hello, It sounds like you may have pulled up the solder pads and did you resolder the dock connector flex cable or battery when installing the new components?
Out Source Repairs yes, at first it Turned on and for a few seconds I was able to see the screen and I plugged in the charger as soon as it turned on but it wouldn't show that it was charging maybe its the charging port on the dock connector?
Yes it could be the flex cable. Can you provide me with a picture of both solder jobs you did and do you have a multimeter?
Out Source Repairs yeah how do I send you the pictures?
Upload the pictures to postimage.io/ and provide me the link.
followed all the steps in the video but no horn and audio jack
on this unit, i cannot get to seem the home button to touch the inside dome button, any ideas
Did you install a new dock connector flex cable or is it an old home button?
Just wanna know if Apple is able to do all of this for you or they will ask you to buy a new one.
I asked them to fix it. They said apple don't sell parts for repair. They can only replace it. It'll be 150$.
+Edgar Rodriguez 150$ for a 16Go? Or anyone you had?
For a 32g iPod 5th gen
The apple I went to is in StoneBriar mall in Frisco Texas
Hey bro can you replace my iPod touch 5 back for a red one?
Hey I need help my ipod 5th generation won't turn on at all like the home and lock buttuon trick doesn't work and my home button doesn't work. I do not know what happened i just left it under my pillow I came out of the shower and it didn't turn on at all any thing you know that could had made this issue??
Fernando Suarez No I do not know what could have caused this issue with your device. The device would need to be diagnosed.
Can I replace the home button cable??
The home button cable usually comes attached to the replacement port and headphone jack.
You would need to replace the entire dock connector flex cable not just the home button cable.
you can not change only the home buttom flex?
+marcos catrifil What do you mean by home button flex? The home button is attached to the Ipod Touch 5th Gen dock connector flex cable. You can only change the home button dome switch if your home button dome switch is bad. We provide a how to video below:

+ANDRES DE ANDA Yes we have a video coming soon for the Ipad Mini dock connector flex cable.
Do you know how much this costs if a store replaces it for you

postimg.org/image/a8q6nu38h/
what can i do now? should i poke the dots with the soldering machine until it removes? HELP!!
Hello, You will need to run a jumper(Copper wire) from the damaged solder pads to the connection/probe points shown in the second link below to reconnect to the circuit with the new dock connector flex cable. The first link below is of the photo you sent me with areas I highlighted in red that may need to be jumped. The pads outlined in red are the left over connections from the dock connector flex cable you removed.

No it is not the same cable.
or battery?
I just f**ed my iPod 6
xd
what liquid did you put before soldering
Flux
all this for a headphone jack?
What is that noise that sounds like a spraying can?
Victor Turrubiartes That sound is the Soldering Iron at the moment it touches the Sponge (wet) to clean the point so its more effective at the time of soldering.
Samus Aran I want to solder two apple devices but I really can’t cause I don’t have time. Where do you live, maybe you can help me out.
what was the liquid thing
flux I believe

Hey I sent you guys an email several days ago but have yet to receive a response. Not sure if the message on the website went through or not but if you could get back to me it would be appreciated :)
I responded to all messages received. Did you get a response from me? If not send let me know what the question is and I will assist you.
Thx
