- In this video we take up Skip’s airplane for a spin and I ask him some questions about it. I truly believe this plane is so underrated! It flies like a beauty!
If you’re new here my name is Luke Pylypciw and I’m a 15 year old student pilot sharing my journey from student to professional pilot on RUclips. I’ll bring you videos of me flying, friends flying, tips and the latest and greatest aviation has to offer. Thanks for watching!
Luke
I would legitimately never allow that guy in my plane again. I commend the patience of the two guys up front.
Tell the guy in the back seat to talk less on final. I get the feeling he is an instructor and should know this already. I had to remind my instructor a time or two to stfu.
Great plane great piloting. Guy in the back acting as a random noise generator needs to go.
Totally oh man... ruined this.
"...we're not landin till we get three green...yaaa, make sure ya got three green..." Thanks for that clarification buddy - don't know what we would have done without your guidance - and it really helps when you repeat it! So, do we need three green to land or what?
Pity you couldn’t turn the guy in the back Mike off, he ruined the whole thing. Nice aircraft, thank you for sharing.
Couldn't agree more, guy in the backseat has to go.
Dude was the “know it all father in law” who ruins everything.
Great video minus the distraction in the rear seat.
Man no kidding!
Since when did Gilbert Gottfried become a flight instructor and start doing cameos in the back seats of airplanes on youtube videos?
Pure gold 😂😂😂
I was trying to remember his name. Thanks.
I was a demo, ferry and delivery pilot for a Bellanca dealer based out of Peachtree DeKalb back in the early 70s. I flew the various Viking models and, in 1973, bought a Bellanca Turbo Viking. I flew it all across the US and the Caribbean in nearly any weather you can think of. It was a rock-solid IFR platform, fast and fuel efficient with long legs and built like a brick house. At the time there was a Bellanca Viking on the airshow circuit with a guy doing acrobatic manuevers with a stock (except for the smoke generator) Viking. He was followed up by a young lady doing the same routine.
Maintenance was simple (except for the hydraulic gear pump) and very reasonable. I could fly circles around any Bonanza for a fraction of the cost. A great airplane in every element.
Really? How fast did that Bellanca go?
@@gringoloco8576 The turbo (17-31atc) could get 200 ktas in the 17000-FL190 range at about 16gph.
The Lycoming (17-31) was around 160ktas and the Continental (17-30) was about 155 ktas on about 13-14gph
That guy was Corkey Fornof, BTW
Bobby Bishop also did a airshow routing in the Viking
Have you ever seen the JUST LOOK AT THAT guy on youtube? I think he is in the back seat. I would have pulled the circuit breaker feeding his intercom.
My two kids know enough to keep quiet when I'm flying in the vicinity of an airport.
This flight could have benefited from sterile cockpit. It is not as common in GA but airliners practice it every flight. It helps prevent unnecessary excess chatter in the cockpit. Also, the guy in back should know that the cockpit is not a good classroom. Skip was providing good guidance but the guy in back had no place talking as much as he did. Two captains in a cockpit is a dangerous cockpit.
My instructors some 25 years ago, hammered me on using proper terminology as per the FAR-AIM. Shame this guy hasn't studied that section.
Remember working on one in the early 90’s. The owner had hydraulic leaks under the floor. A real PITA to fix . I also did a bunch of dope work on the wings. The owner felt sorry for me so he brought me up for a ride. Its a lively airplane to fly. 300hp if memory serves me correctly. It gets up and goes!! Yes, the guy in the backseat is a PITA too!!
the Kid talks smooth on the coms. Natural.
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Mandatory old Bellanca saying: "If God had intended man to fly airplanes with metal wings, He would have created metal trees".
Sorry about that, I'm weak and couldn't resist it. I'll show myself out.
What came first, beer cans or trees?
Great video. The guy in the back, extremely annoying.
The guy is the back has zero self awareness, and is absolutely full of himself. I'm sure that he's not a jerk, but he could sure do with not behaving like one.
Bet he leaves him home next time out... what an arrogant Ahole!
Yes, the backseat 'driver' makes this otherwise really good video seem unenjoyable. He needs to be quiet unless someone talks to him.
The guy in the back yapping makes this unwatchable. Drop him off and do more videos.
SO annoying
agree!!
Three green, make sure we've got three green, we don't have three green. ugh
We have a 17-30. Very economical for the ground speed. Solid as a rock in any conditions
I think the instructor insisted on the "back-seater" to see how the student could fly under pressure. He did a great job!
It’s nice to see that the actor who played “bubble boy” on Seinfeld got himself a backseat ride in this great-looking airplane…..
Aloha I Gus’s I’m not the only one. The guy in the back should Learn to shut up and enjoy the ride
Awesome plane. Super chill and calm pilot. Next time isolate the video so we don't have to listen to the guy in back.
