- A sorry sight for this Class 90 'Skoda' as it reaches the end of the line at SCDL Ltd. The majority of the loco cut-up with the salvage process underway.

Just another illustration of the failure of the previous Government policy which claimed it wanted more freight on rail but does nothing to ensure the level playing field to make it happen, particularly using the most environmentally friendly mode of haulage.

Always sad to see a loco being scrapped.
The loco is about 80% shredded to bits, meanwhile another 2 have already been broken up at EMR Liverpool Docks. A total disgrace that they've not just been languishing at their birthplace for the past 20 years, they've spent more time rotting than they have been working.😡😣
The class 90s are 30 plus years old, this doesn't surprise me, considering how hard they are worked😊
These were left/dumped in the sidings for over 10 years.
Hi I tested every single one of the class 90s and the 91s at Crewe Works. Considering that they are 30yrs old they should still have a life on the rails. They are still running the HST which are nearly 50yrs old. Age does not mean redundancy

Why did they not go to CF Booth at Rotherham with a rail connection, instead of a landlocked yard, with the road transport costs that would involve?
At least there are some preserved examples at crewe. Have the 91s in storage, have they been scrapped. Thank you.
Hi Tom, the class 92’s which were stored in the Doncaster area have all now been scrapped also. They went to Sims in Newport last year.

So sad.... I remember as a kid going on a school trip to BREL looking at these being built. They were my favourite Electric loco and the first class I collected all of the numbers! With this renaissance of rebuilding locos (57s 69s, re-enginned 66s), I dont understand why they couldnt have done the same... put more powerful motors and modern control systems in. It wouldnt have been that difficult surely?

Is it just me, that's a very strange operation.... mini digger, very large scrap handler all hired in I would say ?? I'd love to see the bidding process to take on this work ??? Thats not a scrapyard ?
The class 90 is old, look at the new class 99, soon to come (Eurodual 6000 for UK) !!
Sad to see this, stll relatively young if compared to class 50s still in use. They still have a life span.

The actual cost of electricity used to power these loco's, less cost to use Diesel Locos

Sad sight granted but as some of the Class 90's had been stored outside out of traffic for almost 10 years the electrical and mechanical condition of them probably wouldn't have been all that good 😮 but as they had almost 30 years service from introduction in 1988/90 when they were built at Crewe Works perhaps some of the less rusted away and damaged examples could hopefully find a new operator and run again on the mainline

Why can’t they use them?
Uneconomic to return to traffic and the cost of traction power has led to DB ceasing use of the class completely.
Because db left them to rot rather than let anyone else make use of them and now they're too expensive to try and repair to mainline specs
Simple fact the electricity is too expensive for freight trains.

These are absolutely rotten, one of them is even missing part of the roof. There are others elsewhere in much better condition that are also stored surplus.
Perhaps you should send this video to Ed Milliband, the new Sec if State of Transport, and the Minister for Rail.
It borders on industrial & environmental vandalism.
How? Cutting up locomotives that don't work is far better than leaving them to decay and potentially pollute the environment. I've seen that happen, it's an eyesore and a hazard, not to mention it takes up space that could be better used

Go electric GO electric the goverment said/says yet they scrap loco's that some have spent more time in store than running ,not quite a scandal but does beggar belief ,if this scrappy has any sense they will store certain items to sell to the companies that will keep some running
