The more moving part of Nixon's speech is the end when, in a moment of self-realisation, he talks about never becoming bitter and letting the bitterness overwhelm you.

It is the most frustrating thing about these casts
you're on the brink of driving tanks into Moscow and then inexplicably you're suddenly on board the Titanic !!

Love the podcasts. Some minor errors and mischaracterizations in this one, but basically got the story right. Thank you.John from Olympia Washington.

I was in grade school in the early seventies. I would get off the school bus & race to my grandmother's house & watch the hearings on television with her.
I remember feeling the shame, that young. I had done nx wrong, but I felt it coming thru the screen. People were quiet, almost chastened in public places. There is no shame today.
One of you mentioned how the rule of law is now used as a weapon to punish the 'other side' .
That one sentence says best just how far the compass of humanity has shifted.

I was also a child in the Seventies when this was happening. Looking back at old street interviews at the time, people were genuinely outraged at Nixon - a politician who had not long before won EVERY STATE apart from DC and Mass. A very popular President. And things have changed so much. Four years ago I watched a bunch of thugs invade the Capitol in Washington. One of the worst moments in American history. And the President of the time had urged them to go there! The Vice-President of the United States was in the Capitol at the time performing his duty under the US Constitution. When the President was told that the mob were chanting that they wanted to HANG the VP, and that he was having to hide in a garage, the President - that is the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, replied "So what?". What kind of a man is this? And where is the outrage? Where is the shame? Where are the consequences? What has happened to humanity? How did he get elected in the first place? i can't understand it.

Add Capricorn One and Invasion of The Body Snatchers to the list of early 70s films of that atmosphere

I really like Capricorn One. Unfortunately I think it got into the bloodstream of a lot of people and ended up as an adjunct to Flat Earthism.

my thought about Nixon taping his own conversations and later not destroying them is, he is probably concerned about his legacy. He thinks those conversations may someday be worshipped.

The TDS is real in these two. Their takes on Nixon were quite tempered, and very fair, and I enjoyed the podcast while the topic remained on the Watergate crisis itself.

TDS is media induced cognitive dissonance, it seems to me.

Recognizing Trumps actions around the election as bad/dangerous/potentially illegal is not TDS.
TDS is used in a dismissive way.
I haven’t heard a clear argument that explains how all of Trumps actions are perfectly good and normal, validating your use of TDS.
People could watch hours of evidence against Trump including his own words, voice on recording, etc and wave it all away with nothing more than “TDS”.

If Tom's daughters were 18 year old interns under Clinton he might feel less nonchalant about that impeachment - strange that he overlooks the role of Christianity in outrage of Republican grassroots.

Matthew 25: 31-40. “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”.
Please point out examples of outcry from the Christian Republican grassroots, at the comments at the recent Presidential rally at Madison Square Gardens. I have looked around but I can't find anything. I was brought up as a Christian by good people. but I can'r see people like them anywhere any more. Is it Christianity any more?