You’re right VERY underrated !
Great video Luke. Love that plane. I’ve always consider it the 1966 Corvette of the air. The dancer on the glareshield is a nice touch Skip. Seems like I remember some fuzzy dice there not that long ago. All three of you guys are proof that aviation begins at the local flight school. Well done.
Custom Aircraft Builders & Goodrich Aviation Absolutely, glad you enjoyed!
A friend of a friend took me for a ride in his BSV about 10-12 years ago. It was a very memorable experience because it just flew so smoothly......especially after hopping out of a super decathlon straight into the Viking. I absolutely loved that airplane! You have a beautiful aircraft, and the video was great as well!
Thanks so much! It is an under appreciated plane for sure. Glad you enjoyed.
When it comes to wing spars, you can’t beat Sitka Spruce!
Yip the guy in the back seat needs to keep his lips shut. PIC knows his plane and need to be questioned
Back seat flyer? "Hey, turn left here. I gotta pick up a Slurpee."
Last Oct we bought a ‘73 BSV, after flying almost all GA aircrafts out there the Super Viking is an AMAZING performer, love everything about it! Thanks for the great video
Couldn’t agree more, love that plane! Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
@@LukePylypciw I have some videos on my BSV on youtube, look them up under Bellanca Super Viking (Marcos Ruiz), enjoy
Very nice airplane . One of my favorite for sure . It seems to be fairly light for it's size.
I worked for a FBO for a long long time and retired from there. We always tried to get a/c onto a tie down and secure it . I could tell the difference when moving these.Looks from the outside seem to show a lot of room inside .
Nice airplane.Beautiful colors to.We had a blue/white striping painted tail dragger that set for years and was never flown in my 20 years + being out there.I always thought to myself what a shame it was to end up like that .
Great video . Glad to see a Viking so nice airborne.
I think you are onto something special here. Really well done both in production value and content. Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing your channel and pilot career grow. 👍
I appreciate that. Thanks for watching!
I love flying my '74 BSV and only cool pilots deserve such a great plane!!
I had one, most fun plane to fly!
I'm starting to fly in a Super! 1973 model! They're a blast!
Awesome. Have fun!
Yeah, couldn't watch to the end because the guy in the back is just yapping on.
It is definitely the most underrated airplane ever made!!
"20 hours he talks like that Skip" i dig that
Haha thank you I appreciate it!
Every pilot remembers specific milestones. Solo is one of em. Other than the PIC withholding the truth, I liked the video. You’re doing great.
Jamerican Pilot Glad you liked it!
I have no recollection of how many hours I took to solo. Is that what you're referring to wrt to withholding the truth?
@@jeffboatright Same for me.
I had the pleasure of doing some minor repairs on the ailerons.....and got a ride....what a great airplane...the roll axis was tight again like a sportscars rack and pinion. Great vid...thanks. PS love the ceiling fan...lol
Thanks for the comment Barry! It sure flys like a beauty. Glad you enjoyed.
yeah baby, handles like a spitfire
I watched just to confirm if back seat guy was irritating...lol
Great video! But yeah, wish the guy in the back had kept the chatter to a minimum.
Heck ya, Country roads. Last I flew out of there was around 1992, February. We got into a low front flying in and had to go IFR but the next days was cold But blue skies and we had a heck of a tail wind. Made it back to WV in about 2 hr 45 min we were in a Cherokee
Nice! Thanks for watching.
i think my biggest barrier to entry in owning my own plane is my lack of mustache. I'm gonna get right on that!
The "Poor Man's P-51".
great plane, great video, you have a nice ride there safe flights
Thank you Robert, much appreciated!
The ones that know GA aviation knows that this is a great aviation. It is underrated because the ignorant thing airplane having parts made out of wood and fabric is "old" yea, in the culture of "old" is the same as bad, there you go. I am glad it is underrated, this way it's left for the ones that know how to fly a great machine! LOL
When I sold Bellancas back in the 1970s we had a demo of two small sections of a wing on a Bonanza and a Bellanca. Took at 1" metal ball to simulate hail and dropped it from about a foot. Big dent in the Bonanza and bounced off the Bellanca piece without a mark.
Bellanca was built stronger ... another item was a picture of the Kilgore Rangerettes seated on the wings. 8 on each wing. Just an honest, strong aircraft.
Motormouth in the back talking way to much on final. Very distracting to the PF He hasn’t heard of a sterile cockpit ( conversation pertinate to operation of the aircraft ,decent, approach and landing ).
I would think every pilot would remember their first solo and the total hours to solo. I remember mine after 62 years
Yeah. I can't exactly remember my freshman grade point average, either.
Pilot Iso switch is awesome...
Guy in back “Nice Skip”...um, at 9:24, looks like the left-seater was providing some “assistance “. Nice plane! I had forgotten about this make.
I like the guy in the back! He's hilarious!
Great flying you guys!
Thanks!
I flew Vikings in a charter op. They are fast, have a fabulously light ailerons, fun to fly and look great but....are LOUD inside, and being very heavy have a crummy useful load. I mean a really, really crummy useful load. I agree with others about the bla bla bla from the back seat. A distraction.
What an irritating voice that dude in the back seat has...he needs a volume control knob.
Watch Debbie Gary fly one on RUclips, wow! Great airplane
Handcrafted beauty!
It sure is nice!
Otherwise, great video Good approach and landing , even with the chatter. 👏👍
The song sounds like “ the story of my life “
Nice video except for frikkin' Gabby Hayes in the back seat who couldn't shut up. He's probably a nice guy, but on this ride he was annoying.
You need a Robotow my friend!
We’ve since upgraded to a best tug😅
This is my airplane of choice !
We love it Roger!
I agree. The super viking is super underrated. Great airplane.
Thanks for the comment Jeremy!
Geez, the guy in the back is more annoying than Gilbert Godfried.
Very good
Great video, all except the guy in the back
CFI Gottfried in the back needs to stop talking.
how often are the termite inspections?
Answer: Interval is about 50 years longer than corrosion inspections on a Bonanza or any other metal aircraft
What is the STC for the hula girl?
I found a 1980 Super viking for 39k..came with a fresh annual..the wing spars were in great shape...what a barnfind
Had to deliver a viking from San Diego to Bethel Alaska. Great to fly fast but would rather own an A-36 Bonanza.
Great video
Hakeem AL SHAMARTI Thanks!
Great video!
Thanks so much, Jeff!
What is the planes cruising speed?
Cruises right around 165 knots
My flight instructor said that was one of the coolest aircraft he ever flew.
Keep in mind, there is almost no gasoline powered certified aircraft that he hasn't flown.
Lot of cockpit rattle.
I saw the music credits, but what’s the name of this song?
What happens when rot is found in the wings? Leave that guy in the back home next flight. Chatter box, should not talk during the landing .
what is the name of the song around 5:12? I'm looking for it and cannot find it anywhere
I honestly don’t remember. At the time of this video I used a website for my music which I believe is no longer available. Sorry!
@@LukePylypciw darn ok. I looked through almost all the videos in the music link but none matched up. Found a song called Anchor by Oscar Jay with the exact same sounds but had words.
@@LukePylypciw I found it by Accident when searching for a background song.

Had to stop watching.. The 'noise' out of the back seat is a complete distraction!.. Leave him HOME!
need to stop and have the guy in the back get out and check the tail wheel johnson rods---- then slam the door and start over----
Seems very quiet
i would never fly with that guy in the back seat. so distracting
WTF with this chatterbox in the back???
It isn’t a “pilots license”! It’s called a “pilot certificate “
Way to loud of music. Can hardly hear anyone talk over it
Tell the guy in the back to shut up!
If you're over 6'3 forget it lol. Great planes otherwise
OK, Gilbert Gottried in the back seat needs to SHUT UP! Particularly on take off and landing.
The Vike is a great single person plane but unless you weigh in less than 120 pounds each, there's just no comfort room up front for two.
@Biggus Dickus - not really - I'm referring to comfort - i.e. the interior beam of the aircraft at the front seats. Let's put it this way... anyone with a name like biggus dickus probably won't be comfortable in a front seat next to, say, someone named big pussy.
As to cg, that's easy to check via the AOM.
I'll call BS on that. Comment likely made by a guy that weighs 220.
Fast and loud.
Couldn’t agree more!
nice video. music not so good, not needed, spoils, the video.
Who’s the backseat pilot giving instruction? Very annoying.
IDK. Wood wings, fabric wings. Ehhhhh. 45 years old.
And superior to aluminum in SO MANY ways.
The issue was that the wood/fabric construction costs were higher due to hand-built labor. That's what killed it.
The steel roll-cage body frame is FAR stronger and more protective than the beer-can product at Beech, Cessna and Piper.
I hate to ask this, but who is the loudmouth in the back seat?? He couldn't keep his mouth shut! Spoiled the whole thing.
Wood wing? Nope
*edit* I really like this plane though, just don't have my experience with wood wings
The wings on the cruisair to Viking series bellancas are generally stronger pound for pound than metal wings. Wood did pretty well on the DeHavilland Mesquite eh? Don’t let them sit out in the elements and they require minimal care and also benefit aerodynamically by not needing rivets which add parasite drag.
hated it don't like to watch pilots fly their plane
Back seat comedian is too much to handle. Clicking out.
I hate electric trim, okay Boomer
Horrible music. Thumbs down right away.
They are junk aircraft to work on trust me
Great video
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
